Genre(s): Country-Pop, Pop, Yacht Rock
Length: 3:49
Writers: E.G Summers, Christopher Hudson
Producer: Rose Meadows
Label: Studio 60 Records
From The Album: Mantra

INFORMATION

Silly Little Thing Called Love is a song by American singer-songwriter Ellie-Grace Summers. The song serves as the seventh track on Summers' long-awaited third studio album, "Mantra", as well as being lifted as the fourth official single from the record. The track was written by Ellie-Grace Summers and award-winning songwriter Christopher Hudson, whom Summers scheduled multiple writing sessions with throughout the creation of "Mantra". Production was handled by Rose Meadows, who also produced the previous track in the album's running order. Although rooted in country music, "Silly Little Thing Called Love" contains elements of pop, synthpop, disco and yacht rock, creating a wide mainstream crossover appeal with its catchy production and melodic structure. Many reviewers compared it to country-disco hits of the 1970's. "Silly Little Thing Called Love" also references, although uncredited, "Breathe" by Faith Hill - Summers' self-proclaimed "favorite ever song".

Lyrically, "Silly Little Thing Called Love" sees Ellie entering a brand new relationship, officially leaving the upset and the sequential fallout of the previous one that kickstarted the "Mantra" journey in the past. Written with "rose tinted glasses" on, "Silly Little Thing Called Love" captures the excitement and endless possibilities of a brand new relationship. With many "firsts" still to come their way for the new couple, Ellie expresses her eagerness and anticipation over experiencing these milestones together. Throughout the song, Summers states how it is the "small things" that she appreciates most and that she is the type of lover who actively takes an interest, remembering all the little details about her partner. From the foods he dislikes, to the date of his mother's birthday, Summers makes a vow to mentally bank that information forever. Although not an official sample, "Silly Little Thing Called Love" also references Summers' favorite song, Faith Hill's 1999 country crossover hit, "Breathe" through the line; "Caught up in the slow and steady rush". She also nods to the artist herself, singing; "Maybe one day, I'll convert you to some Faith".

COMMENTARY

Ellie-Grace Summers wrote:
"For me, "Silly Little Thing Called Love" is one of the most special songs I've ever created. I'm not just talking about on this new album, but overall. It holds such personal sentiment in terms of both the song's ethos as well as references throughout it that are so close to my heart. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen is my mom's favorite song. I've even caught my dad listening to it and getting all teary when he's had a few drinks. It's a song soaked in nostalgia and love within my household and I wanted to nod to it. Of course, an official sample was always out of the question. How could you EVER touch Queen like that? I just wanted to extend a little gesture to my folks who have taught me a whole lot about love. They've been together for over 40 years now. True childhood sweethearts. I think that's where I get my hopeless romantic trait from; my parents as well as all the love songs I listened to as a kid. I also reference another song on here, my favorite of all-time, "Breathe" by Faith Hill. Again, it's something I was way too intimidated to properly sample but I still wanted to acknowledge it. That song holds such a special place in my heart and is a pivotal cornerstone in my feelings towards both love and music."

"This song is pretty much who I am as a person, as a lover, wrapped up in three and a bit minutes. Talking about the themes and stories for the album, I remember saying to Christopher in the studio that I "just love love". He said to me that that is something I should write about. No conflict, no obstacle, just who I fundamentally am as a partner. I'm someone who loves all the minor details. I could not care less about grand gestures. If I tell you months ago that I hate raw tomato and then you make me a sandwich without it because you've remembered my dislikes from a fleeting comment in a conversation that took place ages ago, that's the type of stuff that makes me well up. That's what pulls at my heartstrings. It's not the grandiosity of love, nor is it the societal pressures. It's the true care and interest for someone inside and out. From wanting to protect them, to seeing them succeed, to watching their favorite movie with them, to remembering that they can't stand cilantro. It's those little things."

