Single: LEARN ft. Yasmine Kiambang Artist: Lotus Label: Songs To Live And Die By Release Date: August 7th, 2016 Genre: Dancehall, Hip Hop Written by: Sarojini "Lotus" Lui, Yasmin(e) Kiambang Produced by: FancyN Length: 3:39
LEARN is a single by Chinese-American rapper Sarojini "Lotus" Lui, featuring the Malaysian singer-songwriter Yasmine Kiambang. The song was produced produced by Nina "Rum" Tarantino, under the producing name, FancyN and was written by the 2 artists. It was released August 7th, 2016 and was made available to download digitally globally on the same day and the track is planned to premiere on US radio on Monday, serving as the lead single to Lotus' sophomore album, titled MUDPIE. Musically, LEARN is a Dancehall song with Hip Hop production, it's instrumentation being based around a percolating beat, sinuous synth lines, and stretched vocal samples. Many critics refer to the tone of the production as lazy, which matches the repetitive hook well but draws a lot more focus to the actual words of the song. The lyrics only strengthen the song, Lotus and Yasmine Kiambang, who are both infamous for going on a lengthy hiatus and disappearing from the public eye, take the time to write out all the emotions and doubts that they had to face once they finally returned. A song that seems a little overdue for Lotus and feels like it should've appeared on her debut album, What We Learn, Lotus explains why it makes the perfect lead single for her follow up, saying, "My first era was all over the damn place. I released a lot of singles but most of them didn't make the album, I was making and losing a lot of friends at a crazy rate, the whole thing was just a hot ass mess but throughout all of it, I learned a lot about myself and the people around me. Hindsight is a tried and true method, and since this album is all about redemption, I'm taking everything wrong about my last album rollout and profiting off of it, using it to create something ever better. I feel like Yasmine can definitely relate to that, she knows exactly how it all feels so while she cooks up her own comeback I believe she's doing the same thing. This was just the perfect comeback for both of us."
The song was hinted at and teased way back in February when Lotus uploaded a snippet of the song to her website along with a video. Undernetah the video there was a message which said, "a song for everyone who's been abandoned/a song for everyone who's doubted themselves/a song for everyone who just needs to LEARN/we're getting back to work/and we not playing no games this time around". First, first, first, first, first, first Do you hear my word, word, word, word, word, words? Been running from my work, work, work, work, work, work And now my sole[soul] hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurts I just hope to learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn From all my mistake-stake-stake-stake-stake-stakes
Whatever it takes I’m just trying to find my place The world only shows the darkest frames The highways seemed to be engulfed in flames Don’t know if my heart can keep up with the pace But I just can’t give up on the waves I’ve spent all of this time in Malaysia Hiding from what could’ve been my wake up They don’t know how it feels to be your own critic Been telling myself I’m not good enough, far as I see it, you’re all yes men It only hurts that all I have to do is try to be at my best, And then I’m begging to stop thinking like “can I live?” Yet in my head is where I live Can’t live up to myself and into doubts, I give Ohh, ohh, oh-oh Thought too long Into The Night and now I’m running for The Hills
I never seem to learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn Do I hear my own word, word, word, word, words? Been running from my work, work, work, work, work, work And now my sole[soul] hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurts Learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn From all my mistake-stake-stake-stake-stake-stakes Whatever it take, take, take, take, take, takes
It started as food for thought, now I’m stuck doing the dishes Funny how none of y’all missed me when I went missing First album out and we already got the second mixing Just a mud pie in the making It’s been me and the fam, no relation Thought you was down with the Lang’, how mistaken Fake, fake, fake, fake, faking If you really cared, you would know it was more than a vacation I swear I'm still tripping off fear and trepidation Mad ’cause I didn’t pick up the phone, we never even had a line of communication All along, you were nothing but a nervous prostration Wasn’t quick enough to cut your ass off, now I'm getting a higher education I swear y’all never learn, learn, learn, learn, learn Loyalty never hurt, hurt, hurts nobody You ain’t gotta like what I say cause I got me I’m a fucking dime, yall are just a carbon copy What We Learn taught us nobody can top me Not even my own doubts can stop, stop, stop me
I just need to learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn Do I hear my own word, word, word, word, words? Been running from my work, work, work, work, work, work And now my sole[soul] hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurts Learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn From all my mistake-stake-stake-stake-stake-stakes Whatever it take, take, take, take, take, take, take take, take, take, take, take, take, takes
I deserve better from myself, I deserve better from the whole world I deserve the whole damn world, I’m more than just a scaredy little girl I teach peace but still have to pray for love Hoping to find acceptance for myself in guidance from above Put my hijab on and let my hair down Showing my true colors, who needs to show skin when you feel this proud? The power isn’t within my sexuality, it’s somewhere deep within my mind And if I just keep my skull open, I think I’d be just fine
I just need to learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn Do I hear my own word, word, word, word, words? Been running from my work, work, work, work, work, work Wonderin’ why my sole[soul] hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurts I just gotta learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn From all my mistake-stake-stake-stake-stake-stakes Might’ve messed up at first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first, first.. But hindsight is the best way to learn, learn
