HEARTLESS SWANSEA SIN CITY JULY 9TH 2011 **** * - Poor ** - Average *** - Good **** - Excellent ***** - AmazingAfter support from local bands that Heartless have shared the best and worst of times with over the last couple of years, the support acts seem somewhat honoured to be supporting them at this show. The venue is packed, the energy building, Heartless are gathered backstage, the stage is ready, as the lights dim, the crowd roars with excitement, this is Heartless' first headline show in Newport, and the first time they have played Six Feet Under since summer last year, so to almost sell it out is very impressive.
As the band come on to the sound of a very dark intro track produced by the band themselfs, as the into rumbles the speakers, the band make their way on stage, jumping into a song from their EP Maggots to open their show bringing the place alive before rolling into an old song Hollow, that kicks off the first cirlce pit of the night. a hectic start to the final bands set, which is a good thing for a hardcore band to do Swansea, what the fuck is up?' shouts vocalist Jimmy Standon This is a fucking great night for us, because this is the first time we've ever headlined Newport, and there are four fucking hundred of you here!' The crowd screams as Jimmy continues to talk, Everyone shut up! he commands the crowd And there's only one thing we can do tonight, which is DRINK THE FUCK UP. As the band band play Drink Up! which is also from the older songs. Altough the song was written in the bands earlier days, it still pleases the crowd and delivers the punch that it was intended to deliver when written in 2009 The band slow things down a little bit for a song, so the crowd can get their breath back. Knives, a song from the Sharks! EP is performed with an acoustic guitar as all of the band except for vocalist Jimmy walk off stage, a very impressive, intense and emotional version of the song certainly impresses the Heartless crowd.
At the end of Knives, the venue stands in complete darkness, the word Heartless is chanted until Jimmy introduces the next song. As you know, we're writing an album right now, and we're almost done with it, we're recording it in our hometown of Cardiff in September, and if it's okay with you guys, we want to play you a song called Graveyard which is from the album, so I hope you fucking enjoy this song as much as we've enjoyed writing it, this is the very first time we're playing this. It's heavy as fuck, so let me see this place explode, THIS SONG IS CALLED GRAVEYARD. if that song was anything to go by, the album is going to be something to look out for when it's released.
The band give no introduction to the next song, all they say is that it's a cover by one of their favourite pop artists After an into that dragged on longer than expected, the band broke into the song Do it like a dude (Jessie J). The band straight away roll into the title track to their EP Sharks! Altough the cover of Jessie J was good, it felt that it could have done with a more melodic approach, and the performence of Sharks was a lot heavier than expect, altough, did please the crowd, in the middle of the song, Jimmy found himself on top of the crowd.
Newport, lose your fucking minds. This is the first song we ever wrote, make it count, show us what you've got is the command given by the Heartless frontman, and the crowd did just that for the first ever Heartless song, as Ragdoll is stopped halfway through the set, a wall of death is opened by the band, the biggest possible for the venue, stretching right across the width of the stage, showing why Welsh crowds are known as the craziest in the UK.
Newport, it's been fun, but we've gotta go! Thank you so much you've been amazing, this is our last song, it's from our EP it's called A Liars Truth thank you guys so much Altough the band have never closed with that songbefore, it proves to be a wise move as the outro sets the perfect vibe for Heartless to walk off stage.
The bands recent success has shown in their live shows, they are showing why they're on the uprise so quickly, keep a look out for their album coming later this year.
