In the year 2019, two sisters named Stella and Carrie made the decision to collaborate on a project exclusively between themselves. These sisters had previously been involved with various well-known bands, utilizing stage names during their performances. Their journey in the music industry began in the year 2004, and they ventured into a diverse range of genres, from metal to experimental music. Although their experiences were enjoyable, they encountered instances where the bands they were a part of either disbanded or went on hiatus. As a result, in 2019, they established a project called Pines, which derived its name from their shared surname. The primary motivation behind this project was to acquire creative control, as they had not been able to contribute to the songwriting or musical composition throughout their years of participation in various bands. In May 2019, the sisters joined forces with their close friend, Katie Zombie, who had gained recognition through her involvement with Hollywood Zombie and Suicide Party. This collaboration marked the commencement of their project. Subsequently, when the trio found themselves in a prolonged period of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they utilized this time to develop a substantial amount of material, enough to potentially produce a couple of albums. Prior to the lockdown, they had yet to determine the specific sounds they aimed to achieve, but the period of confinement enabled them to explore genres they had previously disregarded. Today, we have the privilege of sitting down with the two sisters to discuss their past endeavors and their aspirations for the future. As a fervent supporter, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to conduct this interview. I extend my gratitude to both of you for joining us today."
Stella: we are glad to be here Carrie: we are so excited to be interviewed by our #1 fan.
"RZ: The audience is eager to gain a better understanding of the Pine sisters. Would you be kind enough to introduce yourselves?
Stella: I'm Stella Pine, I was also known by the name Stella Zombie of the rock band Hollywood Zombie and the grind core band Suicide Party.
Carrie: I'm Carrie Pine, I was also known as Carrie Zombie also of the rock band Hollywood Zombie and the experimental band On the horizon. I've also done session work for Johnny Guitar.
RZ: Thank you both for that introduction. Your involvement in various bands and genres is impressive. Can you share with us the journey that led you to establish the Pines project?
Stella: Certainly. Throughout our years in the music industry, Carrie and I enjoyed our experiences with different bands, each offering its own unique opportunities. However, we found ourselves longing for greater creative control. In many cases, we were not able to contribute significantly to the songwriting or musical composition. This sparked a desire within us to establish a project where we could fully express ourselves.
Carrie: That's right. We wanted a platform where we could showcase our own artistic vision. In 2019, we decided to embark on this journey together, drawing inspiration from our shared surname. This is how Pines came into existence. It was an opportunity for us to finally have the autonomy we craved in the music-making process.
RZ: It's impressive to see how you both took charge of your creative freedom. How did you bring your close friend, Katie Zombie, into the collaboration?
Stella: Katie and I have known each other for a long time, and we've always admired her talent and dedication as a musician. She had gained recognition through her involvement with Hollywood Zombie and Suicide Party. We believed that her distinctive style and energy would blend seamlessly with ours.
Carrie: Absolutely. We felt that Katie's unique contributions would elevate the Pines project to new heights. So, we approached her with the idea, and fortunately, she was just as enthusiastic about joining forces with us.
RZ: That's fantastic to hear. Now, during the prolonged lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you mentioned that you had the time to develop a significant amount of material. Can you tell us more about that?
Stella: Certainly. The lockdown presented us with an unexpected opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the creative process. Prior to this period, we hadn't defined a specific sound for Pines. However, the time of confinement allowed us to explore diverse genres that we had previously overlooked. We experimented, collaborated, and crafted an abundance of material that has the potential to fill a couple of albums.
S. When it comes to the different sounds of our songs, it was a combination of intentional effort and natural progression. Both Carrie and I started off in rock and metal bands, so that was the genre we were most familiar with. However, we recognized the need to expand our musical horizons and step outside of our comfort zones. To achieve this, I made it a personal goal to explore genres and bands that were completely off my radar. I delved into the discographies of artists like The Hold Steady, Phish, Paramore, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Zappa, and CHVRCHES, among others.
Carrie, on the other hand, already had a fondness for The Hold Steady and Paramore, so she naturally gravitated towards those sounds. It was during this exploration that we discovered new music that resonated with us on a deep level. We wanted to avoid creating the same old music and sought inspiration from the diverse array of artists we had discovered.
