Background

After Greg Oldson was involved in a near-fatal car crash, Infinite went on an unofficial hiatus for several months. Another single from their second album, 'The Infinity Delusion', was released during this period of inactivity, but wasn't anywhere near as successful as the chart-topping 'Problems with Pluto' had been. Burnt out on their loss of momentum, the constant bickering between Eric Quillington and Greg Oldson almost led to the band's disbanding. The former's newfound creative partnership with Jason Smith (the producer of both 'Midnight Skies and Insomnia'), seemed to lead to the possibility that Infinite was nearing it's end.

Soon, however, Infinite quietly began working it's third album. In an odd parallel to the circumstances that gave birth to 'Blue Nebula', Quillington initially got his two bandmates together to begin work on an EP titled 'Inferno', which would be a musical representation of Dante's travels through the circles of hell. Soon, however, the abundance of material, and shift in lyrical themes, began forming the skeleton to a new album. To complete the metamorphosis from 'Inferno' to 'Insomnia', Quillington found a poem he had written during the record sessions for 'Midnight Skies'. The first line of the poem ('Welcome, one and all, to a town called Insomnia), gave the band a title to the album as well as an over-arching theme to work towards.

After three months of recording, 'Insomnia' is now ready for release. As of now, half of the album has been released through this website. Insomnia will have a physical release next month.

Album Artwork

Infinite's previous release, 'Midnight Skies', was a very dreamy and almost peaceful album. With vibrant and colorful music, a cover fitting those specifications seemed necessary. The resulting picture (a purple-shaded drawing of two moons) was widely acclaimed, and went on to win the @Chaos Award for best artwork. A follow-up picture to the famous cover would've been difficult if it had been in the same style.

The cover for 'Insomnia' is something entirely new. The black-and-white portrait of an usual house perfectly captures the mood of the album; eclectric, with an almost menacing undertone.

A Town Called Insomnia
(4:02)

Song Description

Originally recorded for Infinite's second album, 'A Town Called Insomnia' is interesting in the fact that it technically isn't even a song. Heavily inspired by the circus, and The Beatles song 'Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite', Eric Quillington sought to create a recreation of a carnival. With background instrumental noises provided by Quillington, Greg Oldson, and Jason Smith (the producer of 'Insomnia'), Quillington's vision is realized. A noteworthy fact of this song is the quiet and subdued voices of the members in the audience of the 'circus'; they consist of the four members of Mind, and of Quillington's family. As his mother had passed away long before the creation of this song, her recording consists of a small snippet of a home video-recording. Although the Lithe family was initially uncertain about it's inclusion, they were eventually convinced that it would be a wonderful tribute.

Quillington steps away from singing in this song, and instead steps into the spoken role of a Circus Ringmaster. Oddly enough, the lyrics are quite different from a ringmaster's usual job of introducing the show; they consist of a charismatic salesman talking to his audience about a town that grants eternal youth. Entrance to the paradise, called Insomnia, costs nothing more than 'a shiny penny'. Throughout the eccentric song, there are various indications that the ringmaster is simply manipulating the audience; lines such as 'Insomnia places your face towards the sun' and 'all deals are final' give the revealed town a sinister undertone.

The lyrics of this song, and the idea of a town by the name of Insomnia granting eternal youth, were considered too out-of-place for Midnight Skies (the album it was initially recorded for). However, Infinite realized the potential of the song, and eventually agreed that their next album would be based around the themes prevalent in this song. A re-recording of the song was deemed necessary, to fit with the atmosphere of the album 'Insomnia' as a whole. As a result, there is a sense of uncertainty in the air; The whispered voices have a tone of quiet dread, even though their mumbled words are impossible to make out.

After the ringmaster's final words are spoken, guitar feedback and white noise can be heard getting progressively louder. The volume of the voices also steadily increases, giving a sense that their fear of doom is being justified. This continues for several seconds, before all noises are abruptly cut. An eerie piano is the only remanding sound as the song slowly fades out into silence.

