Jason: I must say, this is shaping up to be one of the best albums that I have heard in a very, very long time. Already an early contender for album of the year. It was also absolutely fantastic working with you guys, and you genuinely deserve all the success you get.
OOC: Wow. Pretty much. Wow. It's really detailed, yet still entertaining to read. Phenomenal. |

3. A Dramatic Turn of Events Songwriter: Billie Beckett Producer: Vin Peters Length: 4:02
Music Overview The song is one of a few ballads on the album. It's a capella beginning evolves into having a chilling piano melody, acoustic guitar chords, and a harp by the second chorus. The true heart of this song is in the vocals. Billie Beckett sings with desperation and Yulia sings the second verse beautifully. At the breakdown some drums join in with cymbals every measure and violins play a dark melody as Yulia and Billie harmonize magnificently. Then Yulia, Billie, and Amy Meyer all harmonize together in an awe inspiringly beautiful manner. Then Billie shows off his range by hitting one of the biggest notes he has ever hit while electric guitars come in and the drums play a more major role in the bridge. The last chorus offers closure as Billie sings with just a piano. Vocals Billie opens the song a capella singing the sad melody with passion and desperation The powerful melodies continue as Billie sings the second chorus showing off his vocal range Yulia sings the second verse with a very beautiful tone with a tint of a frantic sound During the breakdown section Billie and Yulia harmonize in a way that is so magical and powerful as to make any singer wish they had made this song In the harmony section the true vocal beauty of the song comes out while Amy Meyer, Billie, and Yulia all sing at the same time in an awe inspiring display of melody and harmony During the bridge section Billie builds from a low whispery tone steadily up to an immense not at the end that solidifies that this song is a true vocal masterpiece before the final chorus Strings The piano joins playing a chilling melody as the chorus begins Right at the end of the chorus an acoustic guitar begins strumming chords A gentle harp plays in the background as Yulia sings the second verse All of the instruments play harmoniously through the second chorus All ceases for the breakdown except the piano which continues and a pair of violins and a cello that play a very dark dangerous sounding progression The acoustic guitar joins in again during the harmony while the piano and orchestral instruments continue A soft electric guitar joins playing chords in the bridge to make that part of the song stand out even more A more distorted guitar also plays, but it plays a calm harmonic pattern to not overpower the other instruments As the final chorus is sung by Billie everything ceases but the piano Percussion There is no percussion in the song until the breakdown In the breakdown Robert hits the cymbals on cue every measure to make this part of the song more powerful He plays a gentle beat throughout the harmony section During the bridge he picks things up a little bit to emphasize that it is the climax of the song with a louder but in no way overpowering drum beat One more cymbal crash as the bridge ends and then Robert's job for the song is done
Lyrics
Key Black - Billie Beckett Green - Yulia Purple - Billie and Yulia Red - Amy Meyer
[Verse 1] Cant take a stop off the freeway The world passes by Everyone hangs on what I say And I dont see why Maybe someday I'll buy an island Just slip away for awhile Lay in the wise wet ocean sand Watch the ocean cause a rile
[Chorus] I know, I know its not about me I know I have more responsibility I see I plead for stability But I know I have to always be The one who changes history
[Verse 2] All eyes go straight for you to save Anyone in any pain And all the time your critics rave Its true but you cant keep sane Someday if I fall you will catch me A true superman in action That's how I know your hype to be Not just a big overreaction
[Chorus 2] I know, I know its not about me I know I have more responsibility I see I plead for stability But I know I have to always be The one who changes history
[Breakdown] I could float away in that ocean Because all my memories of it seem tainted by the one who left me broken All the time my life is so dated
{Harmonies] No more reasons to fight! I will float in the ocean You can be the hero Please make no time for peace All my memories are tainted A true superman in action It's just an overreaction
[Bridge] And if I cant help it If I cant fight it Bury me deep dont mark my grave No mourning No singing No pain And if they try to honor me Make sure its somewhere no one can see Bury me deep dont mark my grave No flowers No crying No shame
[Chorus 3] I know, I know its not about me I know I have more responsibility I see I plead for stability But I know I have to always be The one who changes history
Commentary Matt: We have to have a ballad right?
