Voodoo Dolls Unleash Hilarious Chaos with Latest Single "Assassin Man"

Move over, James Bond – there's a new assassin in town, and he's far from suave. London-based post-punk/garage duo Voodoo Dolls, comprised of the dynamic Jack Lai and the cooler than cool Haru Shibata, have unleashed their latest single, "Assassin Man," and it's the musical equivalent of a slapstick comedy in ninja costumes.

The song's lyrics are as straightforward as they come, resembling the poetic genius of a middle-school doodle. "Assassin man, Assassin man, Why don't you listen to your old sensei?" screams Haru Shibata, the band's guitarist...and target of the lame assassin. The lyrics portray a protagonist with all the killer instincts of a marshmallow.

But let's be honest, it's this blatant lack of finesse that makes "Assassin Man" a gem. The simplicity of the lyrics, coupled with Voodoo Dolls' raw and unapologetic sound, creates an irreverent song that's impossible to take seriously – and that's precisely the point.

h

Enter the music video, a delightful creation by the emerging Nagoya-based JapAnime studio, Toio. Picture this: Jack and Haru transformed into anime avatars, embroiled in a surreal fight that's equal parts chaos and charm. Toio managed to encapsulate the essence of the song, turning it into a visual feast that unfolds like a manga on steroids.

The video showcases Jack Lai's lame assassin attempts, armed with drumsticks as his weapon of choice. It's a hilarious journey of failure that mirrors the song's absurdity. Meanwhile, Haru Shibata, the guitarist with typical manga-style superpowers, jumps, and shoots laser in the most anime fashion imaginable.

The creative process behind the video was no walk in the park. Crafting a japanese style anime that captures the essence of Voodoo Dolls' irreverence and humor took time. But the wait was undoubtedly worthwhile.

"Assassin Man" may not be your typical spy thriller, but it's an infectious earworm that you'll find yourself humming despite its anti-heroic message. Voodoo Dolls, with their quirky style and raw sound, have delivered a musical and visual experience that's as fun as it is unexpected. So, grab your drumsticks, and join the ranks of the lame assassins with Voodoo Dolls. It's a mission you won't want to miss.

**Exploring the underground Universe of Jugendstil's "Fenklup"**

London-based band Jugendstil has just unleashed their debut album, "Fenklup". Formed by the duo Tim Green and Daniel Hayes, the band's lineup expanded with the addition of French singer Eloïse Desrosiers and Dutch bass player Elke Hoekstra, whose haunting backing vocals add an eerie layer to the band's unmistakable sound.

The album's title, borrowed from a vintage Dutch TV show, sets the tone for an exploration that defies any attempt to define their influences.

"Fenklup" is not merely a collection of tracks; it's a carefully crafted piece that required extensive time in the studio. The undeniable touch of a DIY and handmade process gives the album a unique character that sets it apart in the contemporary music scene.

g

(Daniel Hayes and Elke Hoekstra)

Jugendstil's sound is a blend of hypnotic rhythms, vintage electronic instruments, and Desrosiers' unique monotone vocals delivering lyrics in both English and French. This amalgamation creates a musical entity that looks like nothing else, with influences reaching across Krautrock, 60's French music, and post-rock.

Eloïse Desrosiers takes the helm as the lyricist, drawing inspiration from surrealism, situationism, and avant-garde authors. Her lyrics delve into societal critiques, exploring the urge to revolt against oppressive systems. However, Jugendstil adamantly resists being labeled a political band with protest songs; instead, they see themselves as an art object, a sentiment reinforced by the quality of the album's cover art, meticulously designed for vinyl collectors.

The album kicks off with a five-minute headbanger, "Chambord Pogo", introducing Eloïse's voice after a hypnotic instrumental sequence of nearly four minutes. The standout track, "Antisong 74", serves as the first single, addressing Jugendstil's recurrent theme—the struggle against alienation. "Fragile Human Defenses" follows, exploring how we communicate to conceal imperfections in a world driven by image. Elke Hoekstra's serene harmonies provide a perfect falsetto counterpoint to Desrosiers' deep voice, creating a dynamic interplay.

j

(Tim Green and Eloïse Desrosiers)

"Doo Dah Agitator" emphasizes the interaction between the two vocalists, while "Monastic Static," an instrumental interlude with a hypnotic riff and retro sounds from a vintage mellotron. The title track, "Fenklup," dives into Desrosiers' philosophical inclinations, exploring Cornélius Castoriadis's idea that the possibility of another society is an illusion, driven by our own ambitions.

