Oh man. This is so wrong. U2 were never daring even by the low standards of innovation set by the mainstream, never mind good.
As far as 80s music goes, I listen to lots. I have no idea where I'd place it in the scheme of things though, I mean I listen to music from the 50s less than any other decade, then probably the 70s next, but 60s, 80s, 90s & 00s, I'm struggling to pick between them. Certainly an awful lot of tripe released in the 80s, pop music was largely utterly godawful (but has been that way since the end of the 60s really, certainly since disco came on the scene), but as a metal fan the 80s were a pretty seminal decade, thrash metal, death metal & black metal all really kicked off back then, there's some utter doom classics, so yeah, I'd not slate the 80s.
And outside metal I love The Smiths, quite like Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Swans, Jesus & Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, bugger knows who else I'm forgetting. Plenty good shit.
