Such a shame, he was a great player and person. :/ |

Gary Speed, not only a fantastic player/manager but a gentleman. A credit to the game. Many memories of him playing in our famous Blue shirt of Everton, not least his hat-trick against Southampton or his equaliser against Liverpool at the Kop. RIP. Edited by user 28 November 2011 07:16:05(UTC)

I'm usually totally non-plussed about celebrity deaths, i take the attitude of "must be awful for their family and friends but will all the people who never met the person just calm down and shut up" but the news of Speed's death really shook me. If someone so outwardly succesful, happy and relaxed can be suffering so much inside to kill himself then it truly can happen to anyone.
An absolute legend, an inspiration, a professional, a role-model to every sportsman.

why did Speed hang himself? I'm not much of a soccer/football watcher. I like the American soccer league, but that probably doesn't mean shit. So, I don't really know much about Gary Speed. I read that he is like one of the greatest players and a relatively new young coach. |

So, I don't really know much about Gary Speed. I read that he is like one of the greatest players and a relatively new young coach. That is the mystery regarding this tragedy. Speed had a very successful footballing career, he had turned Wales into a competitive nation, playing the best football ive seen from them in years... yet this occurs. You can never understand someone's motives to take their own live. Around 12 hours before he was found dead, he was on a television program 'Football Focus' where he was giving his thoughts on the upcoming fixtures. According to the presenters, he was smiling and happy, just being the 'normal' Gary Speed. Yet fast forward 12 hours and his body is found in his garage. Its a sad thing. Rumor is rife that The Sun and/or Daily Mirror (newspapers) where going to launch allegations about his private life in their upcoming issues. Both denied. It would be terrible to think that was the reason behind it all. Either way, all PL teams will hold a minutes applause next weekend to celebrate his life. |

Not exactly famous but the Tamworth Football Club (Which was my local team when I was living there, they're in the Conference Premier League) president, Len Gendle died today. I knew him, so I'm kinda upset about it. :/

Sorry to hear that man. :/
Big tribute planned for Gary Speed tomorrow at Elland Road. I was there today and the number of scarves and wreaths outside at the Billy Bremner statue is incredible. The stadium is almost sold out too, which is a nice tribute to him. I couldn't even get my normal seat. I just hope those Millwall bastards show some respect and refrain from acting like the veritable wankers that they are. |

This is utterly stretching the definition of "famous" well past breaking point.
On the 21st of December the mastermind behind black metal band Woods of Ypres died. So I'd say thanks to David Gold, one of my favourite recording artists of the last decade. 'Pursuit Of The Sun & Allure Of The Earth' easily slots in to my top 25 records of the 2000s. |
