ElectroDeath at Rolling Stone
ElectroDeath has gone through a lot of things over the past years. In Sales they exceed the volume of 30 million records, with three Studio albums, one remix album and one live DVD, which is a great Mark by an artist nowadays, specially an electronic one like them.
But not only of good moments they carrier is made, three years ago they had to stop a worldwide tour due to a sickness their main vocalist, Magie Lena has passed, lots of people in music industry speculated that it was the end of the band, but all of them was wrong! After three years from that they have release a multi platinum album and a successful tour, and now they currently releasing their fourth studio album which comes full of collaborations and a brand new style to their electronic music.
Rolling Stone went to LA, where band is right now rehearsing their upcoming tour, to make the first interview of this new era in ElectroDeath’s story!
RS: You girls have passed through a lot of things and situations in your career, also you have seen lots of things happen in the industry, what you girls have learned from all of your past years in the business?
Magie: Ohh, we have changed a lot! When we first started it was like, everything was just so new and fresh, you know, and when we passed through a certain bad moment in our career that would sound like the end of the world for us, we have some issue with records labels in the past, that was so hard for us to handle in that time, but not anymore, of course now we are in a good record label, we have good people with us, we feel safe somehow, but I can say that we are very grown up of a lot of things that could happen with us in this business.
RS: You have conquered a lot of fans in different parts of the world; do you think that maybe it can end some day?
Magie: I think that we have to keep them all interest in us, I mean, we don’t let them to take time from us, because we are always making something new and fresh to feed them with news and stuffs, but who knows, in this world happens a lot of things that sometimes are inexplicable, so anything can happen and we are not completely safe… but I think they love us **laughs**.
Yulia: well at lest we love them.
RS: what is new in ElectroDeath that would make them interest in you this time?
Magie: definitely this is a very unusual and experimental time for us, we have grown musically, and artistically, and this reflects in our work.
RS: Are you talking about the album?
Magie: Yes, but not only about the album, every moment in our career we took a personality, when we was promoting Wrong! Our last album, we used to be a more closed band, in social aspects, but now we are so open to a lot of things, it is the first time that we realizes how big the world can be, so why don’t go and make friends and put them together in an album or something.
RS: So this is the main reason this album is full of collaborations?
Magie: Yes, we wanted try some experimental stuffs, We won’t be able to do by ourselves, and also we were so happy at the same time that we started to invite people to work with us, to meet people in concerts, we started to try things that we have never tried before.
Yulia: It was insane when we sand to Daniel the email asking him to collaborate with us, I mean we always were great fans of his work, but never though in working with him before, but then this time has come, and we were so receptive to new ideas that we invited him.
RS: Was that the same feeling of working with Miss Vanity?
Magie: Miss Vanity was a gift for us, we wanted to work with her since the first album we made, but I think only right now we were brave enough to invite her.
Yulia: The bad thing, it’s that she has passed away, and that is so hard for us to handle, cause she was our main idol!
RS: Did you guys already decide what are you going to do with the song you made with her?
Magie: Yes, we discussed it a lot, because the concept of the album and the tour was built under this songs inspiration, you know, the name of the song is “WICCA” the same as the tour…
Yulia: So we decided to release, but in respect to Miss Vanity’s family without her vocals
RS: You have worked with Buzz & Hype, what made you girls to invite them to collaborate in the album?
Magie: They were starting producing remixes for a lot artists that we love very much, then we decide to invite them to make a remix of one of our new songs, but our partnership was so great and the remix sounded so great that we showed them some others songs that were uncompleted in the album.
Yulia: and they started to give us some new ideas, and some really great one!
Lilly: we also wrote an entire song in one day at the studio, which in my opinion it’s one of the most fun and happy songs we ever made.
Magie: and they are so cute *laughs* and fun to work… I can say they were a big surprise for us, we couldn’t expect nothing but what really happened. And the results are great!
RS: You guys are talking about Wicca, which is sort of a religion, but basically what are the inspirations for doing this album?