CRITICAL RECEPTION

Upon release, "Silly Little Thing Called Love" has received almost unanimous praise from fans and critics alike. Estelle Jackson of Forbes commended the track for Summers and Hudson's song-writing, calling the release a "pure, sweet declaration of love with enough charm and humour to steer clear of saccharine territory". Writing for Paper, Jacob Boston lauded the composition and production, highly praising the "straight from the 1970's soundscape" and dubbing it an "instant classic". Billboard featured the song on its weekly must-hears list, branding it as a "beautiful, delicate slow burn that will no doubt reveal itself to be a huge radio staple over time."

Giving the song a highly positive review, Martin Keenan of NME titled the song as Summers' "best single yet!". He awarded the song five out of five stars and went on to write; "One of the rawest, most honest songwriters teaming up with the pen behind some of this century's most perfectly polished hit records, "Silly Little Thing Called Love" was always poised to be something quite magical from the jump." Keenan praised the song's lyrical content, holding it in contrast to other modern day hits, and claimed that "Silly Little Thing Called Love" perfectly summarised Ellie-Grace as an artist and person. He wrote; "Summers' glowing new release is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the darker, "woman scorned" or "perpetually horny" tracks assaulting the airwaves as of late. Unafraid to admit her positivity and hopeless romantic outlooks in a cynical day and age is what makes Ellie and this song stand head and shoulders above many others. It's a perfectly wrapped package of who she is an artist and a human being navigating the oft-cruel world. "Silly Little Thing Called Love" also just so happens to be a crown jewel in her discography as well, sounding more in control, confident and catchier than ever before."

Here we are again, love, my dear old friend
Like something straight out of a work of fiction
I'll get lost in the pages and our contradictions
Can't wait for the nicknames we shall bestow
To discover the quirks and craft our inside jokes
I'm probably pacing five steps ahead of myself
Just know I ride or die when chips are down and cards are dealt

You'll roll your eyes when we pose for a Polaroid
Worried about your hair is what I'm betting
Don't know what's ahead, hand in hand, looking into the void
So let's capture these precious moments in resin

Oh, you might think I do too much
For this silly little thing called love
Caught up in the slow and steady rush
Drop the anchor when the going gets tough
Every chapter and verse, remember your every line
Come closer, be mine, my forever Valentine
No, I don't care if I do too much
Love this silly little thing called love

Here we are again, love, my dear old friend
I'll hold on tightly to your special little details
How you hate cilantro and tear up listening to The Eagles
Maybe one day, I'll convert you to some Faith
Your mom's birthday, yeah, I've already saved the date
No western wind will alter my direction
I'm not breezy about changing my affections

Caught in the rain and cussing the Gods out
Hating every minute, though minutes soon pass
And over time we'll bask in many golden hours
Cherishing each second that trickles through the glass

Oh, you might think I do too much
For this silly little thing called love
Caught up in the slow and steady rush
Drop the anchor when the going gets tough
Every chapter and verse, remember your every line
Come closer, be mine, my forever Valentine
No, I don't care if I do too much
Love this silly little thing called love

I might come on a little bit strong
But I want to shine while our lights are on
Not materialistic, I care more about the gestures
Love a happy ending but I enjoy the journey getting there
And I'm sorry if you think that I do too much
But I got a feeling this is more than just a crush

Oh, you might think I do too much
For this silly little thing called love
Caught up in the slow and steady rush
Drop the anchor when the going gets tough
Every chapter and verse, remember your every line
Come closer, be mine, my forever Valentine
No, I don't care if I do too much
Love this silly little thing called love

Caught in the rain, cussing the Gods out
Laughing it off as soon as we dry down
I hold on tight to those silly little things
Strike a pose, here comes my camera
Immortalising our haircut disasters
I hold on tight to those silly little things

Caught in the rain, cussing the Gods out
Laughing it off as soon as we dry down
I hold on tight to those silly little things
Strike a pose, here comes my camera
Immortalising our haircut disasters
I hold on tight to those silly little things

Mmmm, those silly little things
