Title: Crossroads
Release Date: 18, November 2012
Recorded: August – October 2012, Avatar Studios, New York City, NY
Genres: Alternative Rock, Pop-Rock, Rock, Pop-Punk
Label: North Hill Records!
Producers: Isaac Lovelock, Riot! In The Boulevard

‘Crossroads’ is the third studio album from the teenage American rock group, Riot! In The Boulevard and fourth overall album during their first three years of becoming professional musicians and making their rise within the music industry as one of the prominent rock acts. Unlike previous albums that were recorded in Los Angeles, this album was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City, New York and it was produced by Riot! In The Boulevard and Isaac Lovelock between August to November 2012. It’s been noted that the album follows a similar dark-oriented lyrical style to that of the material from their sophomore album ‘Cradle To The Grave’. It is the highly anticipated follow-up to the diamond certified ‘Cradle To The Grave’ released in February 2012 and follows hot on the heels of their platinum selling first ever live album ‘From Field Trip Festival 2012’ released at the end of September 2012 and recently becoming their third #1 album.

The album will feature an eleven song selection of brand new music with varying different styles which also includes the recently succesfull number #1 charting single, ‘Somewhere On The Horizon’. According to rhythm guitarist 'Adam Benjamin' the album’s title is in reference to the fact that the band are now at the crossroads between youth and growing up and a lot of the material mirrors that element. The album is set for release worldwide on 18, November 2012 and will be distributed by ‘North Hill Records’

Album Background

Ever since their breakthrough into the industry in early 2011, Riot! In The Boulevard have worked almost non-stop with release after release and tour after tour in order to find their spot within the ever-evolving music industry and this latest release is no different. Following the testing recording sessions for their sophomore album and the release of ‘Cradle To The Grave’ at the beginning of the year, the band embarked upon a world tour in support of fellow rocker and friend ‘Lily Abbott’ that stretched from February through to June, a brief two week break followed before the band re-convened in New York City to begin planning what was next on their horizon, it was certainly going to be a busy second half of the year to match that of the first half. They agreed on putting out their first live album, which became their third #1 album and another one million-plus seller, a surprising outcome when you consider the fact that the CD/DVD release contained no new material but instead the opportunity to see what a Riot! concert is truly all about.
They then all agreed that they’d like to work on a third studio album but on the advice of friends and family they took a vacation throughout the majority of July, although the term vacation should be used loosely as they spent a lot of that time planning for their future, Amy decided to make the permanent move from Las Vegas to Greenwich Village, New York along with Adam Benjamin, while Justin, Nathan and Jason opted to remain in Las Vegas at least for the short term future. Amy and Adam had just about settled into their new homes in New York City when the band entered Avatar Studios in August, it was the beginning of a three month reality embargo for the band as they spent almost every day inside the studio, firstly to produce the ‘Live From Field Trip 2012’ album which took close to a month to finish and then to dive head first into the writing and recording of their third studio album ‘Crossroads’.

Speaking about the recording of the album Amy Meyer had this to say, “It can be difficult to find new ground when you’ve covered so much of it in such a short space of time. But we keep wanting to put out new things for our fans and develop as a band. At some point we will have to take a long break from the routine of writing, recording, touring, writing, recording, touring. It can be difficult, but the surprising thing with the recording of this album in comparison to the recording of our last album is the fact that we haven’t really fallen out once, at least not dramatically like during the sessions of the previous album. It was a very hardworking and understanding sort of environment to be in during this album and that probably surprised me the most, perhaps we’re growing. I say perhaps, I think when you listen to some of the songs it’s quite clear that we’re growing, growth is pretty much the main theme of the album in my opinion, it’s very much a coming-of-age type of album.”, this is of course in reference to the fact that the band almost came to an end prior to the completion of ‘Cradle To The Grave’.
Justin Mullen shed light on the differences between then and now, “We’re all pulling in the same direction right now, we all want pretty much the same thing, we see our favourite bands with a back catalogue that spans years and years, decades even and that’s what we want to be. Too many times have we fallen in love with a new exciting band that was gonna change the face of music forever to just be disappointed when they didn’t even get to their second record. We want to be a band that is still standing in thirty or forty years or more. I’m not saying it’s going to happen but that’s where we’re aiming towards. I’ll admit that myself and Amy may have been the main problem and source of friction in the past in regards to where we should go and what we should do as a band but now feels like a huge calmness and understanding. The band appear to be becoming closer more and more, I don’t think it’s a bond that can be broken easily.”

