Shadows and Silhouettes is the debut album of former Reckoner frontman Troy Mascenon released on October 28 under Chaos Records. The concept album was recorded in two different locations, the first location is Troy’s personal recording studio in Glasgow, and the other location was the legendary Abbey Road Studios. The album was produced by Troy Mascenon, Jason Smith, and Eric Quillington and features 8 tracks all written by Troy Mascenon. According to Troy, the album is genuinely a concept album because all of its songs have recurring themes about loneliness, depression, and darkness either lyrically or musically. The album delves deeply into Troy’s fondness for experimental music; this means that there would be some unconventional instruments or unconventional methods in the conception of a song used in some if not most of the tracks. For promotion of the album, the single In the Dark was released with an accompanying video, both of which received pretty good reviews from both critics and fans. No songs from The Hunter and The Haunted EP were included because of their irrelevance to the album's theme.

Tracklisting:
1.Fading Light
2.Less Than Zero
3.Insomniac
4.Looking Into Those Eyes(Photograph)
5.In The Dark
6.Loser
7.Empty
8.Dead End!

1.) Fading Light(4:21) (feat. Eric Quillington and Jason Smith)

Background:
The first track of the album, Fading Light, is a perfect start to a concept album filled with misery and mystery with its very light and spacey atmosphere. Fading Light is basically a song about moving on to the afterlife, it’s a song about the thoughts of one who is about to leave this life and move on to the next. The fading light is my own metaphor of holding on to this life but realizing that it would eventually end there, there is no delays, we all have our time to go. Originally conceived as an acoustic ballad, Troy, with the help of both co-producers Eric Quillington and Jason Smith, transformed the song to something much more exciting.

Troy wrote:
“Eric thought that the song sounded too boring with just an acoustic guitar and singing, I did too but was too caught up with other songs to even try something new so I left Eric and Jason with the task to make this song better while I work with the other songs. The plan was a success; Eric added some light noises with an e-bow, something that has been a part of that Reckoner sound, while Jason on the other hand wanted to use the Theremin for the song. At first, the plan sounded kind of awkward with that combination, so we added some drums and a very simple bass line to complement the whole instrumental section lets just say the results turned out the way we wanted it to.”

Song Progression:
Intro (0:00-0:42)
A simple and ear pleasing chord progression plays throughout the entire intro. After the first round of chord progression, the sliding effect of the e-bow is lightly heard as it complements the earlier riff. After the second round of chord progression, a Theremin mimics the melody of the song, adding to the light noises of the electric guitar. The full sound is now repeated for the fourth chord progression just before the first verse begins.

Verse 1 (0:42-1:10)
The drums and bass kick in as the Theremin and electric guitar fade away. Troy slowly sings with his typical high pitched voice but there is something unusual with his sound. If you listen closely there are actually three voices at work, the tenor part being sung by Eric Quillington trying to copy Troy’s singing style, the middle part being sung by Troy trying to keep his voice from soaring up, and the bass part being sung by Jason trying to sing likeTroy the best way he can, the result is a voice that actually sounds like Troy being possessed. This pattern goes on for the whole verse.

Chorus 1(1:10-2:02)
The chorus starts off with a string arrangement now replacing the Theremin, all the other instruments are still playing while the guitar shifts from just playing slides to playing a very light but quick riff repeatedly. The three voices change paths as Eric shifts to a falsetto, Troy’s voice rises up, and Jason sings different lyrics, complementing the depressing tune of the string arrangement and other instruments. The chorus ends with all other instruments fading away, followed by a barbershop quartet style “ooh” from the three vocalists, followed by the instruments coming right back in.

Bridge between Chorus and Second Verse (2:02-2:24)
This part is composed mostly of the string arrangement replacing the Theremin while the rest play the intro’s melody from the third and fourth repetitions.

Verse 2 (2:24-2:52)
The second verse sounds identical to the first verse but this time, the voices show more signs of separating as Troy sings lead vocals while Eric and Jason continue to add to the dramatic effect of the song by singing different lyrics that jive with the whole song as well.

