That's because most of what you like isn't successful/modern. I assume anyway, I can't really imagine you being into Tinie Tempah or Roll Deep.

Dizzee Rascal is successful. Girls Aloud are successful. I mean define success. Mos Def can surely be regarded as commercially successful? Massive Attack? Outkast? System of a Down?

I remember when I was alot younger and it mattered to me how a band would do, I remember listening to the top 40 on Radio 1 each Sunday and labouring under the illusion that they MEANT something. But granted, I was somewhere between 10 & 12 at the time.