Vin: This really is just an extension of some slower songs we've made before. It isn't anything really new or progressive for us except for the vocal melodies, but its one of the best ballads weve made to date and it's going to be a joy to play live.
KC: Just have to say this. Yulia and Amy Meyer are amazing at what they do!
Billie: This song is about having pressure on you. everyone knows about that. You just want to be left alone to what you are doing but you are expected to fill some sort of role. In the concept of the album it is more specific to Freedom. There are lots of references to the world in it and the peace reference that Amy sings works on the literal meaning of peace and the fact that peace is the name of the character that is supposed to be William's son. So basically it works on both levels with Freedom being denied peace and William being denied the chance to see his son. This song really means a lot to me, and I hope it translates. |

OOC: Basically took the week off which was great because I got to write some songs for myself, but now I'm behind schedule. =p I need more adjectives. Haha 4. Darkness I Songwriter: Billie Beckett, Vin Peters, Matt Collins Producer: Vin Peters Length: 6:18Music OverviewTHe song starts with just drums from Robert, but soon everything joins in with Matt playing an intense bassline, KC playing heavy powerful notes on guitar, and Vin playing atmospheric noise. KC and Billie both sing the verse with KC screaming it to create one of Reported Failure's heaviest songs. Billie sings with passion all the way through. In the very catchy chorus KC plays powerchords and Vin and Matt play a nice memorable lick. There is a incredible, and dynamic drum solo from Robert before the bridge where Billie sings more softly and the guitars are loud and heavy before the last chorus. hThe outro is just the instruments firing away for about 20 seconds. But the song is longer because Vin plays more random noise to transition to the end of the first part of the albumPercussionThe song starts with a steady drumroll that evolves into a strong dynamic hearpounding beat from Robert The intense heavy beat continues through the verse with a whole lot of double petal action and cymbal crashes Through the prechorus Robert just plays little taps on the cymbals joined by some bass drum action For the chorus Robert plays a syncronized peat with bass drum corresponding to Vin's guitar playing and a whole bunch of cymbal crashes along the way. The next verse prechorus and chorus are like the first ones. As the second chorus ends Robert pounds on the drums with lots of energy All the other instruments settle down for a period of thirty seconds while Robert goes into the first drum solo Reported Failure has ever had in a song This solo builds into a tiring beat as the other instruments join back in THe last chorus is played before Robert gets to go a bit insane again on the outro ending the song with a series of cymbal crashes and heart pounding bass drum action StringsDeep powerful notes are played by KC as the song begins before the verse During the verse Matt plays a powerful organ-vibrating bass line that is one of the musical highlights of the song KC continues the powerful heavy note playing as he screams the verse Vin plays strange atmospheric noise on his guitar by using the best distortion pedals that money can buy Vin's noise comes to an overpowering climax in the prechorus as he shreds away KC plays dominant power chords during the chorus while Vin plays a memorable lick rather high on the neck and Matt imitates Vin's guitar playing In the second verse Vin's guitar noise has a bit more structure to it relative to in the first verse, but it is still ver chaotic atmospheric guitar noise and tone After the second chorus all guitars and bass cease as Robert plays a drum solo Matt joins back in first with his bassline During the bridge KC plays an immense heavy metal riff while Vin plays an atmospheric tapping riff rather high on the neck Vin transitions everything back to the last chorus by having another section of dominant guitar noise which is joined by KC sliding his pick down the strings to go back to the powerchords while Vin plays his memorable lick and Matt copies it In the outro Vin shreds more which starts structured but falls back into random noise while Matt and KC play the