MUDPIE

MUDPIE is the second studio album by rapper, Sarojini "Lotus" Lui. The record was released on September 17th, 2022 by Songs To Live and Die By with additional support from Dahlhouse Entertainment. Lotus returns with a fiery sophomore album 8 years after the successful 2015 release of her #1 debut album, What We Learn? Despite spending so much time away from the mic, Lotus sounds as confident as ever and with every boisterous track she reclaims her throne as the queen of underground rap.

The title, MUDPIE is a play on words which refers to the lotus flower's ability to grow in mud. Lotus uses this as a metaphor for her ability to rise out of dark situations in life and come out a winner. Featuring an album full of flower metaphors like the murderous alternative track, "Venus Fly Trap" and the more vulnerable piano Rap ballad, "Pretty Flower", Lotus opens up to her audience like never before, proving to all how she's grown past what critics described as a "one-dimensional Rap debut".

The album has been in the works since 2016 and contains most of the singles that the rapper has released since then. A lot of the tracks on MUDPIE have been unveiled to fans years prior to its release. First came "LEARN" featuring Yasmine Kiambang which served as the lead single for the album. Fans responded cautiously to the song because of how drastically different it sounded compared to Lotus' classics. Later that month, the rapper reassured her true supporters with the single, "TEACH" which contained the hard-core bars Lotus is known and loved for. Next came the single, "Running on Fumes", a catchy track that featured the R&B underground singer Sahara Blue. When first announcing the album, Lotus visited the iconic radio show Sway In The Morning and recorded the viral live freestyle "MUDZSN" which is now included on the album. Lotus then went on haitus for a year while working on the album and returned in May 2017 with "Blank Page", releasing it unofficially on SoundCloud for her O.G. fans to enjoy for free. That July, Lotus released "Venus Fly Trap" and peaked at #2 with one of her biggest hits in years. The success didn't stop there, a month later the title track "MUDPIE" was also released and peaked at just as high. Just when it seemed like Lotus was back on a roll again finally ready to release a new album, she disappeared from the spotlight and returned 5 years later with the critically acclaimed hit song, "SHIVA". Back like she never left, every single Lotus releases proves her ability to put up consistent numbers and no matter how long she makes them wait, the support from her strong fan base takes her career to new heights.

Lotus experiments with her sound like never before on MUDPIE with the help of the Dahlhouse production team. Executively produced by FancyÑ, who's also known as Rum from Rum & Coke, Lotus' hardhitting bars are paired perfectly with a dark, gritty sound that can only be described as Hip Hop. A more versatile genre than it appears, additional producers on the album also include DrewWB, inZane and they help bring the record to life with their lively melodies and animated instrumentation. In songs like, "Pretty Flower", "I LOVE MEN!" and "LEARN", Lotus takes it a step further and sings in her beautiful tone that fans have been missing since her 2014 EP, "Love Letters". Still, she never strays too far from the mission, proving her rap prowess in tracks like "Iron Man" and "MUDPIE". What also makes this album special is that Lotus' humanitarian work with UNICEF is starting to really have a strong impact on her lyrics. In tracks like "Global Superpower" and "SHIVA", she shows off a more conscious and politically aware side of herself and she speaks on her experiences as a Black Asian for the first time in her music. Her ability to effortlessly share her knowledge about the music industry and warn/lecture her peers also stands out with "Blank Page", "Cash Cow" and "No Real Friends". It's like with every track, the Lotus Flower herself peels back a new layer, revealing true colors that look, feel and sound more beautiful than the last.
