The span gap between Rum & Coke's last studio album,
Perks Of Fame and
Better In Tongues is the longest wait between records in their entire career. The origins of the album date all the way back to the development of their second record,
Epiphany. After claiming to have written and recorded hundreds of songs for their second attempt after the critically panned debut
Venom & Versace, it was said that almost 30 songs were close to making the final track list.
"Obviously we couldn't release all 30 songs, so even though they were all pretty great, we had to stick to one important theme and cut half of the track list." Coke said in a radio interview. Only 13 song made the standard version of
Epiphany and the rest were said to be re-recorded and improved upon for Rum & Coke's 3rd album. However, Rum & Coke began work on a mix tape instead, which quickly became an album instead of the earliest version of
Better In Tongues that was ready to be shipped. In 2014,
Perks Of Fame was released overnight. The duo immediately went back to creating what was originally supposed to be their third album. The first single from their fourth album,
Sentenced4Life, was released in June 2014. After the duo couldn't think of a single to follow-up the smash hit, they postponed the album and went back to the studio. Rum's partner at the time, Mariko Kobayashi, cheated on Rum during a live broadcasting of
Celebrity Big Brother. Rumors swirled that since there was a possibility that the album was full of love songs for her now ex, Rum did everything in her power to stop the album release and demand for there to be revision. After quickly writing and recording a new song
Fragile, it was announced as a single and a snippet of it was posted on Soundcloud in August 2014. From the clip, it seemed to be a song about dating someone only because you felt bad for them. It was scrapped soon after after Rum reportedly,
"didn't feel comfortable about the track anymore." It is confirmed that the song was scrapped from the album completely. In November of 2014, a second single was finally released.
Hotels became a multiplatinum record and is Rum & Coke's most successful single to date, despite being criticized heavily for it's murderous theme over something as small as being cheated on. From there the album was planned to be released on December 21st, 2014. The record was pushed back at the last minute because according to Coke,
"We listened to the album again and it doesn't feel complete. We wont release and incomplete album." The album was rescheduled for a Valentine's Day release in 2015, only days after a huge Superbowl performance. The date was also scrapped and no other release dates have been announced since.
"There was just still so much to tweak." Coke says about the delay of the album. "We already know that we have our core songs, but we wanted to make sure that we also had our cherry on top. We've worked too hard and long on this album for there to be fillers. We wee in the studio re-writing re-arranging and adding new tracks so that the songs only go from good, to great to 'woah, when did Rum & Coke get this good??'" In October of 2015, the 3rd single,
Keep It Clean, was released. "We like doing the unexpected. Nobody expected it to be some song about the forced sexuality of women in the business. We wanted the rest of the album to be just like that.
[Better In Tongues] had started as an album purely about love, but that's nothing like us. I don't even believe in love
[laughs], Coke still can't believe that she fell in love, we just don't make albums about love." Rum laughs while explaining the intent of the record, confirming it to be the first album they've released that isn't completely restricted by a concept. "I think that was the hardest part. When you have a concept, you can actually get to that point where you feel like you've said all you could and therefore, the album feels complete. Having an album with no concept and everything in the world to say.. it became a sort of never ending process."
Despite the
"never ending" process, the album is expected in February of 2016. Though there is still no direct date, it is rumored that it will be released on the 14th of February, also widely known as Valentine's Day, due to the official lead single
$5 Words, being released only weeks before.
