STEPHANIE FIERCE LIVE ON DAVID LETTERMAN // 9.28.11Show Set-list:
1. Stephanie…Sampled a Tree (Intro)
2. Tequila Shower
3. Electric Guitar Virgin
4. Dying in the Airwaves
5. Under Pressure (Queen Cover) Right before the performance, Stephanie Fierce and David Letterman sat down for a short and sweet interview. Stephanie Fierce happily discussed the new album ,”Free”, her record label Hot Eye Records, the “Newborn” tour, being a mother in the business, signing on to Mon on Fire Music and letting go of her old management team. But things got a bit more interesting when David went on to ask if she was single or not, Steph simply replied with a “no”, which was followed with a grin coming from both of them. David kept on trying to make her 'spill' on who she was dating now and even dared to mention Johnny, but no words but a grin would come out of Steph’s mouth. Due to the awkwardness David couldn’t help but cut to break with saying the following
“All right, we’ll be right back. Don’t go away because when we return, Stephanie Fierce performs”.
The instruments were set for Stephanie and her band to do their performance. A flat digital screen that served as the alternative lightning stood behind of the stage and right before David Letterman introduces her to perform; he places her “Free” album atop of his desk and says the following:
“She’s a pop icon in her own right, her new album “Free” is out in stores now, performing a mini concert just for us; please give it up for the beautiful, the very talented and the very NOT single…. Stephanie Fierce!”. He then awkwardly applauds with the audience as the camera pans to Stephanie.
The lights undim and Stephanie Fierce is seen sitting standing on the middle of the stage. A piano and guitar rest alone before the band hinting that it will eventually be used by Steph, placing the microphone in front of her; she speaks the following as a beat builds up; her voice starts growing louder like a poet in the 5th line to add emphasis to the lyrics……. Back-up singers repeat some of the words as well .
“Mother Nature
All ideas come from Mother Nature
Originality is b*llshit, so stop claiming it
We've all become predators of the successful
No one really owns the crown....But if you do, they gonna take you down
They gonna take you down (down)
They gonna take you down (down)
I said, they gonna take you down
Look out of the perspective
People are so in love with themselves....They forget how to love others
Look out of the perspective
A human being is not built to take so much negativity
Look out of the perspective
Extracting data, too many files, brain malfunction
Look out of the perspective
We can't possibly store all of it, we’ve become repulsive
Look out of the perspective (Damn it)
And all of the sudden that makes us arrogant
Look out of the perspective
So now we gotta make it on our own
Look out of the perspective
Everyone is so used to these uniformed ideas, blatant is the new false
Look out of the perspective
Cheat your way out
Let’s blur out the truth...before they find out
Steal your way out
Let's blur the truth......
Their ears grow sensitive
Fierce chromosomes forming,
take advantage
Dear Producer......
I am free, and you will not chain me
I'm looking at this tree, and I'm looking at everything
Who would of thought an idea like this, would feel so lanky
So focused on my perspective
So stuck in my perspective,
I've lost touch of the whole truth,
but my shoulder bones stick out
Cause there's no orignality
Stephanie sampled a tree
Useless mother nature made it,
Stephanie sampled a tree
All ideas are connected
Stephanie Sampled a tree
Stephanie to the computer
the computer to the outlet
outlet to the electric
electric to the power plant
Power plant to the ground
voice from stephanie
Stephanie from the womb
womb to the woman
woman to the adam
adam to the dirt
There's no such thing as originality…
Waited all for you to forgive my sins
Waited 2 years for you to really love me"
Once finishing, Stephanie can’t hold back a smile as the audience applauds in amazement. In signal and preparation of staring a new song, the drummer starts hitting his drum sticks together,as Steph makes her way to the piano. Once sitting down, without hesitations she begins to sing “Tequila Shower” with no struggle as her drummer and guitarist play. Throughout the performance Steph sings while banging her head back and forth and plays the piano more upbeat towards its original melody. She also adds harmonized vocals to some of the lyrics to give it a different spin.
"Oh no baby, we just woke up the lord,
with our loud drunk voice, our meanest chord
2 years ago I was one lonely whore... (I mean 'bitch' )
Now I'm bored
depressed thinking about things you've done
would we make another baby
or another hit song?
I lost track baby, this is so unfair
So I got my bottles lined up and my hair undone
would I have another death before my next hit al-bomb?....
(they better pray to god)
Got my New York accent on, my meanest tone
just in case this Billy guy next to you try to steal my purse
(in this dumpster bar)
would it hurt baby if I took a tequila shower with you tonight?"
After finishing the shorter version of "Tequila Shower";. Steph walks over to the electric guitar guitar and places it on her body.
"David.......this is my motherf*ckin man right now", Steph goes on to say joking to David Letterman for his previous interview question. Receiving a positive reaction from the audience, Steph begins "Electric Guitar Virgin". Immediately at the start, Steph bends her knees down to the ground to sing and play, all while on the floor. The song elctronica based composition, which is made of amen-break like build up, that's also converted to a trance like appeal is produced lively by her keyboardists. Stephanie Fiere plays a forceful and brawling guitar with driven bass, keyboards is still heard. They sound a bit psychedelic, with the guitar pedal effects. Her voice is laid back through most of the song and the lyrics are purposely sung as if Stephanie was reading them out. She almost sounds as if she’s under control and the soprano side is more present. Reaching up to the guitar solo, the spotlight is then set on her and she begins. The guitar solo mimics the chorus with emphasis and acts as a bridge. Due to Steph’s low experience with guitar solos, it’s composed to mimic the chorus. Once the guitar solo is finished, the band goes into this trance fusion like break, leading up to a classical music crossover section above a trip hop influenced beat. The band used a pre-recorded audio, since Stephanie Fierce arranged the beats with pre-recorded classical pieces. as the momentum of the performance picks up it leads to a non-stop 16 second vocal belt done by Stephanie Fierce, during so she manages to reach a vocal range from D3- E6 in her 16 second vocal belt. The audience amazed by her longevity applauds almost in disbelief. Doing so Steph moves her shoulders forward and back as she catches her breath. The band then proceeds to the trip–hop beat section while slowly fading out. While slowly fading out, you can hear distinctive melancholic noise that echoes created by a guitar pedal and Steph sings to mimic the sounds it creates. Once finished, she gets a roarring response.
