Q: You’ve recently been signed by Junction Records!, they’re considered a more rock oriented label, why sign with Junction Records!? Well, I supported The Junction at their New York gigs in 2009 and I got along really well with Max Armstrong and they showed the most interest in me and also with Junction Records! I get the freedom to create the kind of music I want, whereas If I had of signed with a major label there would be more likely to be pressure on me to create a more commercial sound.
Q: Your friendship with Max Armstrong was a factor in Junction Records! Signing you, do you think people will think that it’s just because of your friendship and not your music? No , I think once my debut album’s released it will hopefully prove that I was signed based on my vocal and song writing abilities. I think it would be naïve and disrespectful for people to say I was signed because of my friendship with Max.
Q: You’ve said your interested in collaborating with some other musicians on your debut album is there anyone in particular who you’d like to work with? Well because I’m new and still sort of unknown I wouldn’t expect the biggest stars in music to want to work with me just yet, but I do have a wish list of who I would love to work with in the future, and hopefully they would be interested in working with me at some point.
Q: So who’s on this wish list? Well I’d rather not say at this moment but myself and Max are in the process of talking to some people about collaborations. I think the number one person who everyone wants to work with is Stephanie Fierce because she’s in my view the best musician around and her consistency is second to none. But I really wouldn’t expect her to even know who I am but maybe at some point in the future that could be a possibility. There’s quite a few other people who I’d love to work with but we’ll leave that for another day.
Q: Ok, Your beginning work on your debut as soon as possible what can you tell us about your album? Well I’ve been writing songs for a few years and I have about 24 songs to choose from and develop for the album, The album title is This Is Who I Am and hopefully it will be released around May - June this year. I’m going into the record studio in New York tomorrow to record some rough versions of about five songs just to help me develop the songs a little bit more and hopefully I can work with a few songwriters on some of the tracks but each song will be written by me and the songwriters will work with me to develop the songs.
Q: Is song writing a difficult process for you? Not really I’ve been writing songs since I was about 15 so I’m fairly used to it, But that moment when you finish writing a song and your perform it for the first time that’s why I got in the music industry and whether it’s successful or not doesn’t matter to me it’s more about how you feel when you perform it.
Q: You’ve spoken about your admiration of Stephanie Fierce, would you compare you music to hers in terms of sound? I think we have a similar sound but I have to say there’s no way I could compare myself to her she’s way ahead of me In terms of ability, hopefully someday I could have the same sort of success as Stephanie, I don’t want to be seen as a rival to her or a clone of her because she’s one of a kind, I don’t think there’ll be anyone who has as much success in music as she has had.
Q: What other musicians or genre’s do you listen to? All different type’s of music really from Pop, Rock, R&B, Blues, Dance and so much more. In terms of musicians I tend to listen to more Pop/R&B music at the moment I’m really into music by Ryan Ross Hernandez, TishaJackson!!!! and Miss Vanity.
Q: How would you describe you lifestyle? Well it’s a lot more normal than when I was 16 and living in California, I was a bit of a wild teenager I did what most people in California do like hang out on the beach, drink, party I did take drugs once and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. But my lifestyle now is completely different, I live in an apartment in New York and if I’m not working on my music I’m either at a coffee house or in my apartment relaxing.
Q: You like to keep your relationships private but are you having difficulty doing that? Yeah, I don’t really like to talk about my personal life I don’t mind talking about what I do when I’m with friends but I don’t like talking about my relationships because that’s personal, I’ve never been comfortable talking about my relationships even with friends and family, so you’ll be getting nothing out of me.
Q: We won’t probe you any further on that? Thanks.
Q: You’ll be touring in support of your debut album, what can we expect from your tour? Well the main focus is going to be on the music so mainly it will just be me and my piano. I like to move around on stage so I won’t be at the piano for the whole performances, In the future I’ll think about other things in the tour like theatrics but It’ll never be as out there as Miss Vanity’s performances.
Q: Is she someone you’re a fan of? Yeah definitely she’s amazing, she’s a little crazy but she’s probably the most creative performer ever. I’ve seen her twice in performances and I was never bored for one second during her performances, let’s face it she knows how to put on a show.
Thanks for your time and good luck on the album and tour. |