Lyrics

"Welcome, one and all, to a town called Insomnia
Step on up and you will see your dreams realized
Pay nothing more than a shiny penny
And your life with be filled with endless days and nights
For living in Insomnia grants eternal youth

All the skeptics in the audience need merely to ask themselves;
“Is simple human cynicism worth losing the gift of a lifetime?”
I am but a simple salesman, yet my words speak loud and true
Mostly the former, but you won’t notice after I give these gifts to you
For living in Insomnia places your face towards the sun

Wave goodbye, one and all, to your possessions of this world
In its place will be a world unspeakable in its beauty
Basking in eternal light will serve as proof that you made the right choice
Although this world is priceless, all deals are final
For living in Insomnia gives me all my hopes and desires"

Loopholes
(3:07)

Song Description

The band have described this song as, 'our final rock song before the dive into the unknown territory of Insomnia'. In many ways, this (along with the forthcoming 'Salt'), are the most conventional songs, as it is one of the few songs on the album with verse-chorus-verse structure, while the majority of the songs on this album break away from this style. Loopholes is, in context with 'Insomnia' as a whole, meant to be regarded as the calm before the storm.

A driving bass line opens the song, with a quiet guitar riff as accompaniment. Greg Oldson's background vocals wordlessly sigh, creating a feeling of both sorrow and apprehension. The main vocals, sung by none other than Eric Quillington, register lower than usual. The two voices create an uneasy harmony, and the song drifts by almost peacefully. The quiet mood of the song is somewhat pierced by the lyrics of the song, which describe a man attempting to justify a dystopian culture.

The only semblance of a chorus in this song is the single line, 'We'll wipe them of rights and all free choice as long as they smile'. During this part, Quillington's low singing rises to a desperate cry. The line is repeated several times, and the intensity and repetitiveness gives a feeling of slipping insanity, and seem to suggest that the speaker no longer believes the reasoning behind his motives.

As the unorthodox chorus implies, this song is about a man's growing doubt with his choices in life. More specifically, a dictator's realization that he'll have a legacy as a monster. Quillington explains, "It's always interested me how a man like Hitler or Stalin would react upon learning how society will look on him in the future. I mean, would it cause a fundamental change in character, or would they try to defend their actions? This song is a little bit of both."

Lyrics

"Look closely; there’s nothing here that shouldn’t be

The spring in their step and the smiles on the faces
Get the bright lights to fill empty spaces
Memories cause pain, a flaw in their logic
Just erase the mountains and all things geologic
Oh, isn’t life grand?

We’ll wipe them of rights and all free choice as long as they smile

Being sensitive to feelings allows sight beyond black and white
It’s a feeling of alienation that leaves me uptight
Life will take them places, it gave them events already forgotten
Their time on Earth will be luxurious without spoiling them rotten
Oh, isn’t life grand?

We’ll wipe them of rights and all free choice as long as they smile

They speak about travel plans for events like Christmas Eve
But it doesn’t really matter, because they’ll never leave
Look closely; there's nothing here that shouldn't be"

Failing Expectations
(5:56)

Song Description

Soft acoustic strumming opens the song, playing the chords of the previous song 'Loopholes'. This serves as a bridge between the two songs; Eric Quillington has explained that Infinite 'doesn't want the album to sound disjointed or like a mixtape. Each song is widely different in sound and theme, but we want it all to flow. Sort of like a movie, you know? This is scene three. The credits have gone by, the characters have been introduced. Now we can get to the main event."

The acoustic guitar fades out and is replaced by a glockenspiel, which transitions the melody from 'Loopholes' into 'Failing Expectations'. While the feelings of peace in the previous song seemed both uneasy and artificial, it now comes across naturally. Not so much a feeling of bliss as a feeling of being content with the world. Various noises such as piano accompaniments and the sounds of children laughing drift in and out, creating the sense that a musical world is unfolding before the listener.

All sounds cut away, and are replaced by the acoustic strumming of earlier, this time with the chords to the following verse. Stripped away from the sarcasm and cynicism of the previous two albums, Quillington's voice sounds the most expressive it's ever been. A unique mood for Infinite songs, the feeling of joy, becomes present for these precious few moments. The cryptic lyrics suggest the mindset of a man enjoying his life, and only the final line subtly indicates at what's ahead.