verse After that Vin plays more atmospheric noise to kind of transition from the first part of the album to the next Vocals KC starts the song screaming deeply and slowly enough to be understood Billie quickly joins in aggressively belting out the verse at full volume KC and Billie alternate a little bit in the second half of the verse Billie sings the prechorus and it's nice vocal melody with passion and sensitivity The chorus is very passionately sung by Billie who shows off his range in the very catchy memorable heart of the song In the prechorus Billie sings more softly which is in contrast with the instruments around him, but he shows off the calmer side of his vocal range before going back to the last chorus
Lyrics Key Black - Billie Beckett Orange - KC James (Screamed)
[Verse 1] Fall Back down on my knees Give Me time to release Release me from this hellbound path Tell me who I really am Am I quite alive? When all my best tries They leave me stumbling, dying, crying So much to rely on, and so little time
[Prechorus] So little time to make it right I've lost my mind I have lost my sight So little hope in anyone I've lost my sister I have lost my son
[Chorus] I will fall on my knees in this darkness What is my name, where am I from? And I will crawl to the next road With all these fears and lost loves
[Verse 2] Give Into what you find When You examine your mind Give me a new chapter A chance to escape I've fallen and must crawl again Can't anything show me to the light Help me find my own face or my own life But darkness makes sense and life cant seem to fly
[Prechorus] So little time to make it right I've lost my mind I have lost my sight So little hope in anyone I've lost my sister I have lost my son
[Chorus] I will fall on my knees in this darkness What is my name, where am I from? And I will crawl to the next road With all these fears and lost loves
[Bridge] I know Not to go in alone I see No great epiphany This time When I find my way out I'll be fallen I'll be scarred A final battle Wont see me strong
[Chorus] I will fall on my knees in this darkness What is my name, where am I from? And I will crawl to the next road With all these fears and lost loves
Commentary Matt: This song is for the mosh pits (Laughs)
Vin: One of the heavier songs on this album. But it fits with the theme, and is a joy to play live.
KC: I take partial responsibility for this song. They had something going and I was like "Hey can I scream" and they all liked it
Robert: I'm a big fan of this song because I get to play a drum solo, but it's also quite a workout
Billie: This song is about the first point where William/Freedom really loses himself and becomes just the darkness. It is really foreshadowing what happens later in the album. So this song is about not really knowing what to do or who you are. It's a very long epic song.
Vin: At the end I just play more noise because this marks the end of the first act of the album and it needed to be marked somehow.[/size]Edited by user 23 January 2012 04:29:18(UTC)

OOC: Bold is all screwed up but I cant fix it right now. Ah well... Enjoy 5. A Pattern of Distress Songwriter: Billie Beckett, Vin Peters Producer: Vin Peters Length: 3:24
Music Overview The song starts with what seems to be a home recording of Billie speaking very poetically. Drums crash and the darkness chorus sings an epic melody as Matt plays the bass very powerfully. Billie sings in his signature tone as Vin plays the melody that was sung in the intro, Matt plays a nice bassline, and there is a unique clapping beat. In the chorus the loud guitar comes out and the drums as KC and Billie both sing loudly and Vin creates an atmospheric sound on guitar. the next verse and chorus continue just the same, but Vin does an intriguing tapping melody in the chorus. In the bridge the darkness chorus comes back and sings as Billie releases an immense scream. The last chorus closes the song with Billie ending it by singing random lyricless melody without any accompaniment from other instruments Percussion As the spoken word intro ends the drums crash and a simple bass drum beat begins The bass drum is joined by a loud clap This simple bass drum and clapping beat continues with occasional fills by Robert Robert smashes all the drums as he transitions into the chorus where he plays a steady, loud punk beat The next verse continues