Michelle Green Interview on Radio 1 with Chris Moyles

Chris Moyles: That was Sammy Griffin with Please Don’t Go, I never planned on going anywhere Sammy, I promise. And now I’m joined by a very beautiful young girl, with a huge smile on her face, Michelle Green is here to discuss her upcoming album.

Good Afternoon Michelle, How’s it going?
Michelle: It’s going great thanks Chris, I’ve been pretty busy but I’m used to that now (giggles)

Yes, it’s still quite hard to believe that your only 16, you’ve achieved so much so far
Michelle: Awww thanks, well it’s like almost a year since I released my debut album and now I’m working hard on the follow up, it’s exciting times for me right now.

Would I be wrong in saying that you deal with the level of fame easily?
Michelle: Umm, I don’t know really, I guess I started out at fifteen and I’ve sort of been in the spotlight ever since, I guess I’ve just tried to live my life as normally as I can, but sure there’s sometimes when it just gets too much and I need to sort of put myself in that little bubble of ignorance, we’ve all gotta block out things and you know I wouldn’t say it was easy to stay calm and live a normal life, the attention on musicians are pretty huge anyway and it’s even bigger on younger musicians and we all find it tough sometimes, but I guess I’m pretty level headed and this is what I’ve wanted for as long as I remember so you gotta take the bad to have the good.

It’s an interesting approach, you’ve certainly not been in the headlines so much recently.
Michelle: Yeah I’ve just sort of got my head down and focussed on my own things, I try to keep my private life private in the hope that I can be judged on my music, I learned a lot during my relationship with Matty and it’s pretty obvious that it just enhances the attention on you, people always wanna know who your dating and if you end up dating a fellow musician well then expect a media frenzy because it’s gonna happen whether you like it or not.

And that’s perhaps the case with several musicians, Matty and Cherise, Isabel and Kato, Katie and Andrea.
Michelle: Yeah exactly, it’s tough for those people to deal with the pressure and attention that goes with being in a high profile celebrity relationship and I’ve got nothing but admiration for them for not being put off by the scrutiny and even the pressure, we’re all human, we like to know about people’s personal life and that probably will never change.

Do you still keep in touch with Matty, he’s obviously had a tough time recently.
Michelle: Umm, no not really, we haven’t spoken for a little while now. There’s no bad blood between us, at least not from me, I’m really sorry to hear what happened with the baby and my prayers will be going out to Cherise and Matty, I hope that everything can work out for them, obviously Matty has some issue’s but we all have our own troubles.

And what about Katie, a fellow Londoner, and a young musician who has had her own troubles.
Michelle: Katie is such an amazing talent, that’s all that’s important really, she’s incredibly talented, her album is one of the best debut album’s you’ll ever find, Sure she has her trouble’s but it’s her life and I think she deserves a break, she’s been through a lot recently.

Should we expect a collaboration sometime in the future?
Michelle: Yeah I don’t see why not, obviously providing she wants to meet up and work on something then yeah, it would be a great thing if we could get together, I know she’s probably got some stuff going on but I’d love to work with her sometime.

Could we perhaps see something between you two on your next album?
Michelle: Honestly, I don’t know yet. I had a good chunk of the album being worked on but I’m gonna be going back to the drawing board in the next couple of weeks, so if we can find time to work on something together for the album then that’s something I would definitely be interested in, like I say though, I really don’t know what her schedule is, so the only issues are, one; Will she be up for it and two; can we find time to work on something soon. Honestly though, I’d love to work with her.

Any other possible collaborators?
Michelle: There’s a few names that I’m gonna be looking at and hopefully I can be pretty, but honestly I’m just trying to figure things out right now, There’s no time-limit on this album, I did have some of the album complete, but I think I’m gonna be almost completely re-doing the whole album, but time will tell, there will definitely be a new album out in the near future.

Your also performing at the Aftermath Festival in September, what can we expect from your performance?
Michelle: I think I’m gonna be focussing on new stuff really, I’ll throw in a couple of favourite’s but it should mostly be new songs and it’s a good way to test out the new material and see how it translates to a live audience, I’m very excited about the performance though.

Ok, and finally, what is your plans for the rest of the year?
Michelle: Oh god, Uhmm. I think the next few months will be pretty much working on the new album, hopefully around September or October, I can be ready to tour the album and who knows with the rest of the time. We can’t really plan an awful lot.
