Band frontman Sam Fischer mugs for the cameras.

It's a typical rainy day in Toronto, Ontario, as we sit down in the basement of Jim and Anne Fischer. Their son, Sam, sits on a couch across from us. He has chosen his parents house as the best location to conduct this interview. Anne brings down cookies and milk, which we all enjoy. This seems quite unusual, especially since we're here to interview the vocalist for Acts of Hate, a local death metal band that is making their mark on the metal scene, being scheduled to play the Carnival of Sounds tour this coming July. But Sam isn't a scary metalhead guy. He's actually quite friendly.

Please note: Bold = our questions, Italics = Sam's responses.

So, you've got 2 EP's out, an opening spot on a semi-worldwide tour, what do you think is next?

Next? Shit, I don't want to think that far ahead. I'm already living my dream, man. 23, No record label, but me and my band have hundreds of fans here in Toronto and on top of that we've got the Carnival of Sounds tour to help us spread the disease. I couldn't ask for more.

You did mention you are unsigned, why do you think that is?

I don't think it's really important, to be honest. We scraped together enough dough to put out two EP's and we've already sold out all the CD copies of our first EP and our just yesterday we decided we were going to have to print more copies of our second one. I mean, we have people in different provinces ordering our EP off our website, we have people downloading our music, and the best part is, we did it ourselves. I'm proud. Any record label that would be willing to sign us...well, we see all these labels signing pop groups but we don't see alot of metal artists being signed. Maybe Chaos records or something like that, but there are no bare-bones, balls to the wall Metal record labels. If anything, we'd like to start our own label.

So, you have a sort of Do-It-Yourself kind of thing going on?

Well...that sounds sort of pretentious. I'm not a hipster or an anarchist or anything, but all I'm saying is that I don't need a record label to feel accomplished. But that's not to say I wouldn't want to be signed. I'd just want the record label to be the right one for us.

Understandable. Now the Carnival of Sounds tour, how excited are you for that?

I've got butterflies man. I can't even explain how grateful I am to be part of this. I really owe Floyd and the organizers a ton for letting our little local metal act on such a huge tour.

How did you come to be on the tour?

Well, I always like listening to what's going on in the music world and I heard about the tour and I was like "That sounds perfect." And I contacted the organizers, told them it would mean the world for me if we could get booked. And we did. The tour is really giving new acts some great chances.

Anybody you're especially excited to play with on the tour?

Oh definitely. I've talked to the guys from Erin's Silence and I have to say they're some of the coolest, most down to earth guys you'll ever meet. Hands down, I think we've got some friends on this tour. And I'm a fan of Reported Failure, too. Not really our type of music but you have to respect the guys, they're great musicians. I just hope we can do them justice as the opening act.

And lastly, any plans for a full length album?

Listen, even if we don't get signed, we have some ideas in the works. Our friend and former guitarist Raj, who produced our first EP and directed our video for Immolated is really looking to help us out. And this isn't going to be the old songs from our first 2 EP's lumped together with some studio polish on it. I think I'm in one of the most creative stages of my life and me and the rest of the band are trying to make something awesome. So the short version is, we want this album to be special, so it might take a while. *his mother calls from upstairs* Shit, dishes are done. I should go help with this. Thanks guys, I'll catch you later!

And thus ended our foray into the world of metal.

Vin: Having a DIY attitude is very respectable. And it can be done in this music industry. With downloading and everything if your songs are really good you dont need to be signed to some massive label to get your music out there.

Sam: There you have it! if Vin Peters says it, that's good enough for me. I just wish there were more labels to choose from, I've looked into it and not alot of them seem like they would work well with us.
