Welcome to the Wasteland. During a break from recording Tim Dunn, who is one half of Axiom, spoke about the EP.
What does the title mean in terms of the EP?Tim Dunn: It is a storyline thing. This section of the album has our hero become a member of a small group tasked to enter the Anderson Military Base and hunt down and eliminate the Meta inside while also searching for any clues or information on the Genetic Advancement Project. We had thought about calling it Soldier originally, but the guys in the group aren't all soldiers (our hero is not) so we felt Hunter was a truer representation of the storyline.
Musically what does this EP doTD: Well the biggest thing we did was experiment with low fidelity 4-track recorders. The whole EP isn't a lo-fi affair but throughout the songs there are sections that do utilize the lo-fi equipment. We were wondering exactly how to convey the wasteland as being a barren and destitute local and found out that utilizing lo-fi recordings really helps the atmosphere of the EP. Specifically on each track, Section 14 is a pretty straightforward Smashing Pumpkins rip. We wanted to record a cover but then decided to just make a sort of tribute to that alt-rock style. It features heavy riffs and strained nasally vocals. Section 15 is hard to explain. I guess you could call it orchestral metal. The main themes were written by Mike and then we both wrote different variations on them. It is in a syncopated 6/8 time, it's really a complex composition that needs to be heard to really understand the subtleties. Section 16 is an acoustic alt-rock song. It features some light string arrangements but it really is influenced by early 1990's alt-rock. It isn't the most musically experimental or complex but just a lot of fun to play and listen to.
The EP has been released with two covers, a limited edition run of 150,000 copies and a general run.
