Okeey, so seeing as I'm getting an Ipod for Christmas at last and I can say goodbye to the old Sony MP3 player, I downloaded Itunes. But I was reduced to a tearful wreck when I discovered I couldn't put my Oasis albums (among others) on my Itunes because they're protected WMA files or something like that. So I was wondering is there a way to 'unprotect' them? Even if it's illegal, I need my Oasis... :'(

;) Technically yes, but it's tricky. Where did you get your Oasis from. If you ripped it yourself, then you can always just rip it again, without DRM, in a format the iPod can play (it doesn't do WMA). If you downloaded it from a store, then you're almost certanly going to have a headache of a time getting back your files. In which case, let this be a lesson to you: DRM is bad. Try: http://undrm.info/remove-DRM-protection/FairUse4WM-freeware-DRM-removal-Windows-software-Strip-copy-protection-from-WMV-ASF-WMA-Windows-Media-Player.htm or just keep googling for wma drm removal. Or else, just download them illegally in mp3, on the basis that you already have them. The other thing of course is that iTunes will transcode your WMAs to MP3 or AAC, which is pretty bad. So basically I'm suggesting if you're going the iPod route, you should somehow replace all your WMAs with MP3s. |

I'm a recent (in August) convert to the iPod, my Zen having all but given up the ghost at that point in time, with a battery life of about 2 hours. So my advice to you is essentially the same as Pauls. Time to decide on a different file format for your ripped CDs in the future because the iPod won't load WMAs, but will convert them to MP3 or AAC, and both of those will result in a reduced sound quality. I quite like the MP3 myself, part of the appeal being the universality of it. It works on pretty much any portable music player you can shake a stick at. Rip things as a high quality VBR MP3 and the quality should be more than good enough for listening to on the go on a normal pair of headphones (unless you've got high end ones then going overboard with file quality is a bit of a waste of disc space really).
So yeah in this case I would suggest borrowing the CDs from your dads mate and ripping them again. What app do you use for ripping music? |
