SONG THAT INSPIRED A FINE TUNE

I'd love to say 21st Century Schizoid Man, but I saved the instrumental part of that song for later in the album. No, I've chosen another classic song as the Inspiration for 'A Fine Tune and A Nice Bottle of Champagne Will Get Any Belle At The Ball Into Your Bed'.

'Time' is a classic that will always influence my musical work in some way, shape or form. If you want to know how I believe 'Fending On Your Own' sounds, then listen to this.

5. Walking In The Footsteps of Ghosts [4:59] (Feat. Bill Owens of Anima)

Overview:
Renee:
“I actually wrote this song while I was on a Modest Mouse binge and I was listening to Interstate 8. This is my poor attempt at trying to make similar sound. Oh well Black Hole Kids, hopefully you’ll love it.”

Also, while we were working on the beginning production for the album, we were looking for someone to work with and Bill Owens showed up. So, he ended up doing a rogue verse and here’s the song!

Sound: The song begins with a thunderous drumline and loud distorted guitar riffs that battle each other for supremacy(courtesy of Gary and Winston). The battle of guitar riffs forms a solo which carries on for exactly a minute before Gary shouts, “ENOUGH!” and Renee begins her own single strum riff which slowly becomes more intricate as the song’s lyrics begin. Slowly Paul begins drumming lightly and precise. After the lyrics end the beginning riffs are played backwards with different drumming tempo and the song duly ends.

Lyrics:
In the distance of the dawn I see footsteps
Quietly moving to an unknown destination
Frantic and neverending as they boom through the dawn

Silently their owners whisper
Stories that I’ve never heard in tongues that I speak
Speak when I’m lost

[Owens:]

Through my window I see the footsteps of ghosts
Moving through the mist along the shore
I have shades of yesterday yearning for me
Questions from days past and mentions from things gone
I linger on I linger on
Till the days stop running.
Yeah.

Personnel:
Renee Belamont - Vocals/Bass Guitar
Winston Marsh - Guitar
Gary Finch - Guitar
Paul Glover - Drums
Bill Owens - Vocals
Naoki Amane - Mixing/Production

6. A Plus Minus Affair [2:14] (Feat. Taylor Ashbridge of Dead Roses)

Overview: We were beginning the recording of Steadfast Kids when we met up with Taylor Ashbridge of Dead Roses. We had the ideas for a song down and invited him to do vocals for it so here it is.

Sound: The song begins with a heavy, punk rock-ish riff. Paul follows up with some heavy bass drum work and snare drumming. After this intro, the song becomes more refined with lighter guitar work and bass playing that backs it up. The drumming is also light and utilizes cymbals heavily. All the singing is done by Dead Roses’ Taylor Ashbridge. The screaming is done by Winston Marsh.

(ITALICS = SCREAMS)

Lyrics:

Plus minus affairs aside
I don’t think that we’ll be friends
I’ll see you on the other side
I hope you’ll know
That things between us are no different
That things between us are no different

I thought we were friends
Lock eyes with my fear

These words I speak today
Hold steadfast in my heart
These things I’ll say tomorrow
It’ll bring us together and give us a new start

Personnel:
Winston Marsh - Screaming Vocals
Gary Finch - Lead Guitar
Paul Glover - Drums/Percussion
Renee Belamont - Bass
Taylor Ashbridge - Clean Vocals
Naoki Amane - Production/Mixing

7. May You Be In Heaven, A Full Half-Hour.... [Part 1, Featuring Reported Failure's Matt Collins ] [12:32]

Overview: This song continues the tale weaved by the album with Graham, going to Church and all. In the end, this is our jam song. We got into the studio and just fucked around with everything we loved and wanted on the album and this Garage/Thrash song came out at the end. The other effects were added later on.

Sound: The song starts out with church bells ringing for half a minute, more towards forty seconds. Then, there’s absolute silence for another half a minute, with background noises slowly becoming prominent. Birds chirping, childrens’ laughter, cars engines starting and turning over.

All of these sounds come to an abrupt halt, the only sound being the faint hum of an airplane’s propellers. During this comes the first verse which is sung by Matt Collins, in the verse he’s acting as a Priest.

After this comes a few wheezing coughs and a light piano interlude which lays the groundwork for the second act of the song. The refrain is light and soft, showcasing Greggory Marsh’s skills on the piano.

Finally, the song comes to it’s climax. Thunderous drumming which massively utilizes the bass and kick pedal shakes the listener’s soul. After a quick drumming solo courtesy of Paul, Gary and Winston kick in with raging guitar playing that doesn’t quite battle against each other for supremacy but rather wraps around each riff so they play off each other, creating a chemistry that rocks the listener. There’s no lyrics, just playing for a straight five minutes that ends with a single bass chord being played repeatedly.

Lyrics:
[Matt Collins:]
My son, I dearly regret what you have done
For I, your father know you hath sinned
From divine intervention you cannot run
My son, we have you pinned
So take these words without the bitter sense of malice
I will be saving you no matter the cost
I shall change your ways and introduce you to the Heavenly Palace
We shall regain your innocence lost!

