MONGOLBORD SURFINGTURD Newsletter 6Welcome one and all to this semi-irregular publication, dispensing all the latest happenings in the world of everyone's favourite avant-garde musical label Mongolbord Surfingturd. Many people have asked me, where did the name Mongolbord Surfingturd come from? What does it mean?
The answer? I don't know!
On to more pressing business. This time we're dropping three new records from three artists new to the label's burgeoning ranks. There's youngsters
Trapped Giraffago Gun Fayre, as well as an all new electronic project from MGS member Ivan named
Uethröt. Great stuff. Oh, and
Temple Lantern Caravel fans can finally relax, the rumours are true, our favourite veteran Québécois musical duo have completed their latest, long-awaited recording.
We are extremely fortunate to be able to host both up-and-coming artists and the longer-standing members of our little creative community. We hope the breadth of the label supports this, and we hope you enjoy these artists as much as we have here in Mongolbord HQ.
DOWNLOADSIn other news, we have decided to acquiesce somewhat to modern contrivances, and are offering download-codes for high-quality mp3s with every physical purchase - excluding limited edition vinyl-only releases. We have no intention at present to offer download-only options - we are too invested at this point in the physical artifice of music to let go. Considering vinyl sales have actually been increasing of late, it's not yet time to throw the baby out with the toilet water.
LIMITED EDITIONSRegarding our recent limited editions, our intention is never to drive high eBay prices for these items, it is rather that the specifics of an individual record might suggest to us that a limited run is the way to go. It is too expensive to keep certain special packages in print over time, and also some of our artists express the desire to put out additional pieces of their music that they might consider non-essential parts of their catalogues - not because they aren't worth listening to, but because they might misrepresent the artist's output as a whole. We respect and advocate our artists' rights to control their output in this way.
Consider that a forewarning that there may well be some extra-special limited editions in the near future. As always, we thank you for supporting us.

10. Nocturnal (8:14)Our very favourite wilderness wandering couple Temple Lantern Caravel return at last with a new album, their first for Mongolbord Surfingturd. These compositions form a single linear narrative, told not in specific details, but in abstract and broad images of life, death and renewal. The instrumentation is largely acoustic as usual, but the tone is at once vast and panoramic yet intimately organic.
Virgil and Lauren Lenoire recorded the majority of the album in a cottage in Alaska, allowing the outside ambience to seep into the microphones, capturing the genuine essence of the place. Further tracks were laid down on their return to Quebec, including a small choir of friends for the album's opening and closing tracks. This is perhaps the most intimate and most present recording we have yet released.

Not for the feint of heart, though still firmly rooted in the slow melodic sensibility of minimalist composers such as Riley, Reich and Adams, this record de-constructs itself, and re-builds itself out of parts of itself. See? Fragments of light and darkness trapped in static cages, sliced and diced, chopped and churned into one of the most arresting musical aesthetics to emerge from this label since its inception.

This is the quintet’s second full-length release, following up their well-received high-energy debut Pouch on Emunkha Music. The Trapped Giraffago Gun Fayre specialise in cerebral post-sludge and mathematical groan - fast and slow, loud and quiet, soft and hard sometimes all at once. Short, sharp and intense. This is fuzzed-out rock and roll meets sound art meets particle-physics. As David Byrne twice said, it's like 60 Minutes on acid.
