Kato' Comyns, 17-year-old brother of
Moronic Changeling pianist Damien, is
Kamikaze Kate's little 'project'. (See what I did there? Three name-drops in one sentence. Nice one, Cayla!) Meaning that Kate is coaching him to become a musician .... not sure how well that'll go, considering that Kate was never the most talented tool in the shed herself, but it'll be interesting! Today, Cayla Hotline talks to him about his debut single 'One Of You', working with Kate and other things! Hi, Kato!
Kato : Hi Cayla!
C : So, as I said, your debut single 'One Of You' is out soon, this coming Monday in fact - I've heard that it's been described as a 'tear-jerker'. Why is this?
K : The subject matter is kind of - pushing it a bit. Kind of, I don't know, daring for a debut. I mean, if I was like, Stephanie Fierce and had sold millions of albums, had millions of fans who'd love me whatever I put out, then sure. But nobody knows who I am.
C : I heard that it's in story form. Take us through the story, Kato.
K : It's from the point of view of a guy who has a BFF, real close, and the two guys have this bridge which is 'their place', they've been hanging out there since they were kids. Now they're older and the BFF's got a girlfriend, who means a lot more to him than his friend does now. Which would piss the first guy off, right?
C : Yes, it would - go on.
K : He's a nice guy, he tries hard not to be annoyed, because there's only one of his friend. Then he's on the bridge, and he sees the girl cheating. And she tells him to jump. And - he does, because he didn't want to tell his friend that she was cheating, because it would hurt him too much. If that makes any sense. It probably doesn't.
C : It does! Well done for coming up with such a good storyline! Very individual! Though it is, as you say, quite - gritty. Most new stars wouldn't take the risk of coming up with more than something basic.
K : I know. But I don't want to be like that. I'm a mini-Moronic, and hey, they started out singing about a shop assistant, and are still doing very well after 13 albums.
C : About being a 'mini-Moronic' as you call it. Would you say that you're in the shadow of Damien, what with his bandmates being legendary and you being new?
K : No, he's in the shadow of me! Haha. No, I wouldn't say that at all.
C : Would he?
K : Yes, probably. He can be a bit of a douchebag, especially when he's with Dan. They're like some sort of double act, really close.
C : REALLY close!?
K : You mean, as in .... not THAT close!
C : Aww, I was hoping to pick up some gossip there! You do hang out with them a lot - anything you can tell me about Damien and Dante?
K : Go ask them. They know everything about each other. More than I know.
C : Are you sure they're not ....
K : SURE! Well, not completely sure but I DON'T WANT TO KNOW! This is my brother and my friend we're talking about!
C : OK, onto a more comfortable subject - Kamikaze Kate.
K : So, Damien eh?
C : About Kate, musicwise. How much has working with Kamikaze Kate impacted on your music?
K : Big, big impact, just like a kamikaze pilot. My music would be much poppier if I didn't have Kate behind me. She says that I'm not as 'metal' as she wanted, but we're gonna make me rock more. It's a compromise, but I have to work harder.
C : Why do you have to work harder, rather than her pushing the goalposts back!?
K : I didn't walk into Kate's office and sign a contract with "I'll give you a half-arsed attempt". This is what I said I'll do, and I'm going to do my best. Kate did the same six years ago, and I'm going to do it now. I may be sort of indie rock kind of thing now, but I can work at it, trust me.
C : You're very driven, Kato!
K : I guess I am. No fear, no tears.
C : You seem to want to impress Kate ....
K : I do, because she's my manager and artists should impress their managers.
C : What's it like having a manager one month younger than you?
K : It's pretty cool. I guess I relate to her more as we're closer in age.
C : Now, you're dating Isabel ....
K : Correction. I am going on one date with Isabel. She's a wonderful girl, and it should be fun, but we're not committed.
C : .... and Kate's married to Jimmy, but do you and Kate ever think ....
K : NO! No way. Don't take my work home, sorry! And even if I did, KamiKate is not my type. End of.
