Venus Fly Trap is a single by Chinese-American rapper Sarojini "Lotus" Lui. The song was produced by Nina "Rum" Tarantino, under the producing name, FancyN and was written all by Sarojini "Lotus" Lui. It was released July 25th, 2017 and was made available to download digitally globally on the same day. The track is planned to premiere on urban radio, serving as the lead single to Lotus' sophomore album, titled MUDPIE after choosing to scrap her last single, LEARN.
The song comes after almost a year of silence from Lotus. The rapper took yet another hiatus after her last single, LEARN, her always busy life keeping her from being active on the music scene, as well as facing writer's block. She explained it all through the Souncloud release of "Blank Page" back in May, promising her fans new music as well as assurance of her safety.
Musically, Venus Fly Trap is an Alternative Hip Hop song with delicately experimental production. It has instrumentation that starts off as based around pulsating keys, beautiful violin strings and even a shy xylophone. It quickly travels into darker territory, a hard hitting beat dressed with rhythmic clapping, soulful vocals, speinkled with a digital "pew pew" to comically mimic a gun. The theme is no laughing matter though, Lotus declaring war on the man that sexually assaulted a woman she cares about deeply. With the vengeful lyrics, Lotus creates a twisted feminist anthem, taking one of the worst things that can happen to a woman and turning it into a quest for strength.