The exploration of political and philosophical subjects continues with "The Thinkin' and the Doin'" and "Fractal Mind of a Crowd", sung in French and inspired by Gustave LeBon's "Psychology of a Crowd." The album concludes with the two Head Bangers "Mothlight" (borrowing its title to a movie from avant-garde director Stan Brakhage), and "Neon Pink Bike" where the listenner embark on a ride where freedom is just an illusion.

Jugendstil, signed to Head South Records, is not aiming for mainstream charts. Instead, they present themselves as a niche band, adept at mixing genres and possessing a strong musical and vocal identity with a huge load of diverse inspirations.

**Introducing Scream Team: our latest addi(c)tion**

Get ready to have your musical world turned upside down because Head South is proud to announce the latest addition to our eclectic lineup: Scream Team!

Imagine if The Fall and Art Brut had a lovechild. Well, that lovechild would undoubtedly be Scream Team, hailing all the way from the vibrant streets of Brentford. Led by Kevin Lysander (messy hair, accent, awful pullovers), whose lyrics are as direct and sarky as they come, this band doesn't hold back. Their songs are raw, crude, and dripping with that unmistakable wry humor that keeps you coming back for more.

But Kevin isn't alone in this musical adventure. He's joined by the talented Jenny Behynde, Chris Thewlis, Toby Armadillo, and Tom Fumner, each bringing their own unique flair to the table.

So, how did this powerhouse of a band come to be part of the Head South family? Well, it all started with a killer audition in Brighton. We just knew we had to snatch them up before anyone else did...

**Head South Falls for Hana Rahman: Debut Single "Wanna Die in Birmingham" Breaks Boundaries**

Alright, we love all our artists here at Head South, but every now and then, someone comes along who just blows us away with their raw talent and unique perspective. Hana Rahman is one of those artists. When we met her, it was clear she had that rare quality—an ability to rise above her troubles with grace and charm, while crafting music that breaks boundaries. Her debut single, "Wanna Die in Birmingham," is here, and it's everything we hoped for and more.

Born in Birmingham with Indonesian roots, Hana's life has been anything but easy. She experienced a rough childhood and the profound loss of her father as a teenager. Raised by her mother, Hana found strength in music. Starting out as a DJ in Birmingham, she’s now breaking into the wider music scene with a pure low tempo dub / reggae track.

g

"Wanna Die in Birmingham" is inspired by Hana’s struggles to integrate into UK society and her drive for revenge against the hardships she's faced. The track boasts a strong urban identity, layering Indonesian voices with the ambient sounds of city life, all wrapped up in a smooth dub rhythm. Hana’s ability to channel her experiences into such a poignant and powerful piece is nothing short of remarkable.

The lyrics of "Wanna Die in Birmingham" are a raw and honest portrayal of Hana's journey. They speak to the pain of exclusion and racism she faced growing up in Birmingham, a city that never really welcomed her, as a kid.

In "Wanna Die in Birmingham," Hana challenges listeners to confront uncomfortable truths about belonging and identity. Her music is not just a fusion of genres, but a fusion of her life's experiences. This track is just the beginning for Hana Rahman, and we’re thrilled to have her as part of the Head South family.

**Transcript of Head South Music Label's 1st Birthday Commercial**

[Scene 1: A messy, slightly drunk clown wobbles into view, surrounded by kids at a birthday party. He bellows a raucous rendition of “Happy Birthday, Head South!” then swigs from a beer bottle.]

1

g

Clown:"Well, well, well... 1-year-old. Little baby has grown up, right?"

Kids: "Yeaahhh!"

Clown: "Who would’ve imagined that this small label would’ve gone where it is right now?"

Kid: "Not me!"

Clown: "You’re right, Stacy. Me neither!"

[Cut to : The clown aggressively smashing a birthday piñata with a baseball bat, candy spilling everywhere. He wipes his brow and turns to the camera..]

2

Clown: "Hey, you recognized me, right?" [Silence. Crickets, maybe?]"It’s Tony!"[Another awkward silence.]

Clown: "The guys at Head South had this great idea to dress me like a clown to tell you this... Get ready for something special!"

