Song meaning

Frontwoman Ashley Perry talked to Alternative Press about the meaning of the song in question.

"In my eyes, this song is a huge turning point for the band. The truth of it is, growing up is not easy. We’re seven different people who have to work towards the same goal on a daily basis. There were a lot of times when I felt really alone or angry or insecure. I don’t always feel good at confronting people, especially people that I love, like these guys. Sometimes it takes songs to get the point across. The song is from one person’s perspective. It’s unfair that Ryan and I are the only ones who gets to talk about it but it helped me a lot. Most of the song is about how I felt I was losing people, and I think the band did too. But it’s okay, we’re growing up. We all love that song and the outro is just mind-blowing, I think when all six of us sang those last lines; 'Broken down on memory lane Alone together, we're alone' it just summed up everything we've felt when we started receiving all this success."

Reviews

Alternative Press magazine gave the song a positive review, saying ""Disloyal," breaks new ground for PANIC!, the performance shows an increased level of confidence and with a more alt-rock sound rather than pop-punk" and ending with "older PANIC! fans will be happy to hear some of the melodic breakdowns from early-PANIC! days come to life once more.".

Music video

The music video was filmed on August 16th, 2009. It was released to the public Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 at 7:00 AM on AMTV, as well as all MTV platforms, networks, and websites. The full video leaked at midnight on the same date.

The video has 2 revolving storyline's at once, one shows clips of a relationship with lovers (which some fans have said the characters look a lot like Ashley Perry and Ryan Ross Hernandez) and a small gathering of some friends and family. The friends and family are having a good time taking pictures, talking, and listening to music. The two lovers seem to be very much in love with each other, but something seems to haunt them. While the lovers clips are showed in between them the band is seen in a dark room with just 2 light bulbs each shining on Ashley Perry and Ryan Ross Hernandez as the band performs behind them. The video shows Hernandez' and Perry being singled out and ignored by the other members of the band. The cramped and bare setting emphasises the inescapable, rising tensions between the band members. The video cuts between the band performing in a cramped little room, a larger performance area where Perry and Hernandez are in rooms next to each other both feeling haunted by the other band members and each other. The video ends with the other members of the band being able to wrap the light bulb wire around Perry, possibly showing how the spotlight is only on her and never on the other band members. The final scene shows Hernandez with a baseball bat breaking the light bulb, now a spotlight isn't shining on any of them as the song ends.

Lyrics

[Intro (Ryan Ross Hernandez):]

I'm coming apart at the seams
Pitching myself for leads in other people's (whispered: wet) dreams now
Doc, Doc, Doc
Doc, there's a hole where my heart was
God, there's a hole where my heart was
Fallen out of bed,
Butterfly bandages, but don't worry
I'll never remember, my head is far too casual.

(piano fades away)
(full band join)

Ashley Perry:
They lived in a fairy tale
Somewhere too far for me to find them
Forgotten their smiles and faces
Of the world turning it's back on me
It's all about the exposure the lens he called out
If the angles were all wrong now, then
I'd rather be ripping wings off of butterflies

Ryan Ross Hernandez:
(*clears throat*)
All I asked for was attention
I need it now
And I want it now
Too much distance
To measure it out,
Out loud
Tracing patterns, and creating plans
Across a personal map
And making pictures where our lives had changed
(Everything has changed)

[Chorus:] (Ryan Ross Hernandez)
The kids you use to love have gotten old
The home wrecker has gained the heart of gold
I have you locked up in the trunk of my mind
Keep, k-keep singing me to sleep
Keep this casually obsessed thoughts alive
Our music keeps believers hearts beat, beat, beat, beating
The home wrecker has won the heart of gold
I have you locked up in the trunk of my mind now-ow, ow-ow, ow-ow
Ba da ba da ba

Ashley Perry:
So one day he found me crying
Coiled up on the dirty ground
My prince finally came to save me
And the rest you can imagine
But it was a dirty, twisted, trick!
As the clock struck twelve
Well make sure to rebuild your heart, broken piece by shattered piece
or the slutty girls will come and use your troubled heart and thoughts

Ryan Ross Hernandez:
I'll call you over
Tell you how because of you I got so far
I'll never be making a single sound again
I’m not used to it but I can learn
Like you told me there's
"Nothing to it"
All I said was.....
"I've never been happier!"

[Crowd vocals:]
"We've never been happier!"

Ashley Perry:
I love you, but I have to tell you
Boy I love you, but I have to tell you.....
That you built up a world of magic, a world of unhappy hives
Because your real life was tragic

Ryan Ross Hernandez (Ashley Perry):
If it's a lie
(You can't see it with your eyes)
You can't feel it with your heart
(And I won't believe you)
Cause if it's real
(You can see it with your hazel eyes)
Even in the light of sadness and despair
(And that's where we all want to be, yeah)

[Chorus:] (Ashley Perry)
The kids you use to love have gotten old
The home wrecker has gained the heart of gold
I have you locked up in the trunk of my mind
Keep, k-keep singing me to sleep
Keep this casually obsessed thoughts alive
Our music keeps believers hearts beat, beat, beat, beating
The home wrecker has won the heart of gold
I have you locked up in the trunk of my mind now-ow, ow-ow, ow-ow
Ba da ba da ba

(Sing it!)

Ba da ba da ba

(Screamed:) (Nick Asher)
We live by faith, not by sight!

[Crowd vocals:]
Broken down on memory lane
Alone together, we're all alone (Woah)
We're broken down on memory lane
Alone together, we're alone

Ba da ba da ba...
