Review:Goth Rock juggernaut,
The Vigils return with a surprisingly un-Goth album. The dark themes are certainly there but the actual music has more of just a straight forward Rock sound ala
The Cult or
Danzig. A much heavier sound opens the album as
"Angel Food" chugs along at a Post-Grunge pace complete with ominous tribal chanting. A more familiar Post-Punk style is found on the creepy, almost spoken word
"Peeling Skin" but then the band once again goes into new territory with the frantic,
"Carry On Screaming" that sounds like a Pop-Rock song twisted and distorted into something sinister. The same can be said for
"White Man Beware" that takes a Bluesy number and transforms it with backmasked loops of guitar, organ, and drums combined with eerie chanted vocals.
"Nobody Likes a Sycophant" starts out slow with
Frankenstein's vocals at their weirdest and morphs into an over-the-top symphonic ballad.
Halfway through, the tone is changed yet again with the raw, dirty, sludgy
"Savage Land" that sounds like Satanic Southern Rock and then a standard Gothic Rock track, the
Pet Sematary based
"Sometimes Dead is Better". Next is the 90's inspired,
"Who Died and Made You Eddie Vedder? which despite it's tounge-in-cheek Grunge anthem style is actually one of the best tracks here. An odd cover of
Train's
"Meet Virginia" follows and that probably could have been left off but it's the only real low point. The record closes with the atmospheric, tribal sing-a-long
"Where Dreams Die Hard". All in all,
The Depression Sessions is certainly not a traditional
Vigils album and that may turn some of their fans off but the product is solid and right up their with the rest of their catalog.