Overview: For a long time we thought this would be the name of our album, Black Hole Kids because our generation is the Generation of The Black Hole in my opinion. We’re selfish and devoid of diversity really, I mean the vast majority. So here we are playing music that laments about other generations, the Lost Generation, The Best Generation and so on. It’s a really meaningful song in a way.

Sound: The song features a constant slow bass riff that sets the backdrop for the rest of the song. It’s also one of the songs on the album without any screams, it’s just regular old Rock, with hints of grunge. The riffs are basic and it takes a backseat to Winston’s singing, in which he laments about how uncomplicated things used to be. Singing backing vocals(personified in the [brackets]) is Renee and Sam Maine’s verse is really about nothing. Really. The guitar work slows down during the Chorus, and Winston heavily utilizes a distortion pedal during this.

Lyrics:
Holding off for your love
I’m a cannonball
Nothing like it [Oh yeah/Oh yeah]
Baby you don’t know
They speak in other tongues for me [Oh no/Oh no]

Whispered lies and shattered dreams
Nothing like it for me
Torn jeans at the seam
Nothing more to see [No/No]
Cuz’ we’re a buncha Black Hole Kids[Black Hole Kids]
Tearing away emotion and color
We’re unlike any other [Yeah/Yeah]

Call back the memories of days
Days long past
Forget the words that I spoke
On top of that rock
Years ago [Oh Oh Oh]
Use your eyes babygal
Nothing’s ever that hard
Use your friends ol’ pal
To break through the new frontier onward

Whispered lies and shattered dreams
Nothing like it for me
Torn jeans at the seam
Nothing more to see [No/No]
Cuz’ we’re a buncha Black Hole Kids[Black Hole Kids]
Tearing away emotion and color
We’re unlike any other [Yeah/Yeah]

[Sam:]
No words to set me apart
That old old century [Past Past Past]
Oh old friend we should start
Taking back our old country [PSST]
Don’t speak about my own friends like that
And it’s nothing left to see
So c’mon c’mon
Dance with me

Whispered lies and shattered dreams
Nothing like it for me
Torn jeans at the seam
Nothing more to see [No/No]
Cuz’ we’re a buncha Black Hole Kids[Black Hole Kids]
Tearing away emotion and color
We’re unlike any other [Yeah/Yeah]

9. Kinder Days [1:45]

Overview: Pretty much just a lament to back when we were kids and all.

Sound: Begins with a quick lick from Renee’s bass before Winston speeds through the first few lyrics. After this though, he gets his bearings down and begins a steady rhythm with Renee backing him up(reminiscent of Radiohead’s Creep) with Paul starting a slow backbeat pattern. The song ends abruptly afterwards.

Lyrics:

Back then I felt like I might lose you
To the vices of the New World

But it’s different now that I’ve found my own way in life
We’ve all seen Kinder Days
But you and your old school ways
You used to be sharp as a knife
As a beautiful as a star on the skyline
Lovely like the rarest flower
You left me with a feeling that made me feel quite fine
And your eyes, they carried a certain power
A glimmer of hope that shined through my heart
Gave it the old fashioned kickstart

10. I’ve Never Cared About Anyone Less Than You and Now All I Want to Do Is Howl At The Moon, Find Another Nice Girl and Settle Down Maybe If I Didn’t Have A Full-Fledge Problem With Commitment. As It Happens Though, I Do, Ergo You Are The Only Option [6:45]

Overview: This song is about back when we first started...a perfect outro actually. Its really about how no one had faith in us when we first began and we had to drag ourselves up from the depths into the public eye.

Sound: The song begins with steady guitar work before there’s quick drumming that peppers through out the sound. The steady guitar stays constant throughout the song as well before a second guitar comes in, this one loud and distorted. Once the chorus arrives, the distorted guitar loudens and rips through the track before all instruments stop and a short dialogue spoken between Paul Glover and Winston Marsh begins to the steady guitar. After the short dialogue, all that’s left is static...
Lyrics:

Whatever you do just don’t leave me here burning
Burning for the feeling of your touch
Because of all these lives our world keeps on turning
I didn’t want you to stop, abrupt
So why can’t I hear your voice any longer
Why isn’t your grip getting any stronger
I feel we’re losing our pace
I fear you’re leaving this place

I don’t regret leaving with you
I can’t stop myself
I can’t hold this feeling
For long For long
I don’t know what to do
But stand in this very place while I’m waiting for you

[Say, kids your age are all out partying and having fun, why aren’t you?]

[Because, I’m devoting my life to his guitar...my lifeblood.]

[Heh! Kid, don’t you know, the only thing that guitar leads to is a life of emptiness and shattered promises.]

[Sure I do old man, that’s why...once I get to the top I’m gonna burn as hot as a red dwarf, become such a fucking spectacle that everyone will see me once I’m equivalent to the sun...and when I burn out into ash, I’ll be the first memory on everyone’s mind!]