Magie: We started from the idea of making a happy and soft album, our last album was so deep and dark, that we wanted to try some lighter and softer things this time, we also used lots of ambient sounds and some trip hop melodies, lyrics are still a bit controversies, but that it’s just the way we write music, but melodies are so softer than before.
Yulia: The lyrics of the songs are heavily influenced of WICCA philosophies, which are not less than self-respect, and love the world like you love yourself.
RS: “When Your Heart’s Not Open” was a great track, but a very unusual one, does that represents how the album will sound?
Yulia: Honestly, no.
Lilly: The album is full of up-tempo songs, of course “When Your Heart’s Not Open” represents the album in some aspects, but it is really a unique song on the set list.
Magie: The next single which will be one of the tracks we produced with Buzz&Hype will represents this other face of the album, which is happy and free.
RS: You’re going embark in a brand new tour, and as we can see here, your stage is huge, you’re going to have amazing supporting acts, how is it going to be?
Magie: The tour will be completely different from our last tour, started on stage, outfits, remix of some songs we have, also we are planning some covers, we are trying to show people the importance of nature and wild live in our ambient, so we are going to have water, fire you know.
Yulia: We are going to travel with AMAZING acts, some new ones, some a little bit old on the industry…
Lilly: everyone is being so creative, and so excited about the tour, I think this is going to be our best ever!
RS: what artists are you going to cover?
Lilly: its surprise…
Magie: People will have to go on tour to see, but we are going to have some interaction of others artists on tour, such as videos, and also with the acts that will be traveling with us!
RS: Ok **laughs** but what artists are you listening nowadays?
Magie: Pretty much everything, I like to listen all artists, it’s healthy for us to be tuned of what is going on with the industry, every day I’m downloading a new song…
Yulia: I’m in love with rock music right now, so I’m listening to a lot of rock bands out there.
Lilly: I love teen artists… LOL, all those young bloods producing exciting things… it’s so cool.
RS: You worked with so many different acts and producers for this album is there any other one you guys would like to work with?
Magie: If I could I would like to work with everyone… LOL I love new things…
Yulia: We worked with Brittany Knox and Hanna Beth recently, which is AMAZING.
RS: the album will be called “The sun is rising”; do you think the sun has risen for you girls?
Magie: after a lot of bad moments, I think it finally raised, and I’m feeling warm by its hot rays and very happy too.
Yulia: I still live in a shadow **laughs** but I choose to live in shadow so…
Lilly: Of course it has risen to me, I have my man beside me, my girls and my family and my amazing fans! Fantastic what more
could I ask for?
RS: Everyone is talking Yulia, about some issues you had with Katie Coyle and Andre Manson, would you like to talk about that?
Yulia: First I wanna make things clear, I love Katie, and I have nothing against her, I just have so many things to do right now with work, I decided to be a part of her life.
RS: Did you guys think about a solo project?
Magie: I love ElectroDeath, I love electronic music, so I think for me there is no way I’m going to make a solo project... but if one my mates would do I think it would be all right as long as the band remains untouched.
Yulia: Glad you ask that, we are so cool together, there is no way we would disband at all, but in our next vacations, I’m gonna enter in a studio to record a rock album! It’s my dream you know, and I know it is not an ElectroDeath album that’s why I’m thinking to make this project by myself, but it will not affect the band at all…
Lilly: I’m complete with ElectroDeath, no wishes for a solo project…
RS: What about your charity foundation girls, the “Help Kids who attempt suicide”?
Magie: It’s better than ever! We have four centers around USA, six around Brazil and three more around Europe! And they are all receiving donations from us and from our fans, and also from governments too, it’s just so cool to know that we can do something good for people that wished to be dead.
Yulia: We started to help kids, and now we are helping adults too and the results are just being GREAT!
RS: Magie, your sister, Abie Lena has released her debut single, what do you think about her work?
Magie: Aw, she is such a great singer, her voice is just, OMG, of course I’ll always will support her and the song is just great! I’m so happy for her.
RS: Thank you so much for receiving us girls.
Magie: Ow, thank you for the lovely interview.
Yulia: Thanks.
Lilly: You’re welcome.
