OOC: Not my best intro, but the heart of this EP is in the lyrics and none have been posted yet, so my excuse for doing mediocre RP is that the best part is yet to come. =p

Songwriting/Themes

The debut EP from Mount Olympus isn't a grand concept album that might be expected from the band started by two of the founding members of Reported Failure. The album is more simple than that. The songs are mostly a journey through the lives of the lyricists in the band, Wil Reasons, Danny O'Kurt, Vin Peters, but mostly Matt Collins. In 2011 it was revealed that Matt Collins had bi-polar disorder also known as manic depression. The EP gets it's title from this. Depression, violence, sex, romance, hatred, conflict. It's all covered in this EP. From the first song which is a hard hitting song that is one of only two that address Collins's manic depression directly, then the second song which is where the sexy part of the EP comes in, and then the third song is about Matt getting shot last September. after that comes the closest thing to a ballad on the EP which is about running away, then there is the loud single about a seductive woman, followed by another loud song addressing drama within the music scene, and then the final song which is again biographical to Matt. The only theme to the EP is the lives of the songwriters: the loud, sexy, manic lives of the songwriters.

Sound/Music
The title gives it away. The first word in the title of the debut EP from Mount Olympus is "Loud". The album starts out punk but not nearly as loud as it can get. Sure there are guitars and drums and riffage, but things dont really heat up until the end. Tracks 5-7 are intense. While before the guitar was centered around calm rock riffs things soon become metal. There is one calmer song on the EP though. "North Dakota" is a slow smoothly sung song. No guitars or drums seem to overpower the vocals which are the centerpiece. It is the ballad... or at least the closest thing to a ballad on this EP. Vocally Matt Collins and Wil Reasons carry the heavy loads singing the majority of most of the songs. Danny O'Kurt is next singing in most of the songs. He's also the main vocalist for "North Dakota". Mount Olympus does call themselves a "manband" in parody of what they call "pop bullshit boybands". In a boyband everyone manages to sing a little bit and the same is true for Mount Olympus. Although Wil, Matt, and Danny do most of the vocal work everyone fits in somewhere creating a dynamic vocal sound.

1. I Feel Like Stephen Hawking
The first song from Mount Olympus's debut EP is "I Feel Like Stephen Hawking". It is the ideal intro song. It is fast and sets the mood for what is to come later. "This is a really great song. It's probably going to be our next single" says singer Wil Reasons. The song is sure an ideal single with it's catchy chorus and addictive prechorus. It isn't too heavy either. There are no heavy breakdowns, just a guitar solo in the outro.

Lyrically, as mentioned it's one of the songs that addresses Matt Collins's bi-polar disorder directly. "Obviously its about me with all of my problems" says Collins. "I've always been inspired by people with disabilities whether mental or physical who manage to make something out of themselves. This song is kind of me slapping myself on the wrist and saying 'hey you! Quit moping you are in a successful band, have a wonderful girlfriend, and a house on the beach so quit being such a bitch.' Haha. Yeah that's basically what this song is." Though Matt Collins wrote most of the song a lyrics credit is also given to Danny O'Kurt who helped write (and sing) the breakdown.

The song starts out with a smooth mildly distorted guitar riff kickstarting everything. A flanging synth backs the guitar riff as a simple drumbeat builds the spine of the song. Matt sings the first verse cleanly pleading for help. A synthesized clap beat joins the drums. Matt soon also plays bass applying the heartbeat of the song. Vin Peters plays lead guitar that sets the atmosphere for the song high on the neck in a clean tone during the second verse. Then in the prechorus Vin switches to a flanging appregio riff as Hugh Keeley still plays the main consistent riff from the beginning of the song. Derrick Goddard plays a hi-hat beat like a smooth pitter-patter of a hand splashing on water. Meanwhile Matt sings the prechorus calmly but seriously like it is a confession. Sweet chords apply the backdrop to the chorus as Matt Collins and Wil Reasons alternate their vocals. The synth beat makes the chorus memorable as Vin plays a high treble appregio style riff. The next verse comes after a short break making it as powerful as when the song first started. Matt still sings as he plays a simple bassline. The next prechoruses switches up the melodies just like the first one did. Then the heart of the song, the catchy chorus, comes again. But then things change. Vin plays a seductive flanging guitar riff as Danny O'Kurt starts to sing. His tone is much softer than Matt or Wil so the breakdown becomes the most memorable part of the song. Matt picks things up with bass as Wil helps sing the breakdown. Then all ceases but Vin playing chords as Matt starts to sing. The noise evolves. First just with chords and Matt singing, then bass joins, drums and synth, and then the other guitar as the song evolves to the final chorus. After this Matt yells nonsense as Vin starts to pick things up on guitar. He plays a mellow guitar solo feeling out the penatonic scale. The song ends with guitar tone and drums fading into silence.

Lyrics
Black - Matt Collins
Red - Wil Reasons
Blue - Danny O'Kurt
[Verse 1]
Carry me. I'm a mess
Pull my brain out of my chest
You'll shock my heart
Its doom and gloom and hate from the start

[Verse 2]
Check on me. I'm changing now
Pull the plug pour the pills now
I'm terrorized
Now its doom and gloom and its not a surprise

[Prechorus]
and today I feel like Stephen Hawking
I can do anything but I'm not walking
I could be the greatest physicist
Or a loud manic boy with slits in my wrist

[Chorus]
I'll never be alone
My heart is not my home
I'm finally starting to see
That the drugs inside are me
Yeah I'm always in the company
Of my mental diversity
And I'm finally starting to see
That the shocks inside are me

[Verse 3]
Bury me. Dust my head
Or paint it white or black instead
So then I'll never cry
But its doom and gloom and only I know why

[Prechorus 2]
So today I feel like Helen Keller
I can think for my love but I can never tell her
I could be a progressive activist
Or a loud manic boy with slits in my wrist

[Chorus]
I'll never be alone
My heart is not my home
I'm finally starting to see
That the drugs inside are me
Yeah I'm always in the company
Of my mental diversity
And I'm finally starting to see
That the shocks inside are me

[Breakdown]
Wheel me in
It's the nuthouse again
Let me scream
And spill my blood again
This is the end of love
Because I've had enough

This is the end of love
Because I've had enough

[chorus]
I'll never be alone
My heart is not my home
I'm finally starting to see
That the drugs inside are me
I'll never be alone
My heart is not my home
I'm finally starting to see
That the drugs inside are me

[Chorus]
I'll never be alone
My heart is not my home
I'm finally starting to see
That the drugs inside are me
Yeah I'm always in the company
Of my mental diversity
And I'm finally starting to see
That the shocks inside are me
