“Battled The Demons” is the brand new single by the now 35 year-old singer-songwriter and actor Adam Black whom just recently celebrated his birthday. The single marks his second release since returning to the industry earlier this year with “Vampire In The Night” which gave Adam his first ever chart topping single. “Battle The Demons” is also the second single to be lifted from his long awaited second studio album. “Mr. Misunderstood” which is set for release towards the end of the year. “Battle Of The Demons” was originally scheduled for release on August 3rd to mark his 35th birthday however he decided against it instead now releasing it a few days later. “Battled The Demons”, was written by the singer himself and was produced by Stephan Lipson whom was one of the masterminds behind his previous single along with Trevor Horn and for the first time in his career Adam also has a production credit to his name with this single.
Lyrically the song talks about the 35 year-olds somewhat colorful past and how his battled against the hardships in his life and come out the over side a better man, however lyrically he also talks about how the media still portrays him as this aggressive evil person when in reality his now much more tame and timid which is also pointed out within the lyrically content of the song. Once again the single has no major label backing and has a total run time of three minutes and forty-one seconds.
Critical response to the track has been somewhat mixed to positive with many praising his vocal capabilities. Emily Arnold of DigitalSpy wrote in her review of the track. “Oh man this is way more rock than I was expecting give his last single, but I will say this does a very good job of having that agsty hard hitting sound and man gosh who knew Adam could sing and rock out like this, overall it’s a pretty solid track”. She then proceeded to give the song a score of 7/10. James Elkman of Idolitor wrote in his review. “First single had that catchy sea chanty style this one has almost a full blown rock vibe, gotta say I am kinda digging it…what I want to know is why has this man not been a constant fixture in the industry I’d rather hear him on the radio over his little brother Elyar, like no offence to Elyar but Adam’s vocals are just far far superior and its about time the industry got to hear them, this will go over well with his fans however it will also bring in new fans, especially fans of the indie and rock style.” Frazer Jenkins wrote in his review. “Okay…okay I might be in the minority here but what on earth was Adam thinking since when was her a rock artist, I mean sure his last single had a sprinkle of it but this is like a full blown indie rock anthem I am a little confused and worried that his album is going to end up being a clusterfuck of different genres but who knows maybe I’ll be surprised, cannot fault the production or the vocals mind you as both are top notch.” Xavier Coleman wrote in his review. “Production on this is god level, vocals are surprisingly mind blowing but this doesn’t scream Adam Black to me, for those that remember his debut album was very much a soul and jazz inspired record…this…this is like polar opposite of that..but then again his is older and maybe this was the style he wanted to go with all along after all this is an independent release so his got nobody controlling his sound this time around, I mean I like it but it might be a bit to different for his die hard fans out there”.
Adam Black wrote:Firstly I want to say a massive thank you for the love and support that has been shown for “Vampire In The Night” honestly when I heard it was #1 I was blown away, but here we are second single and we have “Battled The Demons”. This one definitely was not an easy one to right but it needed to be written and said because I am not the same guy I was a decade ago I have matured, grown and become a better person and now it’s time for the public and the media to see that, so let me be the first to introduce you to “Battled The Demons”.
BATTLED THE DEMONSNobody calls me Mr. Nice guy, always Mr. On the aggressive side
I never claimed to be saint, we all make lives mistakes
I just think I am misunderstood, forgive me father for I have sinned
The devils in the detail that once ruled my head
I know that words just won’t cut it, but my rebirth has just began
I have made many mistakes, some of them haunt me to this day
Misfortune seems to be my game
Fell into that depressive state of mind, just that simple aggressive guy
numb to the world for what I had become, considered ending it all
Especially after what I had done, feelings blurred into one
I picked a fight with the devil and come out alive
Battled the demons of my mind, survived and thrived
I don’t wanna fight anymore, I don’t wanna be see as that guy know more
Battles the demons and came out alive, now it is time fly
Nobody calls me the nice guy, it’s oh that’s Adam Black the spiteful guy
For the years of media scrutiny and public shame
I fought through the pain of what I became
So let me be the first to say sorry Dustyn for making your life hell
To Den and little Britney whom I abandoned when they needed me most
To Mariko for laying my hands upon you that was wrong
See this is why I am misunderstood, drugs and alcohol
They played with my head, turned evil made me feel dead
So from now on don’t think of me that way
Know more Mr. Aggressive guy, just that misunderstood guy
It’s been a rough ride, but I survived
Life hasn’t been easy, but we made it
Forgive me, I battled the demons and won
Cocaine and alcohol are no longer a vice of mine
Battled the demons and came out alive
Battle yes I battled the demons and won
I am Mr.Misunderstood time to show the world
Just who I am really am
Battle the demons, they almost stopped me breathing
Battle yes battled the demons and came out alive
Battle the demons, cleansed my sins
Battle, yes I battled the demons in my brain
Fell into that depressive state of mind, just that simple aggressive guy
numb to the world for what I had become, considered ending it all
Especially after what I had done, feelings blurred into one
I picked a fight with the devil and come out alive
Battled the demons of my mind, survived and thrived
I don’t wanna fight anymore, I don’t wanna be see as that guy know more
Battles the demons and came out alive, now it is time fly