Chorus 2 (2:52-3:44)
The Second chorus is also identical to the first chorus only this time, the tune becomes even more emotional. By the end of the second chorus, all three voices beautifully harmonize with each other as their voices dramatically soar up high. The song then slows down for the barbershop quartet style finish.

Outro (3:44-4:21)
The slightly lengthy outro is just the reverse of the intro, starting with the drums, bass, e-bow and guitar, Theremin, and acoustic, then slowly being stripped of until only the acoustic guitar is heard.

Lyrics:

(Intro)

Verse:
Fading light, just another dream crushed by reality
I held you near, so close and so endearing
I never wanted to let go but fate was harsh
And now I walk alone
Fading light, please don’t go

Chorus:
Falling from the sky (Three thousand feet away)
I bid the world goodbye (I wish that I could stay)
The light is all I have in my grasp but nothing ever lasts (Holding on to what I’ve got left)
Fading away and losing hope (Help! I’m feeling cold)
I’ve had my time; I have to go (Go)
The fading light is all I’ll ever know (All I’d ever know)

Verse 2:
Fading Light, I wish that I could stay for a while (They need me right now)
She cried and never said a word, the blissful memories made it worst (Wish the pain would stop somehow)
I want to be strong, I want to hold on (They light the candles, and hand over flowers)
But I know that I’d have to move on (The weeping lasts in their hearts forever)
Fading Light, I’m coming home (But I know that tomorrow, the sun will shine)

Chorus 2:
Falling from the sky (Three thousand feet away)
I bid the world goodbye (I wish that I could stay)
The light is all I have in my grasp but nothing ever lasts (I have to accept, the pain shall pass)
Fading away but now I know (Please be strong)
I’ve had my time; I have to go (Life is too short, please move on)
But my memory will live forever on (Forever on)

2.) Less Than Zero (3:28)

Background:
The song is the transition track between the sweet and easy sounding Fading Light, to the rough and almost hardcore Insomniac. Less Than Zero is the only track in the album written during the recording sessions since the producers felt the album had something missing, they eventually found out that they needed a transition track between Fading Light and Insomniac to make both songs fit in with the rest of the album. Troy wrote the song in only two days and was later reworked by Jason and Eric to make it the track that it is right now.

Quote:
“Less Than Zero is a track purposely written to fill the void of the album. Without this song, Fading Light and Insomniac would’ve never been part of the album; it would be a total waste of my songs because I consider those two songs as tracks that keep the album together as a concept album. So about the track itself, it took an exhausting three weeks to record everything, which I will explain later on. Less Than Zero is a song about someone who keeps dragging me down whenever I try to succeed in something, though I admit the lyrics are pretty shitty, I fell in love with the tune and the honesty of the song. Yes, the lyrics are simple and very unconvincing, but if you knew how I felt, you’d love the song deep down. Though it was supposed to be named Dragging Me Down, I have overused the word Down in many Reckoner tracks like Bring Me Down from Invisible and Falling Down and Slow Down both from Backstabber so I named the track Less Than Zero which sounds cooler. It is a very experimental track, not in the sense that I used uncommon instruments or that I sung this in Japanese or Russian, its experimental essence is found in the recording process. Eric, Jason, and I used a variety of recording techniques to make this song sound as it is right now.”

The recording techniques are the following:

• We recorded the drums on the road. We placed both the recording equipment and drum kit at the back of a pickup truck. While Eric and Jason were driving from Glasgow to London, I was playing the drums from time to time. My drum sessions were then sliced, diced, and remixed to create the current drumbeat. Since it was recorded at the back of the truck, noises from the road are slightly audible.
• The siren sound you hear during the chorus is not a siren but a digitally modified recording of my voice when I went skydiving.
• We also recorded the sound of the wind during my skydiving incident.
• The muffled sound of the verse is a product of burying the recording equipment approximately half a foot below the ground while the volume of my singing(with the help of amplification, etc.) was as loud as 80 decibels.

