Sad and Soggee is the second single released from Hip Hop artist Rum's debut album, Try Forgiveness. Written all by herself and produced with the help of longtime producer inZane, the track is a three minute and fifty-one second long "sultry, piano-tipped grooving" nu-disco song that combines hip hop and electronic dance music. It's production features "colorful piano keys, a groovy bass line, handclapped-styled beats and pitched background vocals", and has elements of funk, R&B, and pop. FACT has described the songwriting of 'Sad and Soggee as "a clever blend of pop songwriting with a classic Hip Hop flow". The song begins with an intro sung by Rum in a distorted voice: "When the memories come rushing in/Try forgiveness/Just try". These lines are repeated all throughout the album as a reminder to the listener of the theme of the rapper's debut album where she sums up her rise to fame by explaining how hard she's struggled to forgive people along the way.
The single was sent to radio and made available for individual download separate from the album after the rapper's surprise performance at the Fan Choice Awards with her partner in crime Coke. Their last album together dating all the way back to 2016, Rum & Coke's performance posed as a mini-reunion for fans where 'Sad and Soggee' was performed as a mashup with duo member Coke's current solo single. This was a clear indicator of what Rum's next single would be.
Written and recorded in 2017, the song is inspired by the 2016 #1 smash hit song 'Bad and Boujee' by hip-hop rap group Migos featuring the rapper Lil Uzi Vert. Though the track features melodic singing from Rum in her lower register, in the second verse Rum's rap borrows from the familiar flow of the members of Migos. Taking inspiration from a confident braggadocious song, Rum puts herself on the other end of the spectrum as she takes the time out to put the failures of her love life under a microscope. In the song, she sings and raps about the different flings she's had with fellow stars like Brandon Grey. "Between the fame and the success, my life has been really euphoric. I really feel like the only thing that keeps me grounded is my love life." Rum comments about the track during a RapGenius track-by-track analysis. In 'Sad and Soggee', Rum tells the world that she doesn't mind being humbled by love at the height of her success, declaring heartbreak as a needed reality check in the fast lane.
