It's been a while since your last album, how does it feel to be back to releasing music? WILD. I've missed putting out music for the fans, I think they were starting to hate me because of how long I kept them waiting!
Before you started recording this album, you stated you were looking to be inspired before you even thought about a new record. What helped you to become inspired? I just think life in general, I mean, this album isn't a dark or depressing album, of course it has its moments, but I think it's quite fun on the most part. I've definitely just been having fun for the past few months, travelling around and living, so that's really just helped to inspire me. Seeing new places and having a good time, that always gets the creative juices flowing. It's probably why I've got a stripper anthem on the record! I have no apologies for it.
Your new single "Red Wine" just dropped, and it's nothing short of crazy, which is expected. What is it all about? It's really all about taking it back to my roots and giving the fans a song that they can finally identify with. I think after the last record, they were scared I was turning into an artist that they didn't recognise. I made pop music with a dark twist and angry lyrics, then I turned into some alternative girl with emotional lyrics and noise pop Sleigh Bells kinda songs, it was a big shake up. It was a moment in my career where I was experimenting, and I feel like "Red Wine" is the perfect blend of old and new.
Drinking blood though? Isn't that a little harsh on the poor guy? Never! (laughs) There's no such thing as too harsh in this world. Songs like that actually make me laugh, I consider it a fun song.
Why did you decide to title your new album Riot Grrrl and what can we expect from it? Riot grrrl can mean a lot to different people, it's a genre of music, it's a movement, it's a freedom of expression, it's a statement, and I really love that. It's all about being bold and fearless, and that's exactly what my album is about, so I thought it was an appropriate title. I'm not going all Pussy Riot and Courtney Love on everyone, but they've definitely inspired me to take risks with my music. There's a little something for everyone on there, pop, rap, more alternative stuff, so I'm just really excited for people to hear the full thing.
Coming back to what you said about this record being more fun compared to the last, does this reflect where you are at in your life right now? I would say so, definitely. Anyone who has lost someone close to them knows that you don't really ever get over it, you just find the best way of dealing with it and learn to cope and understand it. There's a song on the album called "Doll Heart" which features the wonderful Pixie, and it's all about how I'd feel so empty with the company of other men, how they'd never make me feel the way Eric did. I'd feel like I was betraying him in some way, almost cheating, it was the strangest feeling. It was as if I wanted to pin the blame on him for leaving me and making me feel so lonely and confused about love in general, but he's not around for me to do that, and of course it isn't his fault. It's just me trying to find an excuse for the way I feel. But of course, I'm blabbing on and getting all deep and shit now. (laughs) But yes, I've learnt to move on from those feelings and realise that I want change, and I'm ready to move on.
I'm glad to hear that, because I imagine it was extremely hard for you at first. Right? Of course, you kind of get into this routine where you see the same face every single day and then it gets taken away from you, you never get to see that face in the flesh ever again. It's heartbreaking, and at first, I absolutely hated him for making me fall so in love with him. (laughs) The emotions came in different stages, I just had to get past each one and it took a while. I've definitely got some strong emotions, so when I'm happy, I'm fucking ecstatic, and when I'm sad, I'm really rock bottom... when I'm angry? I'm an absolute psycho.
So could you still see yourself getting married one day and having children? Children?! Me? With a child? I think the world would end, that'd be a sight to see. I don't know, I don't think I'm quite ready to be a mother yet. I quite like the idea of marriage though, so I can see that happening with the right person, but of course not any time soon! I've always said, if your other half wouldn't let you marry in a black wedding dress, maybe red, he's not the one.
Who are you listening to right now? Pixie, OF COURSE. I think she's the best thing around right now, so I was thrilled to get her on my record. She's gorgeous in real life too, it's quite fitting she's on a song called "Doll Heart" because she's like a real life doll! I'm listening to my own album a lot too actually, which is quite funny. It makes me laugh when people say they'd never listen to their own music, like, why the hell not? You're an artist and you're making the music that you want to hear, so why not listen to it? No one can make music better to your own taste than yourself.
Any celebrity crushes? I could be here all day, there's some very attractive people around right now! I don't just mean the guys too, I have plenty of girl crushes, but that's for another time. Isaac Lovelock is very handsome though.
Your eyebrows seem to get a fair amount of attention, wouldn't you agree? God, yes! I love it, purely because they're one of my favourite things about my whole body. I used to do all sorts to them when I was a teen, now I'm like, fuck it, I actually like them thicker. I think I can rock it well, they're a big feature to my face now. If you looked at Madonna and Elizabeth Taylor and all kinds of popular women back in the eighties, it was the best way to wear your eyebrows, it was considered beautiful. I think the whole drawn on look is very tacky, so yeah.
With so many musicians experimenting with acting these days, do you think you could see yourself doing more of that? I don't know, I think it'd have to be the right kind of script for me. Like, it was easy having my own short film, because I got to be in control and write everything. It's not so easy when you're playing a role in someone else's creation, you can't just agree to do it and then attempt to change the lines you don't like or whatever, it doesn't work that way.
Ending on a light note of course, who would you kill in the world if you had a single bullet? Oh, that's a little mean! Okay, all the people that didn't buy my new single, perhaps it can blow someone's brains out then bounce off the wall and kill someone else. Repeat that a few billion times, because we all know no one buys music any more... and there you have it, I've wiped out all the culprits. Amazing! |