S. As for our favorite artists and bands, there are a few that hold a special place in our hearts. For me, Johnny Guitar, Zao, and Guns N' Roses have been my favorites since 1999and 1991 I also find immense admiration for The Hold Steady and Craig Finn, both as a band and for his brilliant solo work. Lastly, Phish and Built to Spill have been surprising additions to my favorites list, as I used to dismiss jam bands but appreciate the joy they bring to their music.
Carrie, on the other hand, has recently been immersed in a Zappa binge and finds great pleasure in the sound of Johnny Guitar. Some of her other favorites include The Hold Steady, Paramore (with a special mention to Hayley for her captivating stage presence), My Chemical Romance, The New Pornographers, and CHVRCHES.
RZ: Moving on to a more personal note, could you tell us a bit more about yourselves? What are your hobbies, interests, and how do you find relaxation outside of your musical pursuits?
S. When I'm not engrossed in music, I'm often found indulging in a good book or unleashing my competitive spirit on the Xbox. I have a fondness for cartoons and horror movies, so you might catch me enjoying those as well. I must confess that a good whiskey helps me unwind and find solace from the pressures of the world.
C. On the other hand, I find solace in traveling to different places, with Seattle being my absolute favorite city. I also share a love for reading, although I tend to favor manga. One of my guilty pleasures is collecting perfumes, and my collection currently boasts a staggering 200 bottles. Similar to Stella, I too have an affinity for whiskey, savoring its taste and indulging in its relaxing properties.
RZ: Could you please share some details about your friendships with Katie Zombie and Johnny Guitar?
S: Katie Zombie and I have been friends even before our time in Hollywood. She was previously married to Bobby, but their relationship ended due to his infidelity. She has been a part of every band we've started, and she is someone you can rely on completely. Soon, she will also be joining our current band.
C: Katie Zombie is not just a friend; she is our best friend, and we have immense love and admiration for her. Being in her presence brings us immense joy, similar to the excitement one feels when seeing a lifelong partner every morning. As Stella mentioned, Katie will soon become a member of our band, which we are truly excited about.
RZ: And what can you tell us about Johnny Guitar?
S: Johnny Guitar is an extraordinary talent. He possesses a unique blend of brilliance reminiscent of both contemporary artists Dwight Yoakam and Axl Rose. He wholeheartedly devotes himself to his craft and adores his fans. His performances are filled with unwavering energy, always giving 110%.
C: Johnny Guitar is an artist who encapsulates authenticity without any pretense. His lyrics are profoundly beautiful, derived from his own life experiences. Personally, I am in awe of his abilities. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him, as his passion elevates everything he touches. Furthermore, his devotion to his fans is evident through his genuine enthusiasm for signing autographs and engaging with them.
Carrie: The lockdown forced us to adapt and embrace the challenges it posed. Instead of succumbing to the limitations, we used the situation to our advantage. We channeled our energy, emotions, and experiences into the creation of music that truly represents who we are as artists.
RZ: That's incredibly inspiring. Now, looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the future of Pines?
Stella: Our main goal is to release our music to the world, to share our creative expressions with as many people as possible. We aspire to connect with our audience on a deep, emotional level, and to inspire them through our music.
Carrie: In addition, we hope to embark on memorable live performances, touring around the world and experiencing the energy and connection that can only be felt in a live music setting. Ultimately, we want to leave a lasting impact on the industry and be remembered for the unique artistry we bring to the table.
RZ: Wonderful aspirations indeed. As we come to the end of this interview, is there anything else you would like to share with our audience?
Stella: We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our supporters, fans, and those who believe in us. Your unwavering support fuels our passion and drives us to push boundaries. We truly appreciate every single person who listens to our music, attends our shows, and cheers us on.
Carrie: Absolutely. We couldn't have come this far without the encouragement and love from all of you. We promise to continue creating music that resonates and connects with you on a deeper level. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
RZ: Thank you both, Stella and Carrie, for taking the time to share your journey and aspirations with us today. We wish you nothing but success and fulfillment in all your future endeavors.
Stella: Thank you for having us. It's been a pleasure.
Carrie: Yes, thank you so much for this opportunity. We appreciate it immenselyEdited by user 04 January 2024 14:36:42(UTC)
