It's not so much that he was allowed to be a racist because he was old, it's that he's from a generation of people who grew up in a world were the social norms were markedly different. Not to excuse the things he said, I just don't think you can condemn the man for saying them.
Like, if you were born in America in the 1800s, you could be forgiven for believing black slaves were lesser people, because that was the commonly held belief. I mean, that's a shitty thing to believe, but that's what people were taught and believed.
Every great person in history, in any sphere of culture, was probably kind of an asshole. But we more remember the positive achievements of their lives that had a lasting effect, rather than focusing on their flaws. Obviously we don't forget about those flaws, but put it in context. The man said dumb homophobic and sexist things sometimes. Some people were offended. And nobody was hurt. BOY WHAT A CUNT! |

Everybody who isn't a socially liberal & economically socialist is a fucking monster man, you know that.
But no, it is easier to forgive someone around in the 19th century for 19th century views than it is for someone who was born in the 1920s & lived through the whole social revolution of the '60s. I mean you could justify the Nazis by "it was a different time then". No. Moral relativism isn't a road that most people are comfortable going down.
But none of that detracts from the fact that I think Patrick Moore is a culturally important person as far as 2nd half of the 20th century UK goes. |

It's not like the guy was a paedophile, or beat women, or oppressed anyone. All he did was espouse his ill-informed opinions. I mean, I know what you're saying, but being born in the 1923 means when 1963 rolled around he was 40. Do you know that many people in their 40s who are hip to the times and modify their beliefs and worldview to fit with the new ideas of the day? |

Not so much the cultural elements, but the improvements in things that are moral & just? Sure. Aww fuck, Socrates is going to annihilate now for claiming to know what justice is. That guy. Even after downing the Hemlock he still haunts crummy philosophers. |

Being around the age of 40 is the average timeline for a proper mid-life crisis. So I'd say that changes in beliefs and world-view are common for that age. |

Nonsense, a mid-life crisis is a temporary reversion to the pleasures of your youth. It's not a major shift in your personal beliefs. Usually the outcome is a strengthening of your existing beliefs. |

For those of you who follow hip-hop kinda closely. Remember Joey Bada$$'s Survival Tactics? It featured this dude named Capital Steez that rapped on it too. He committed suicide on Christmas Eve for unknown reasons currently but I find it incredibly sad that someone with that much talent would just off himself like that. He was realistically amongst the Top 5 Rap Prospects for the next decade, and just ending it when he was getting props from DOOM and other vets? Just depressing. RIP Steez:

Calm down, dear.
In all seriousness though, sad one. Quite a character. |

The number of people I have seen vocalising their joy is very depressing. So, many people were affected by her policies, it doesn't make wishing someone dead acceptable in my own humble opinion. |

For the record, as a Scotsman born in the 1980s, I was more or less indoctrinated into harbouring a visceral hatred of the woman, but as with everything else Scottish about me, I have suppressed that urge and distanced myself from that notion. Am I sad she's dead? No. Am I happy she's dead? Not really. But I wonder, what's with this defending Margaret Thatcher and laying into Patrick Moore? |

Some frail old woman died, but her policies are still fucking up this country. No solace in her death. Better to focus on fighting those still alive who are trying to destroy the country's less well off. |

Thats a pretty good way to look at it. If its like the USA,we are still suffering from her buddy Reagan. |

Ryan Davis of Giant Bomb. This one is a huge bummer because I've been following Giant Bomb daily for almost 5 years, listening to the Giant Bombcast every week, sort of feeling like he was a part of my life in some weirdly specific way. Giant Bomb is all about family, the extended family, the fans. It's a true community, and Ryan Davis was the jovial ringleader that held the whole thing together. He got married last week, went on his honeymoon, and died after tweeting about his lack of sleep: Quote:@DavidEllis I'm on day three, I've gotten collectively maybe 10-12 hours. It's not like I'm gonna die, but C'MON. VACATION. Death by irony. In the age of twitter, I guess it's the perfect last statement to make to the world. Edited by user 09 July 2013 10:21:59(UTC)