The album features eleven songs and follows in a similar lyrical and musical theme to their previous studio album, although there is more emphasis lyrically on growing older and the ‘Coming-of-age’ situation that each member of the band finds themselves in. The album features vocal appearances from James Urie and Isaac Lovelock, the latter co-produced the album alongside the band.

Title: Somewhere On The Horizon
Genres: Alternative Rock, Pop-Rock
Length: 4:27
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: August 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer, Adam Benjamin

Background & Song Description

‘Somewhere On The Horizon’ is a song by the American alt-rock band ‘Riot! In The Boulevard’, it’s the lead single from their upcoming third studio album and marks their eighth official single overall during their almost three years in the music industry. The track was written in August 2012 by Amy Meyer and Adam Benjamin prior to the initial recording sessions for their next album, it mixes elements from their previous two studio album’s worth of material and continues with their signature sound, heavy guitar riffs with lyrics that will no doubt continue to speak to their primarily teenage audience as well as the melodic simplicity that they’ve shown in previous songs of a tender and emotional nature.

It’s their first single to be released under ‘North Hill Records’ and their first single that features production work from ‘Isaac Lovelock’ who the band signed on to co-produce their latest studio effort. This will be the first single to be released as part of the build-up to their third studio album, with little information about that record available it would appear that its release is certainly on the horizon, with some insiders hinting towards an early November release date. ‘Somewhere On The Horizon’ will be released to airplay and available to purchase as a digital download and CD single on October 14, 2012.

During July and early August 2012, Riot! In The Boulevard took a four week break in order to re-cooperate from a long and arduous tour that culminated in a headline performance at Field Trip Festival 2012. Each band member went their separate ways during this vacation, lead guitarist Justin took a week-long vacation in Italy before spending the following three weeks back at home in Vegas with family and friends, drummer, Nathan and the twin brother of Justin opted to stay at home in Vegas during the four week break with his girlfriend, while bassist Jason Greenberg decided to spend some of his downtime in Tokyo, Japan which is a place that he has always been extremely fond of and finally both Amy and Adam decided to spend their downtime together, taking residency in a small home in Greenwich Village, New York.
It was during Amy and Adam’s downtime that they wrote ‘Somewhere On The Horizon’ together as a bunch of other songs considered for their upcoming album, it was this track however that they became more happy with, as Amy states, “It’s always difficult to keep writing something that feels at least slightly different, after two album’s worth of material it’s gonna be more and more difficult to write songs that feel different.”, but as Amy started off by messing around with certain keys and melody’s on the piano, despite both members of the band agreeing that they wouldn’t work during their downtime, it wasn’t long before she had tempted Adam to come up with a riff on the guitar, this quickly resulted in the two writing the music and putting lyrics to that music in a sort of collaborative session that lasted over four hours. Adam shed a light hearted response during a recent interview, “So much for a vacation, right?”

The track opens up with a melodically beautiful piano introduction and soft beating of the drums, which sets the tone of the song and it’s general theme perfectly as Amy’s opening lines introduces the listener to the story that is to come, “We live such different lives/It’s like everything keeps changing/We used to talk all night/Now it seems like we’re just fading.” already giving a clear indication that the song is a haunting ballad for a dying love, Amy’s gentle but assertive vocals show that she hasn’t lost anything and with the slight echo on her vocals it gives the song it’s haunting emotional impact, feeling like yet another confessional from the red-haired teenagers diary. The song’s chorus appears rather quickly into the song as Amy’s vocals become more assertive and urgent as she sings this time with a soft and slow guitar and bass backing by Adam and Jason, she fires out the lines, “Maybe not right now, maybe not today/Maybe when we least expect it, our love will die away/Maybe not here, but no matter how we try/Somewhere on the horizon, we will say goodbye.” again as she’s done in many previous songs she initially puts the emphasis on the melody and emotion of her songs.