"Thank you", Steph smiles to the audience.
"Let me take out a moment and speak to you all (Steph smiles),
This song is one of my favorite songs I've written and recorded. This will be my first time performing it live and televised and I'm very excited. It definitely relates to a lot of what was happening in the past few months, so here's "Dying in the Airwaves". Steph takes a deep breath, putting herself together and begins playing the on-going electric guitar bit with a bassist and second guitarist backing her up. First building up with intense discordant chords, her vocals are present to the microphone. Steph sings the first verse with deep emotion squinting her eyebrows. Her vocals are heard as warm, mellow and melancholic in the beginning and as well as choruses. Also while singing, the rest of the band focuses on creating the ambient sound founded in the fierce atmosphere with the special pedals and as well by using other specially made instruments. Steph lifts her fingers in motion and stares deeply into the camera while singing.
Once the chorus reaches, Steph sings with all her might and suddenly everything stops. Steph looks up and beings the second verse, which features hard sung/screamo like vocals. The purpose was to sing with emotion despite it sounding like she's holding back vocally. You can hear her 'fear' and presence for once. Her vocals are not about confidence, or ego-like vocals, but within all-that there, confidence somehow makes its way.
After finishing the verse, Steph proceeds to a guitar solo that acts like the chorus, and leading up to that is the chorus repeat. Finishing up, she does the outro and once finished she drops her guitar to the ground. Mouthing "Free".
"(Spoken):
They now play me.
(Verse 1 Sung):
They.... eat you, they eat me too
You tamed the noises, they're all clam now
Who these people hunting me now?...They like to listen....
They will slay me, searching for those lost emotions
But how could she not die? How could I not die?
No need to run now, just wake to defeat......
(Chorus Part 1, with SELF back up vocals in parenthesis)
Life Long Gone; (its been long now, its been long)
They forgot to listen; (its been long now, its been long)
Long Life gone; (it’s been long now, its been long)
Only you will listen, In this industry
(Part 2 of Chorus Spoken)
Ghost of your voice, acidic spit from your lips,
They could foster me
(Part 3 Repeat of Chorus, Sung with SELF back up vocals in parenthesis)
Life Long Gone; (its been long now, its been long)
They will hate me; (its been long now, its been long)
They will listen; (it’s been long now, its been long)
They will listen, In the industry
(Verse 2)
So...Fuck the radio, fuck the charts
This shit right here comes from the heart
Rock star pop star, same fucking star
You made me the star
You tore me apart.....
but I'm just a lyrical beast, from the mouth to the sheet
pop music contradictory, searching for radio hits
and I'm also a industry priest, not living life as if diseased
Some hooker whore look a like, I hear this all the damn time!
But they don't know I was doomed
born in a equivocacy womb
raised in miracle tomb
and lost my fucking damn mind
Never will be a thing of the past,
is that a forgivable crime?
(Bridge; Guitar Solo)
(Chorus Sung, with self back up vocals in parenthesis)
Life Long Gone; (its been long now, its been long)
They will hate me; (its been long now, its been long)
They will listen; (it’s been long now, its been long)
They will listen, In the industry
(Outro)
Now I'm done.
Long life.....GONE
in the airwaves......the airwaves
Dying in the airwaves
I'm dying in the airwaves
Dying in the airwaves
Dying.....
They will never play me..
I want to end things on a bright note, Everyone knows this song, it's one of my favorites. Um, QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEN?, errrr....ever feel under pressure? Steph sarcastically says. Once her band begins to play the composition in which "Vanilla Ice" sampled, Steph begins to sing her cover of Queen''s "Under Pressure". Once reaching the bridge, the audience begins clapping and cheering as Steph struts around, pointing the mic towards them as the sing along loudly and after that the original vocals of Queen are heard to end it out. She finishes and says
"Thank you" with a smile as the audience cheer on.
"Mm ba ba de
Um bum ba de
Um bu bu bum da de
Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you no man ask for
Under pressure - that burns a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets
Um ba ba be
Um ba ba be
De day da
Ee day da - that's o.k.
It's the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming 'Let me out'
Pray tomorrow - gets me higher
Pressure on people - people on streets
Day day de mm hm
Da da da ba ba
O.k.
Chippin' around - kick my brains around the floor
These are the days it never rains but it pours
Ee do ba be
Ee da ba ba ba
Um bo bo
Be lap
People on streets - ee da de da de
People on streets - ee da de da de da de da
It's the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming 'Let me out'
Pray tomorrow - gets me higher high high
Pressure on people - people on streets
Turned away from it all like a blind man
Sat on a fence but it don't work
Keep coming up with love
but it's so slashed and torn
Why - why - why ?
Love love love love love
Insanity laughs under pressure we're cracking
Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance
Why can't we give love give love give love give love
give love give love give love give love give love
'Cause love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under pressure
Under pressure
Pressure"