with the clapping but Robert expands his beat to a more full use of his drums instead of just the bass drum The next chorus mimics the first In the bridge things start with just the clapping; But the bass drum soon joins in and Robert does some insane fills before the final chorus Vocals Billie starts the song with spoken words; the recording quality is mediocre to seem as if Billie was just recording it as a sort of journal entry. He speaks very poetically. The Darkness Chorus joins in all singing the same lyrically nonsensical, but epic sounding melody; their voices are loud and dominant as the darkness chorus ceases Billie sings in the slightly desperate malicious tone that he is known for; his dark tone sings the melody with power and with vulnerability at the same time Billie sings the chorus in his fullest, loudest voice and he is joined by KC who changes things up and sings the song rather than screams it The next verses and chorus are sung in the same manner as the first In the bridge the darkness chorus comes back in and over them Billie unleashes a passionate scream that seems to transcend the time space fabric and shock the listener After the last chorus Billie sings more random notes unaccompanied by any other instruments Strings The bass is the first of the strings to join in; Matt starts powerfully playing root notes in the intro Vin joins in soon. His guitar is in overdrive but the volume is low so he subtly plays the melody that the darkness chorus is singing As the verse begins Matt plays a dominant bass line accompanied by Vin continuing the melody from the intro At the end of the verse the loud punk rock rhythm guitar from KC joins first with random tone and then power chords for the chorus As KC plays loud power chords Matt switches up the bass line, stepping from root note to root note as Vin creates an atmospheric tone with lots of bending, slides, and the occasional tapping lick KC lets chords ring as the verse begins with Matt's powerful bass line and Vin's addictive melody In the second chorus Vin's guitar playing evolves to an epic Van Halen tapping style melody Matt continues the powerful bass into the verse as Vin creates an atmosphere with a whole lot of tone, and bends The final chorus is the same as the second and after it ends Matt lets his bass ring as Vin creates random noise before the song ends
Lyrics Key Black - Billie Beckett Orange - KC James and Billie Beckett Blue - The Darkness Chorus
[Spoken Intro] Is it on? Ok good. The sun rises on this infamous day It is the tenth and one of the ninth month Ten years since this day was marked in blood But another disaster's moon rises And the father now joined by the sister They have met in a heaven far away Leaving life the never failing death trap
[Intro] Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh
[Verse 1] Everytime I speak I'm a liar For dust clouds all the truths Every word I speak sets a fire And FDNY never shall rest
[Verse 2] So lay my sister down in the coffin! Cover her in daddy's ashes Put her next to all the soldiers All the workers cops and firefighters
[Chorus] set fire to the ashes Let the marble char and crack Set fire to the photos If I can't be with the dead Then I don't want them living anymore
[Verse 3] Cars speed down the freeway They crush families and flags They drive and pollute everything Mind and love and hope and free
[Verse4] So lay my sister down in the coffin Cover her with a ripping flag Watch as a world cries And as a nation stares in shock
[Chorus] set fire to the ashes Let the marble char and crack Set fire to the photos If I can't be with the dead Then I don't want them living anymore
[Bridge] Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohay Ohayoh
[Chorus] set fire to the ashes Let the marble char and crack Set fire to the photos If I can't be with the dead Then I don't want them living anymore
Commentary Billie: Another really lyrically intense song about the death of my father on 9/11/01 and then the death of my sister in a car accident on the tenth anniversary of that. In the concept of the album this starts act two and it is really when everything which was bad goes to worse.
Vin: This is certainly the song that could easily have been on any of our other albums. It is much more punk than metal like some songs on this album and it is just guitars drums and bass.