But as the next couple of verses falls by, it’s a blistering lead guitar riff provided by Justin Mullen that gives the song it’s highest and most anthemic moment, filled with a dramatic urgency and a beautiful vocal delivery from Amy once more as she sings on level with the power of the guitar riff, “It’s hard to see the light/Right now it’s way too dark/It’s hard to know that things will be alright/There’s still a flickering in my heart/Just believe in the words that I say to be true/Darlin’ I still hold a candle for you.”
The guitar riffs soften in power slightly and the keys of the piano become more highlighted as the song comes towards its final stages, the song reverts back to the emotional and melodic state once again and the tender vocals of Amy close out the song to the echo of the plastic veneer piano keys.

Lyrics

“We live such different lives
It’s like everything keeps changing
We used to talk all night
Now it seems like we’re just fading
We’re going through the motions
Fighting just to see who’ll be the first to blink
We can both see the truth
Our ship is gonna sink

Maybe not right now
Maybe not today
Maybe when we least expect it
Our love will die away
Maybe not here
But no matter how we try
Somewhere on the horizon
We will say goodbye

It’s been a long time coming
It’s been such a long time together
It’s hard to let go when we said this was forever
But I can’t see the light that shines
I can’t feel the ties that bind
I can’t be the one to fall behind
Maybe it will get easier in time

Kiss a rose and throw it in the sea
Just pray that the rose will find its way to me
We’re both young with a lot to learn
A heart beats heavier when it’s forced to yearn
Maybe we were stupid for getting into this
I sometimes wish I never met you
Because it’s only you that I can miss

It’s hard to see the light
Right now it’s just way too dark
It’s hard to know that things will be alright
There’s still a flickering in my heart
Just believe in the words that I say to be true
Darlin’ I still hold a candle for you

We’re always going through the motions
Fighting just to see who’ll be the first to blink
We can both see the truth
Our ship is gonna sink
Maybe not right now
Maybe not today
Maybe when we least expect it
Our love will die away
Maybe not here
But no matter how we try

Somewhere on the horizon
We will say goodbye
Somewhere on the horizon
We will say goodbye”

Title: A Place Called Home (The Leaving Song)
Genres: Alternative Rock, Pop-Rock
Length: 4:38
Label: North Hill Records
Written: August 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer

Background & Song Description

‘A Place Called Home (The Leaving Song)’ is a song from the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. As one of the first songs written for their third studio album ‘Crossroads’ it gave an early indication of the direction in which their latest album was likely to move in, as each member of the band are coming towards the end of the their teenage years, they will all arrive at the age of twenty next year with the exception of rhythm guitarist Adam Benjamin, and this early track indicates feelings and emotions of growing older and the temptation of leaving town once and for all.

The song’s lyrics were written by Amy Meyer during her stay at a hotel in Greenwich Village, New York in early August just a couple of days before the band were due to re-convene at a nearby recording studio, she had been emailed a soft melodic guitar track by Justin Mullen who had encouraged her to listen to it and attempt to put some words to the music, according to Amy, “I listened to that MP3 over and over again in an attempt to get something out of it but the words just wouldn’t come to me for whatever reason and it was a phone call from my mother a little later in the evening that was the catalyst for the song.
It wasn’t anything deep and moving but just my mom, talking about what had been happening in the past month back at home and it just hit me. My hometown is exactly that, it’s completely what it is meant to be, it’s familiar and safe and warm and there’s times when all I want to do is leave the place and then there’s other times when it couldn’t feel more beautiful because it’s filled with good memories and love and comfort and the song quickly wrote itself after that.”

