We caught up with Jace Pritchard and Jye Mullen from up-and-coming Australian Metalcore band VERIZON earlier this week to talk about recording, touring, and how they formed. Here’s how it went;

Interviewer: I'm here with Jace Pritchard and Jye Mullen from Aussie Metalcore band Verizon, thanks for being here guys.
Jye Mullen: No problem.
Jace Pritchard: Thanks for having us, man.

Q. Can you guys give me us some info on your childhoods and how Verizon formed?
Jace Pritchard: Sure. We all grew up in Byron Bay, its a little surf town on the East Coast of Australia. Pretty much everyone in the town just surfed and just hung out at the beach all day, went to school occasionally but if the surf was good we would just skip school and go surfing.
Jye Mullen: Yeah, it’s not a bad place to live in. Beautiful beaches, always good surf, warm weather, it’s basically perfect. There’s only one high school, so we all went to the same school pretty much and we’d meet each other in the surf and stuff like that. So everyone in the band kinda knew each other before we formed Verizon.
Jace Pritchard: At first, Byron pretty much had no music scene; it was just a handful of kids listening to this type of music that just seemed so out of place in our town.
Jye Mullen: I started a Punk band when i was like 14 or 13 called Backwards Thinking, and then a couple of years later we kinda evolved into Metalcore.
Jace Pritchard: The idea for Verizon came around mid-2008. Jye and Oli initially talked to me about starting a Metalcore band and i got Lachlan to come play bass at a jam session but after that we realized that we needed another guitarist.
Jye Mullen: I’d heard of this weird surfer guy who played metal called Alex and I had a chat to him in the surf one day about maybe coming and having a jam and he was down for it and came to the next jam and joined from then.

Q. How old are you guys?
Jace Pritchard: Our whole band is 23 years of age except for our drummer Oli who’s only 19.

Q. Who are some musical influences for each of you?
Jace Pritchard: Well some of my favourite bands are blink-182, NoFx, MYPX, Millencolin and Bad Religion, so that’s where our kina punk side comes from. We are like a Metalcore band with a Punk singer who also screams basically.
Jye Mullen: Yeah, Jace is the only one of us who’s really into punk. I mean, we all listen to it a bit but he just loves it. For me, some of my favourite bands are Metalcore and Hardcore bands like The Devil Wears Prada, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains and Atreyu.

Q. Where are you guys in terms of recording and releasing material at the moment?
Jace Pritchard: We just finished recording our self-titled debut EP last week and it’ll be out on the 23rd of July. We did all the writing ourselves and Jye did all the producing.

Q. Sounds good, and are you planning on touring any time soon?
Jye Mullen: Yeah, we just released tour dates today our website and we’re going on tour from the 20th of July until sometime in late August so we’re super stoked about that. Like, we’ve done little tours around New South Wales but we’ve never played interstate which we are doing on this tour.

Q. Alright, I look forward to checking you guys out. Are there any bands that you want to tour with?
Jace Pritchard: Not right now, we want to tour by ourselves for this one tour at least but after it then we’ll be up for touring with anyone.

Q. Well that’s all we have time for. Thanks for coming here boys and i’ll look forward to picking up the EP and check you out on the Australian Coast to Coast Tour.
Jace Pritchard: Thanks for having us here man.