[Scene cuts to Tony the Clown sitting with the kids, stacking empty beer cans.]

3

Clown:"You guys are all invited to Head South’s 1st Birthday Party! For their first anniversary, Head South will organize cool events..."

Little Girl: "Coconut Shy?"

Clown: "Oh, brilliant idea! And maybe we’ll have a tea party with stuffed animals right after. This is Head South, not your Granny’s Garden Party! Get real, kid."

4

Clown:"First, a Q&A session with co-founders Mark Thompson and Cerys Nyland, as well as Scouting Boss Quentin McEwen, and several artists."

Kid: "That is sooo laaame."

Another Kid: "That sucks."

Clown: "Of course it’s lame! What do you expect, Cirque du Soleil? We’ve got the budget of a lemonade stand! Now, zip it and pay attention, you tiny critics..."

[Scene cuts to the clown attempting to juggle empty beer cans and failing spectacularly.]

r

Clown: "That’s not all, babies! More surprises will comein Brighton: A photo exhibition called "Live!"at Head South Café, as well as a Fan Art Exhibition where everyone can send their drawings... like you, halflings!"

[A little boy shows a terrible drawing of Cerys Nyland.]

r

Clown: "Great job, Mikey!" [Fake smile.]

[Scene cuts to the clown playing with a smoke grenade to entertain the kids.]

f

Clown:"Another event called 'Cover This!' where people like you and me will have the chance to cover the song of your choice... And guess what, special guests will be in the jury and will buzz for you... or not!"

Little Girl: "Is it dangerous?"

[The clown watches red smoke billowing from his hand, trying to stay calm.]

Clown: "What does your heart answer to that question, Corinne?" [Threatening]

[Scene cuts to the clown riding a pony, yelling, "My turn now! My turn!"]

g

Clown: "A lot more is to come: Don’t miss Hana Rahman’s DJ set on Brighton Beach, mini-gigs by Cerys Nyland, Mother of Tigers, and a lovely one by Eireann Flannery for disabled kids. And Voodoo Dolls, back in a car park for a live performance, the CD and posters flea market on Sundays... and and... do I still have time?"

Off-Screen Voice: "Noooo!!!!!"

Clown: "Okay, see you in August, babies! And once again... Happy Birthday to you, Head South!!!!"

g

**[A kid tugs at the clown’s sleeve.]**

**Kid:** "Can I watch Paw Patrol?"

**Clown:** "Get out of my way!"

Mother of Tigers Roar to Life: Sheffield Quintet Unveil First Single "Debutante" and Debut Album "The Death of Teenage Dreams"

It’s been a long time coming, but Sheffield’s Mother of Tigers are finally ready to unleash their full power on the world. After months of eager anticipation, the band’s highly awaited first single, "Debutante," has dropped today via Head South Records, alongside their debut album The Death of Teenage Dreams—and trust us, it’s been worth the wait.

Mother of Tigers are kicking things off with their debut single, "Debutante," a glittering anthem that promises to light up the alternative rock scene. A rhythmic, hand-clap opener lures you in, before the track explodes into a euphoric, sophisticated chorus that radiates the glam-rock swagger of Queen and the eccentricity of Kate Bush. Led by the electrifying Michaela Ward-Chambers on vocals, this is a band not afraid to mix theatricality with pure rock power. In true Mother of Tigers style, the music video that accompanies "Debutante" is a playful commentary on societal expectations, with the band caught in the midst of a debutantes' ball, dreaming of rebellion and breaking free.

The single is just a taste of what’s to come. On the same day, Mother of Tigers are dropping their debut double album, "The Death of Teenage Dreams". For loyal fans who’ve watched the band cut their teeth performing covers, this release marks a momentous transformation. Disc 1 of the album features the band's first batch of original tracks.

Disc One
Debutante
Roar
Crown of Thorns
Diamond Tears
The Death of Teenage Dreams
Cloak and Dagger
Ophelia’s Dance
Gold Dust Lovers
Mermaids and Shipwrecks
The Final Curtain Call

But that’s not all. The album is a double—and Disc 2 is a love letter to their musical roots. It’s packed with covers of their favourite tracks, from Queen’s “Save Me” to Blondie’s “Man Overboard” and even the cult classic “I Will Make You a Man” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. These aren’t just carbon copies of the originals; Mother of Tigers breathe new life into each song, blending classic rock with their own fierce energy and extravagance.

