The song is set to be released on April 29, 2012 as the follow-up to his 2011 debut single ‘I Just Want You Back’. It will be the second independent release from Benjamin Luna as he attempts to make a name for himself without a record deal and on his own terms. It also marks his first release under the guidance of producer/blogger/manager Layla Raine and the single was given an additional promotional opportunity as he performed the song live on the music box in early April to relative success. It was written in March 2012 by Benjamin Luna and Julian Morello and was recorded at the Hit Factory, New York City. SONG DESCRIPTIONA soft soulful piano introduction begins at the very start of the song, providing the platform for the songs lyrical themes and emotions. At around eleven seconds into the song the first line of the song can be heard by Benjamin as he sings with a rough almost worn down vocal which is in homage to the songs lyrical theme with the lines, “Oh, I’ve been pushed around with my face in the dirt/I’ve had my scars torn open to feel all this hurt/I’ve been laughed at and beaten with hands around my neck/Just holding it tighter until I lose my breath.” as the song progresses and the introduction of the guitar and the subsequent blues riff provided by Benji continues his vocal become more dominant as he sings about the pain that he’s willing to feel in the relationship and the song hits it highest part as he sings the chorus, “I’ll take the bruises for you and we’ll be alright/I’ll take the bruises for you every day and night/I’ll take the bruises for you because I’ve seen you at your best/I’ll take the bruises for you and all the rest.” And as Benjamin continues singing it would appear that he’s taken on the role of the soulful balladeer as he switches between loud powerful vocals and soft almost wistful vocals as he sings about the various things that he’s willing to take in order to make the relationship work well. SONGWRITERS COMMENTS“I’ve been writing a lot since the release of my debut single back in December 2011 but choosing a follow-up single was a difficult thing for me, I didn’t think that any of the previous material that I had worked on felt quite right as a single and so I began to work with a number of different songwriters in order to get some ideas together but nothing seemed to be working out, then with Layla becoming my manager and us putting ideas together she mentioned this guy that her friend works with called Julian and the fact that he’s looking to do songwriting and production work and so we met up in New York to see if we could perhaps work together and after talking about my ideas for the song and theme for the lyrics it seemed like he related to what I wanted the song to be about and his own previous relationship seemed to connect him with what I wanted the lyrics to put across. We took a couple of writing sessions and we had quickly created this song together. It was everything that I had hoped it would be and of course releasing something independently it’s important to be careful with what you choose to release, I don’t have the backing of a major record label so it’s important for me to make the right choices at this stage in my career, I’m fortunate to have a number of friends around me that are at the top of the business and are willing to support me as I attempt to find a label and make a more consistent career path in the industry and I owe a lot to them.”

BENJAMIN LUNA LIVE ON MUSIC BOX – APRIL 6, 2012 The announcement of Benjamin Luna is met with mild applause as he’s still a relatively unknown artist but as the lights turn the stage into entire blackness a soft blues guitar riff by Benji can be heard as the lone figure is stood centre stage, “You guys good tonight?” he asks with a smattering of applause “This is a love song” he laughs slightly before turning around and with his back to the audience he counts to his backing band before shouting, “Let’s do this” and with that signal the band begin to play with a drum beat and an even more powerful blues guitar riff that introduces the song;

I’ve been laughed at and beaten with hands around my neck
Just holding it tighter until I lose my breath
I’ve been stabbed in the back
I’ve been pushed to the floor

Oh, I’ve been left all alone in the pouring rain
I’ve felt the blood on my face and the pulse in my vein
I’ve seen the mercy of love in the cold light of day

Moving back and forth across the stage with the rest of his backing band, Benjamin has the crowd in full energy as he sings with powerful vocals and plays his guitar continually throughout, all the while moving to the edge of the stage to reach his hand out to the energetic crowd in the front rows during instrumental breaks in the song, before slowly making his back to the microphone at the centre of the stage to continue singing in his powerful bluesy vocals which provides the emotion that you’d expect from a love song of this nature;

I’ve been questioning all the things that we’re so used to taking
I’ve been confused and lost like a child in a flood
I’ve taken the pain, the scars and the blood
It’s been like this for so long

With the end of the song, Benjamin strikes the final chord on his guitar and ends the vocal performance with a high note that the crowd clearly enjoy as their cheers increase. He steps back from the microphone slightly and raises his hands in acknowledgement of the crowd, he takes a little bow before stepping up to the microphone, “Thank you, enjoy your evening”