Following this verse, a bassline becomes audible. While the ambient noises from earlier are once again present, the bass brings an added dimension of unease to the song. Amidst the avant garde surroundings, Quillington sings two more line. This time, the words are delivered in a mumble, and are in direct contrast to the emotionally-charged singing from earlier. Almost as if he's holding back from revealing an awful truth, the final line is sung almost as a goodbye. When comparing the descent of the song, it seems as if he's saying goodbye to the childish wonders and innocence of earlier, and is preparing for the hardships ahead.

The song slowly fades out with Quillington's repeated singing of the line, 'I can't communicate my feelings, but everything's alright'. His voice slowly becomes more distorted and lifeless, almost sounding as if it's spoken with a mechanical voice instead of a human one. The sound of children laughing is one again heard in the background, but sounds more sinister and mocking than before.

Lyrics

"The colors and the spectrum collide to make pretty designs inside our eyes
Orbits can give out beneath my feet, yet I’ll still be standing
I’m your guide as we softly fall away from the expected
And when we’re finished drifting upwards, there’s nowhere to go but down

I can’t communicate my feelings, but everything's alright
I’ll simply float away and say goodbye to the night"

Faust
(2:59)

Song Description

An oddity in Infinite's catalog, this song is written and performed almost entirely by Greg Oldson. The musical melody, string arrangements, and singing are all supplied by the drummer, adding evidence to his claim of being the 'underrated member' of Infinite. While this song is much simpler in comparison to some of the Quillington-penned tracks on 'Insomnia', it still showcases a style that is unlike anything else on the album. 'Faust' is a continuation of the themes present on the previous song; while 'Failing Expectations' describe loss of innocence, this song shows elements of temptation and seduction sinking into the mind of the narrator.

The sound of a menacing violin dominates the rhythm of this song, giving the song a classical feel. Oldson and Quillington have said to be very influenced by Bach's 'Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D Minor' while writing 'Faust', and the influence clearly shows. The forbidding tone of the song is matched by his singing; whereas Quillington's voice typically displays an undertone of melancholy and sadness to contrast with the cynical lyrics, Oldson sings with an almost arrogant sneer. This fits perfectly with the lyrics, which describe Mephistopheles corrupting the eponymous title character in Goethe's 'Faust'. While Oldson takes the role of the devil, Quillington's wordless falsetto represents the helplessness and desperation of Faust.

When asked how recording of this song went, Oldson replied, "Pretty interesting. Kind of the reversal of the sessions we had on 'Blue Nebula'. Instead of Quillington being the dominating force behind the band, it was my turn to shine. Most of my singing and songwriting efforts, with the exception of 'Strobe' on our previous album, had been relegated to B-Sides. So, it was nice having a couple moments like 'Faust' and 'Chaos Reigns' to shine on the album."

Lyrics

"And there was only ever you and I
A light at the end of the tunnel blurring all the shadows
And you’re already gone
Another missed opportunity waiting to be declined

But you truthfully never really had a chance
Before the rough landing you will always slip and slide
But still you want to feel the push
Beginnings are always the sudden drop, it’s the middle that drags on

Love, jump from the burning bridge to become one with the stars"

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Beautiful Solace
(3:28)

Song Description

The lyrics bring the thematic elements of the previous two songs to a conclusion; the narrator's personal faults have now seeped into every aspect of his life, causing him to blame others for his own shortcomings. Envy undercuts the furious rant, showcasing the mind of a failed artist's jealousy at those more successful. This song also has subtle references to the mythology of the band, as Eric Quillington has always doubted the quality of his work with Infinite. Lines such as 'Infinity is arrogance' give surprising insight into the enigmatic frontman's mind.

A militaristic drum intro begins this song, immediately setting the aggressive tone. A thundering piano motif, combined with the drums, serve as the primary rhythm to the song. Spasms of a bass line can be heard in the background, giving the song a schizophrenic and scattershot feel. For the first verse and chorus, Quillington's vocals are dripped with echo and delay, making him seem both distant and ghost-like. By the time of the second half, all effects on his voice have faded away. What's left is a forceful delivery, and is one of Quillington's most powerful vocal performances. Cuts of his vocals jitter in and out of audibility, further enhancing the mood created by the bass. After the second chorus, all noises drop except for the piano, playing the haunting motif for several seconds before a complete stop.