Disc Two

I Can Make You a Man
(Tim Curry)

Save me
(Queen)

Barbecutie
(Sparks)

Man Overboard
(Blondie)

The Man With the Child in his Eyes
(Kate Bush)

A Night like this
(The Cure)

Fullwood Babylon
(The Long Blondes)

Carcass
(Siouxsie and the Banshees)

Gloria, in Excelsis Deo
(Patti Smith)

The album title The Death of Teenage Dreams couldn’t be more fitting. It’s the band’s way of saying goodbye to their cover-band days and stepping fully into their own identity as artists. The raw potential and infectious energy that fans first fell in love with are still there—but now, it’s combined with a newfound maturity and creative confidence.

Mother of Tigers are no longer the local secret their fans have been holding close. This album has been a long time coming. Local observers who had the privilege of catching their early performances in Sheffield's underground scene, as a cover band have consistently raved about the band’s contagious onstage energy and undeniable musical talent. Michaela Ward-Chambers, backed by the powerhouse combination of Millie Harkin on bass, Freya Thomas on guitar, Louise Orchard on keys, and Derya Çetin on drums, have been carefully crafting this moment for years.

"Debutante" is a fitting introduction to a band that’s only just getting started. Mother of Tigers are stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight, and with The Death of Teenage Dreams, they’re proving they’ve got the bite to back up their roar. This is a debut that’s set to leave a mark—glam rock is alive and kicking, and Mother of Tigers are ready to lead the charge.

Head South Records Welcomes Brighton’s Little Minx to Their Roster

Brighton's alternative music scene has produced another band to watch, and Head South Records has snatched them up. Meet Little Minx, the experimental trio blending minimalist post-punk, lo-fi, and electronic sounds. Led by Oona Clarke, who has already caught the attention of the indie label’s scouts, the newly formed band has now officially been signed to Head South.

This isn’t a total surprise for label insiders. Lucy Hansen, the band’s razor-sharp guitarist, worked as a receptionist for Head South for several months, all while quietly honing her craft. Now, she’s trading the front desk for the stage, joined by Nieve Rendell on the drum machine, whose relentless beats provide the backbone for Little Minx’s hypnotic sound. Together, the trio has developed a sound that strips music down to its barest elements, turning repetition and rhythm into something both cerebral and infectious.

With a heavy emphasis on basslines and minimalistic drum machine grooves, Little Minx is all about atmosphere and precision. Clarke’s deadpan, spoken-word vocals are delivered with a rhythmic flair, adding a hypnotic layer that pulls listeners into their unconventional soundscapes.

Stay tuned for more news!

Jack Dunn Breaks the Silence with his New Single “Silence So Loud”

Dunn has been relatively quiet since “Lowlife” made an unexpected splash earlier this year, opting to retreat to the studio rather than immediately cash in on his newfound momentum. As he recently explained in an interview, he wanted to avoid the trap of rushing out follow-up material just for the sake of it. “I needed to take a step back and really take my time with things,” Dunn shared, “This new single’s got a heavier subject matter, and I wanted to do it justice.”

"Silence So Loud" does more than justice to its themes. It’s a powerful critique of toxic masculinity and the silent struggles that many young men face, exploring themes of emotional repression and isolation. Right from the opening lines, Dunn cuts straight to the core: “Man, it’s so hard to have an actual conversation / Cause we’re raised on stiff upper lips and maintaining internal contemplation.” It’s a rallying cry for openness, calling out the suffocating silence many men endure while battling their inner demons.

Recorded at Head South Studios in Brighton, Dunn’s new single is out, offering a bracing four minutes and seventeen seconds of alt-rock grit, singer-songwriter sincerity, and no-nonsense commentary on masculinity. It’s the second taste of his forthcoming debut album, slated for a 2025 release, and what a taste it is—gritty, unfiltered, and utterly timely.

“Silence So Loud” isn’t just a song... it’s a conversation starter. Where “Lowlife” felt like a wistful glance back at Dunn’s youth, this single feels like a bracing examination of where he, and his listeners, are now. There’s anger, there’s sorrow, but above all, there’s a palpable desire for change.