Song Progression:
Intro (0:00-0:47)
The song starts off with the calm sound of the wind, a smooth and slow organ melody that sounds similar to the previous song follows. Later on, the melody changes and becomes a totally different tune but stays true to the slow and smooth rhythm it started. After one repetition, the song is slowly built as the instruments come in one by one. The keyboard comes in creating an “indie pop” tune as the continuous hi hat hitting enters. A popping bass line joins in before the running guitar riff finishes the introduction off. The final tune also makes up the verses’ melody.

Verse (0:47-1:05)
Troy sings in a muffled voice, as a result of the creative genius of Jason Smith and Eric Quillington. All instrumentals from the introduction are constant throughout the verse.

Prechorus(1:05-1:25)
The prechorus is the turning point of the song, the real transition. The smoothness of Fading Light was slowly being washed away from the intro to the verse but the pre chorus finalizes the shift from soft to hard. The song’s key changes, the keys and organ fall off, and the drums become quiet for a moment, slowly building momentum.

Chorus (1:25-1:57)
The organ sound is completely gone and is now replaced by a more dominant and heavy bass line accompanied by grittier guitars. The siren is heard throughout the chorus and Troy sings the repetitive and catchy chorus, unlike pop songs, it doesn’t get irritating (OOC:ahaha!xD)

Solo (1:57-2:27)
The bass and drums are consistent in what they are playing while the guitar is played with a wah wah pedal. The whaling solo is very similar to Tom Morello’s playing style, the reason why listeners mistake this solo as “copied from Killing In The Name”, the solo shifts from really quick and technical in the first half but slows down to the melody of the song in the second half, complementing the build up for one final chorus.

Chorus 2 (2:27-2:53)
The final chorus is more noisy and chaotic then the first one, this time the background is consisted of three different voices that accompany Troy’s lead vocals. One is a continuous echoing voice that gives a smooth undertone to the song, the second is a very operatic and emotional voice, and the third is Troy’s attempt to growl, yes growl. These three voices complete the already chaotic sound of the chorus since the siren gradually gets louder, the guitars create more noise than music, and the drums bang even harder as the song goes to an epic finale.

Outro (2:53-3:28)
The outro is mainly composed of 4 guitars battling out to create a wall of noise (something Troy has always been fond of), the drums and bass gradually become louder until everything turns chaotic. The song then suddenly stops.

Lyrics:
(Intro)

Verse:
You push me around, never really gave the chance to shine
I make it around; I try to make it mine
You live on jealousy, you feed on my dreams
You piss on my parade, you laugh as you leave

Prechorus:
I try to climb the hill, you push me back
I try to live my life, you won’t give me back
All I ever wanted was to be on my own

Chorus:
You keep dragging me down, dragging me down
Less than zero feet beyond the ground
And I push you away, push you away
But you never seem to give up, you’d rather see me fall
You’d rather watch me crawl right on my knees

(Solo)

Chorus:
You keep dragging me down, dragging me down
Less than zero feet beyond the ground
And I push you away, push you away
But you never seem to give up, you’d rather see me fall
You’d rather watch me crawl right on my knees
On My Knees

3.) Insomniac (7:01)

Background:
Always being fascinated with genres outside his own, Troy usually fuses the alternative rock genre with others that he had always wanted to try, for example the bluesy touch in Underground City Blues and the very heavy metal Lock N Load. In one interview back in his Reckoner days, Troy was asked this question: If you were given a chance to record a song with anyone right now, who would that be and why? Troy answered the question with the very unsurprising answer, Jason Smith. The friendship between the two vocalists had been widely reported back in those days even though they had two very conflicting genres, Jason was part of the Metal Invasion while Troy was part of the Alternative Rock Movement. But this friendship wasn’t the reason for Troy’s answer, he explained that he had always been fascinated with the metal genre and had wanted to experiment on it. Insomniac is the product of that experimentation, an experimental metal song with dark and strong lyrics washed down with heavy but contained instrumentals.