Quillington has admitted that this song does have a personal undertone, as he explains; " I've always been slightly self-conscious about my own thoughts and feelings, and have always hid them behind a smokescreen of sarcasm. I figured it was time to share some of my insights on the world, but I didn't want it to just be a confessional ballad. I mean, that's completely what this band is against. Instead, I thought of this; at every bar, there's that drunk old man. He sits on his stool, and claims to know all the answers. So he just blurts them out to anybody close to him. That's how I wanted this song to be presented."

Lyrics

"It always seems that a blurred viewpoint is preferred
While you draw the beauty of the world, I’ll write smut
Living in a shadow has the benefit of a nice breeze
Your lies assure me that I’ll never do any wrong
The truly gifted are the ones who never speak their minds

Words are nothing, melody is everything
Exposed emotion needs sugar coating
Stereotypes are accurate, cynicism is truth

It always seems like the tilted angle is preferred
There’s no point in life if everyone is perfect
Fractured reasoning justifies envy and greed
Cryptic writings never have a false viewpoint
The only way I’ll feel better is by dragging you down

Infinity is arrogance, dreams are limited
Creativity dries up just as it blooms
Poets are liars, artists are blind"

Shades of Grey
(4:21)

Song Description

'Shades of Grey' is one of the most powerful and emotional vocal performances of Quillington's career. In a way, this is Infinite stripped to the metaphorical bone.

The song begins with a simple acoustic strumming pattern by Matt Roberts, which continues for several seconds without any other noises. Quillington's melancholy vocals soon after join in the mix, in a way that exposes the narrator's sadness and regret without seeming angst-ridden. The singer has stated that he was most influenced by John Lennon's vocal performance of 'Imagine' when recording this song. The only sounds heard for the first two verses are Quillington's vocals and Robert's acoustic strumming, but Oldson's quiet drumming enters the fray for the third verse. After the third verse, all noises cut out except for the acoustic strumming. A piano, played by Quillington, can be heard mimicking the song's vocal melody before a gentle fade-out.

Quillington went through numerous lyrical changes before finally settling on the finalized version. The repeating line of, 'But you don't care because you're preoccupied with shades of grey' was changed because, in his own words, it made the song seem too political. In addition, he had no intention of the song appearing that it was blaming a specific person for what's wrong with the world, and simply wanted the song to be a universal acceptance of the evils in the world.

When asked about how he felt about the song, Greg Oldson said, "I'm rather fond of it, actually. Almost every album has the typical 'sad ballad', but I really think ours is something special. Quillington's vocals are usually so sarcastic and indifferent, so it's really shocking to hear him sing with such emotion. There's an elegance in it's simplicity, too; there aren't any added instrumentals to make it sound more rich and complex, it's just a straightforward barring of the soul. It's excusable to show yourself like that every now and then, I think."

Lyrics

"Monday changes to Friday, all in a day
But why should anyone care when they’re preoccupied with shades of grey?
Tracing many circles to see if there’s still a line
Although the edges are jagged, there’s nothing left to refine

These many demons are unfamiliar even at the bay
But why should anyone care when they’re preoccupied with shades of grey?
Bright lights are slowly fading inside of my mind
Missing the lost opportunities that were never even declined

Friday changes to Monday, all in a day
But why should anyone care when we're preoccupied with shades of grey?
The polluted clouds prevent us from seeing the stars align
Although the edges are jagged, there’s nothing left to define"

OOC: Thanks so much, man! I've been slightly disappointed by the lack of comments, since my thread for 'Midnight Skies' received so much more attention than this. But, as long as people are enjoying Insomnia, I'm happy!

I've always viewed you to be pretty incredible, as well; for someone so young, it's amazing the kind of impact you've made on the music industry. Collaborating with you on your upcoming album has been one of the highlights of my year so far!
