What's you're favourite opening to a song? I think a good opening can make a good song into an amazing one personally love a fat old riff or a melody that just makes you think aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool Drool

The shouting at the start of this is just fucking awesome.

Ahhh, that chug of the guitar is one of my favourite sounds in excistance.

Always loved the intro in this, despite hating the rest of the song.

I find this with soo many heavy songs. They always have really nice little melodies or riffs and then they just go into a generic metal spasm soo frustrating.

All Along The Watchtower is a good shout & on a Hendrix kick I'd also say the start to Voodoo Child (Slight Return) is great too.

This next one is something I accept most others won't dig but the feedback + Mike Williams screams does it for me. And then a nice wee bass line & more feedback, & then the song

And staying with metal for a bit, because I'm falling back in love with it, Metallica - Harvester of Sorrow as a real neat intro

It's actually harder thinking of great intros than I realised. But the Stones best song has a pretty rad intro

The opening to Patti Smith's cover of Them's Gloria is pretty great too. "Jesus died for somebodies sins, but not mine" with as fine a punk sneer as I've ever heard.

Quite like the intro to Fuck Tha Police, it's amusing, the idea of NWA as judges & prosecutors.

You're all wrong, it is this:

Or also acceptable, the best opening to any song ever recorded by anyone in, or ever associated in any way with The Beach Boys:

Forgot this gem. Any fans of Dazed and Confused will be familiar. The first minute is brilliant.

To avoid cluttering the thread with more video links (don't think I'm the only one who loads slow on these types of threads), I'll just name a few and why.

Gauntlet Hair - Keep Time

I like the feedback a bunch. The entirety of the first 30 seconds is just lightly distorted goodness.

Heems - Bangles f/Big Baby Gandhi & Fat Tony

I have a feeling I would like the original but I like rap songs when the samples start with soulful singing, gets me in the right mood.

Memory Tapes - Wait in the Dark

I just like the general progression.

Grizzly Bear - Sleeping Ute

Classic.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti - Round and Round

Another good one I just remembered:

Swans - Time is Money (Bastard)
Crazy machine-gun drums for about 15 seconds, then morphing into a cacophonous beat featuring an actual nail gun. And the opening lines of course, "Your body is private. Your mind is sacred. You should be violated... You should be violated... You should be raped... You should be raped..."

The whole song is pretty much just drums and vocals.

Another classy opener. If you were ever bored with how long it takes The Mars Volta to get to the meat of the song, this is all meat.

I started my Animal Collective binge like a month ago, went through around 3 of their albums, and Strawberry Jam remains the second best album of their's for me. (Feels is close to a perfect album) I really like the opening to this song though.