Troy wrote:
“Insomniac is a song that reaches the borderline between art rock and progressive metal, it’s like a mix of early Mind and Infinite actually, a homage to two of the greatest bands ever. Insomniac, as the title suggests, is about not being able to sleep but you know you want to and you have tried so hard to. It’s trying to do something you know you should do, but there is some force acting against you, something stopping you from doing that, it starts from annoying and ends with disturbing. I believe that the heavy but controlled guitar riff is a very symbolic expression of the song’s contrasting themes, when you think of heavy metal, you know or you think chaotic, but my usage in this song is like trying to play Price To Pay on your wedding day, it’s like you want to erupt but you know you can’t. I couldn’t explain it all with my words, just give it a listen and you’ll know what I mean.”

Song Progression:
Intro (0:00-1:04)
The first few seconds of the song begins with total silence, making the listener anticipate for what is to come. Seconds later, a siren slowly increases in volume, as if it has come from a far place and is slowly making its way to you until it becomes really loud. The slow and very anthemic drum beat comes in as the siren continues to captivate the listener. The drum beat changes from slow and anthemic to fast and pulsating as the bass line enters, but it isn’t finished yet. The guitar feedback would later be heard as it makes its way to the song, a few moments later and the quick and riveting chord progression repeats itself for about two times, just before the verse comes in.

Verse (1:04-2:04)
The song changes pace from the very heavy intro to a more rhythmic section. The slap bass is very dominant right now and the drums have more flow then in the intro. Troy uses upstrokes on his guitar this time to emphasize on the rhythmic direction the song was headed for. About Troy’s voice, he sounds tired here since there is a lot of panting, typical Troy.

Chorus (2:04-3:28)
As expected, Troy would soar high in this chorus in terms of his vocal abilities, well that has been overused so this time he tried to be different. Troy sings in his normal range while another recording uses his falsetto voice, combine them together and it creates perfect harmony. The instruments all slow down from the very fast paced theme it has but sadly no synths to replace them, they all just slow down with the drums doing this epic sounding bass and snare combo, the bass being as slow yet as loud as possible and the guitar sounding as sexy as it can sound.

Solo I (3:28-4:01)
The first solo is more like an appetizer to the even heavier solo later on. This solo starts off with an acapella choir holding one high note as the bass and drums interject some melodies in, the guitar then comes in and plays a mildly slow solo with a very soulful twist, accompanied by the bass and drums with the choir.

Solo II (4:01-5:10)
Imagine a Reckoner track with two solos, both lasting for almost a minute each; Troy really has gone nuts with this solo project. So the second solo is even harder than the first one, going all metal here like a mix of early Mind and the early, stone age Reckoner sound. This part is where all the containment, all the resistance to keep the song as cool as ice breaks down, the song goes wild and chaotic in this one solo, and for the rest of the song.

Outro (5:10-7:01)
After that heart raising, ear pounding solo ends, the rest of the song is just the repetition of the song’s chorus along with different dynamics in every round of repetition. Enjoy singing along until it gets stuck in your head…FOREVER!

Lyrics:

(Intro)

Verse:
I’ve got a lot of things going on in my head, all these visions stuck and it’s pushing me, pushing me away
I never thought that it would be this hard, now my eyes burn as the hours pass by, as they pass by
I won’t get sleep tonight, my mind is just not up for it, no I won’t get sleep tonight
The sleeping pills wouldn’t work; I stare blankly at the wall
The sleeping pills just wouldn’t work; they couldn’t help me at all

Chorus:
I want to but I can’t
I need to but it won’t let me
So I just lie awake and let it all be
I won’t fight it any longer oh woe to me
I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat
I couldn’t help but notice
The insomniac in me, the insomniac in me

(Solos)

Outro:
I want to but I can’t
I need to but it won’t let me
So I just lie awake and let it all be
I won’t fight it any longer oh woe to me
I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat
I couldn’t help but notice
The insomniac in me, the insomniac in me (5x)
