Laura elaborates on the concept of "real-life Mary Sues" - Laura Firecracker wrote:You know her. Her musical talent is amazing, she's a writer/lyricist, an artist, a dancer, a model, and you could wax lyrical about her looks, about her "arse length ebony locks, raven like her name", about her "flawless pale skin, pristine but for the works of art tattooed on her and the scars remaining from her 'near-misses'". She's 6'5" and could drink you under the table. Her eyes are two different (and bright) colours. She knows all the best rock stars, she's married to one of them, the first winner of two Birdies in the same night dedicated to his looks. She's in Moronic Changeling and has various side projects going with her two closest (male) friends - were it not for Jakey, Chris and Rayne would be fighting for Raven's affections. Oh yes, and her name is the rather Suesque Raven Comatose - and when it's not, she goes by the overly masculine (for a woman at least) name of Regan Wolfe Robbins. Her past is tragically interesting, and almost every major problem she has can be traced back to Nathan's death. More minor problems, of which there are few - Mary Sue goes all out - can be traced to Jaymz breaking up with her, or rather, not breaking up with her (who would split with Mary Sue?). Said Jaymz gave her a "black cross of love", which she used to wear as a token of love saying that she'd wait for him, until she took off the necklace for good in such an epic way, by burying the cross next to Nathan's grave, and then married Jakey after dating him for only two days. She's escaped death so many times that I'm surprised that she's not considered the new Jesus. Last but by no means least - whenever Raven's out of the spotlight for more than five minutes, she steals it again with her latest sin or virtue. And we don't even know why.
You couldn't make this up, but if you did, and it appeared in a book or fanfiction, it would be called Mary Sue, and would become a running joke - a character with even half of Raven Comatose's characteristics wouldn't even be allowed in RPG forums. I don't see why the concept of Mary Sue and Gary Stu, "too good to be true" people who may happen to have angst-ridden pasts, can't be applied to real life. OK, so a real person can't be a clone of oneself, but can still be an object of desire or wish fulfilment (eg. men want her and women want to be her).
But we must thank her for one thing - if you write stories, Mary Sue Comatose can be your model for what not to write. Edited by user 04 December 2009 08:22:12(UTC)