KC: Most fans are used to me just screaming but I get to sing in this song which I suppose makes up for the fact that I only get to play guitar in the chorus
Matt: I really love the clapping bit. It was fun to record and ends up setting this song apart from other kind of simple melodic punk songs we've made in the past. Good song overall. Perfect start to act two of the album Edited by user 23 June 2012 03:01:59(UTC)

6. Neveah Songwriter: Billie Beckett Producer: Vin Peters, Jason Smith Length: 5:01
Music OverviewThe song starts out only with piano and warm synthesized root notes as Billie sings in a jazzy tone. Some bass, drums and beautiful vocal melodies from Billie and Amy Meyer build up to the break as the guitars come in and KC unleashes the screaming. the chorus is powerful, guitar driven, and catchy punk rock in which Billie and Amy both sing. The next breakdown is a heavy and chaotic section of the song. Bizarre synthesized noises of falling bombs and screams are joined by epic piano melodies, chaotic drums, and heavy guitars as Billie sings with aggression and KC screams. The next chorus is like the first but joined by the piano. As the final chorus ends just the piano, soft synth undertones, and Billie's jazzy echoing vocals remain in the closing verse of the song VocalsBillie begins singing the song in a very natural and a bit theatrical tone that goes well with the piano He continues this and then in the first breakdown a beautiful harmony between Billie and Amy Meyer is sung The melody changes shockingly as KC James comes in screaming as the noise picks up The catchy chorus is sung fully by Billie and then more strong melodies with Billie and Amy Meyer In the second breakdown KC powerfully screams as Billie sings quite aggressively and loudly The next chorus is sung with the same strength and melody as the first Things go back to more simplicity in the last verse as Billie sings again in a jazzy theatrical tone with lots of echo to close the songStringsThe song starts with a soothing melody on piano for about thirty seconds before the vocals come in It is just the piano throughout the first verse Bass from Matt joins the piano with powerful rootnotes building up to the end of the breakdown Vin comes in strong with a powerful, heavy lick right as KC begins the screaming Both Vin and KC play the same aggressive riff through the chorus making it memorable Matt supplies consistent rhythm on the bass As the next breakdown comes in Vin and Matt both play a skull-shattering heavy lick This lick is brilliantly complimented by a complex fast melody on piano The next chorus is the same as the first but with the melodic piano serving as an addition to the guitars and bass As the chorus ends the piano is left to play the song to a closeSynthThere is a warm synthesized undertone of root notes to compliment the piano in both of the verses In the second breakdown there is the odd sound that is a mix of falling bombs and screams PercussionThere is no drumming of any kind at first but at the start of the first breakdown Robert Edwards comes in strong with a beat that evolves into a powerful drumroll by the end of the breakdown As the chorus begins Robert plays a full throttle, punk rock beat joined by loud cymbal crashes every few beats This beat evolves further in the next breakdown to be a chaotic spasm of drumming which fits the synthesizer generated theme of chaos very well; Robert crashes the drums somewhat randomly but maintains the beat Robert switches back to the punk rock beat for the second chorus as his work in the song ends before the second verse
Lyrics Key Black - Billie Beckett Red - Amy Meyer and Billie Beckett Orange - KC James
[Verse 1] Do I have it in me? To stand back up again When Peace is never with me And life is full of sin Tyranny has stolen All that I believed Believed to be golden But to my dearly beloved
[Breakdown 1] How many nights Must I lie awake? Dreaming of a place Where the ships dont sink Tell me now!
[Chorus] I have seen hell Dear heavens its around the corner In our backwards world Reality finds no place like heaven
[Breakdown 2] I'm standing alone Where the night has fallen on the day Theres no home This deceitful heaven falls away
[Chorus] I have seen hell Dear heavens its around the corner In our backwards world Reality finds no place like heaven
[Verse 2] Is there something left? To conclude my comedy Or is their desolation To finish off my tragedy As I'm still standing As all the lights go out There's no more dancing No simple things just doubt
Commentary Vin: Having worked with Riot! in the Boulevard probably more than any other band out there I'm sure you've heard us gush about Amy and everyone in that band before, but were going to again.
Matt: They're great!
Billie: yeah. I love our relationship with that band. We just kind of all play on eachother's records. This is a great song and Amy is great in it
Robert: It's one of the stranger songs we have on this record. It rocks like a broadway musical in the beginning, then loud hardcore in the middle plus the production of my old friend Jason Smith.
Billie: The entire act two of this album, from A Pattern of Distress to Darkness II, is really about falling from any sort of stability and hope. The title is heaven spelled backwards which is to suggest a hell-like scenario. this is brought to life in the chorus. This song is really just part of documenting the fall of the protagonist before he must deal with that fall in the climax of the album.Edited by user 04 March 2012 07:48:01(UTC)