Iceland's alternative Phenom Sigrún Drops Enigmatic New Single “Fjallgrímsdóttir”

After snagging the Universal Music Award for Album of the Year with her haunting 2023 record We Were Born in Our Homes and We’ll Die Here, Icelandic artist Sigrún is back with a spellbinding new single. Her latest track, “Fjallgrímsdóttir” (or "The Daughter of the Mountain King"), is both a continuation of her spectral style and a fresh dive into themes of modernity clashing with nature. Sigrún spent the first part of the year on a sold-out European tour that cemented her reputatio in the alternative music scene, and this single doesn’t disappoint.

Fjallgrímsdóttir” is the sixth track from her award-winning album, a composition that’s as stripped-down as it is intense. Leaning on a sparse piano and her otherworldly vocals, Sigrún creates that bone-chilling, almost primal atmosphere she’s known for. This is no radio-friendly pop song; it’s a haunting, minimalist invocation that cuts right to the bone, more like an incantation than anything you’d expect from a single. The piano’s bare, almost glacial notes hang in the air, leaving space for her breathy, ethereal voice.

The lyrics are cryptic and magnetic, following a young woman drawn away from her natural home in the highlands by the allure of city lights and steel towers, a metaphorical siren call. Sigrún’s words are sparse, yet they’re soaked in longing, every syllable dripping with nostalgia. When she sings, “It called my name,” the intensity builds, as if we’re hearing the voice of someone who realizes the beauty and wilderness they’ve lost to urban progress.

Sigrún pushes her voice to high, delicate places, adding a layer of vulnerability that feels as vast as the landscape she’s singing about. The repeating line, “The Mountain, the Mountain, watches me from a distance”, feels like the inner monologue of someone torn between two worlds. Her voice is powerful, reaching up into her falsetto as if she’s on the edge of the mountain itself, calling back to the life she left behind.

Ultimately, “Fjallgrímsdóttir” is Sigrún at her finest, a song that leaves listeners with melancholy. For those seeking something beyond the mainstream, “Fjallgrímsdóttir” is a dark, hypnotic journey into uncharted territories, a chilling reminder of what’s lost when we leave our roots behind and what might be calling us back.

"Fjallgrímsdóttir" is out now on streaming platforms, CD and Vinyl.

Lyrics

I'm coming from
The Mountain
The Mountain
Lured by the city
And brightness
Of distant lights

Now the Mountain
The Mountain
Watches me
From a distance
Isolated
And Hopeless

From the Highlands, I was
Where the eagles dared to play
High above
The Mountain

Seduced by steel and glass
I heard the city
It called my name
I heard the city
It called my name
It called my name

My feet on concrete
Not on moss,
In crowded streets
I feel the loss,
Of ancient peaks
And ancient lore

Sirens of progress,
City of fame,
Deep inside, there's a longing
That grows
For the Mountain
For the Mountain
The Mountain
Since I left you

Riley: Absolutely mesmerised by this release of Sigrún's. Something rather enchanting about it. Slightly haunted sounding but with an ethereal beauty. It takes me to a very vivid world inside my head as I listen. It's wonderfully captivating!

Jugendstil’s New Single "Fractal Mind of a Crowd" Delivers Hypnotic Post-Rock Mastery

London-based post-rock outfit Jugendstil are back, and their new single, "Fractal Mind of a Crowd", is everything fans have come to expect from their intense, cerebral style—plus a few added layers of tension. Inspired by Gustave Le Bon's "Psychology of Crowds", "Fractal Mind*/" isn’t just a track; it's a study in collective mania; the song explores the almost mystical effect of group dynamics and the feeling of losing oneself in collective emotion.

Fronted by French vocalist and keyboardist Éloïse Desrosiers, Jugendstil blends post-rock with elements of krautrock, creating a sound both relentless and oddly hypnotic. "Fractal Mind" opens with a signature motorik beat that drives forward like a machine, with drummer Daniel Hayes’ rhythm feeling both mechanical and strangely organic. Beneath Desrosiers' deadpan vocals.

The lyrics dive into themes of erasing individuality and succumbing to a shared, "collective soul," as Desrosiers puts it in her detached, almost clinical French. The verses shift between French and Dutch, adding a multicultural, eerie depth that pulls listeners deeper into the track's hypnotic spell.

This is Jugendstil at their best, creating a world where post-rock, krautrock, and avant-garde all collide.

Watch Jugendstil's "Fractal Mind of a Crowd", live at Another Late Show.