An opening electric guitar riff filled with a tender melody introduces the song in a soft and wistful manner as the drum, bass and rhythm section of the band accentuate the introductory guitar playing and provide a strong backing for the main instrument throughout the song, it provides an emotional backdrop but with a slight powerful element provided by Justin’s guitar playing and as Amy bellows out the opening lines to the song in that familiar vocal, “Staring down the barrel of familiarity/My hometown hasn’t changed at all throughout the years/It’s just the same reminder of who I will always be/I always thought I’d leave this place, spread my wings and learn to fly/I always thought I’d find the courage/But these days I just can’t seem to find a reason why.” it’s clear that this is a quintessential Riot! In The Boulevard track, even from just the opening verse it has the stamp of the young rock group.

The music progresses steadily throughout at is it reaches the pre-chorus and chorus, the electric guitar providing the strong energy to the song now accompanied by the powerful drum beats provided by Nathan Mullen, the rhythm and bass elements are slightly noticeable too as they continue to provide the backing to the leading guitar riff and Amy once again opens her lungs and thunders out the lyrics with her trademark energetic nature, “I’m leaving town/Packing my bags and heading out/I don’t know when I’ll return/But I promise that I will someday/If I don’t do this now, I’ll never do it anyway.” and her vocals slow down and become more tender as she sings, “But I stop myself/Maybe I’m too afraid/I’m just not destined to leave/Perhaps this is my hometown for a reason/And it’s safe and it’s familiar/Maybe I’m just not destined to roam/I’ll stick to this place/This place that I call home.”

And as the song comes towards its closing stages the music all but fades during the final verse to the point where Amy is almost singing acapella, it’s a slow and moving vocal during the final verse that includes a poignant nod backwards to the direction of their debut album as Amy name checks their first three singles, the tracks that got them to where they are today, sang beautifully like as if it’s an ode to the person that she can’t fully remember anymore as she sings, “But it’s now so plain to see/Those sweet little fantasies no longer run away with me/While all the non-believers are just the same/And those long distance conversations still remain.”

Lyrics

“Staring down the barrel of familiarity
My hometown hasn’t changed at all throughout the years
It’s just the same reminder of who I will always be
I always thought I’d leave this place, spread my wings and learn to fly
I always thought I’d find the courage
But these days I just can’t seem to find a reason why

All those familiar things are comfortable and safe
It’s a part of life that I’ve always known
And although I always say that I’m gonna leave someday
That familiarity stops me from going

I sleep in the same room that I did as a child
I sleep in the same bed that I had as a teenager
I stare at the walls that have surrounded me for many years
And I realize that I’m comfortable
I know that I’ll never leave
No matter how many times I dream
They’ll never really become reality

I’m leaving town
Packing my bags and heading out
I don’t know when I’ll return
But I promise that I will someday
If I don’t do this now
I’ll never do it anyway

But I stop myself
Maybe I’m too afraid
I’m just not destined to leave
Perhaps this is my hometown for a reason
And it’s safe and familiar
Maybe I’m just not destined to roam
I’ll stick to this place
This place that I call home

I’ll sit in my room with a notebook and pen
I’ll write down my dreams and just let them fade away again
My friends will be out there, exploring the great wide open
I’ll never truly give up my dreams
I’ll never stop hoping

But it’s now so plain to see
Those sweet little fantasies no longer run away with me
While all the non-believers are just the same
And those long distance conversations still remain”

Amy: Thanks Matt I appreciate that! it was completely unintentional, who knew we’d grow up? But it became pretty clear that this is an album about growing older in a way. Anyhow, I’m glad that you’re liking the look of the album so far, thank you! :)

Title: The Ruins You Created And The Hearts That You Took
Genres: Alternative Rock, Rock, Emo
Length: 6:13
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: October 2012
Writer(s): Adam Benjamin

Background & Song Description

‘The Ruins You Created And The Hearts That You Took’ is a song from the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. Written in early October 2012 by Adam Benjamin it was written late at night following a long and tiring day of recording, the band had tracked almost half of the songs from their upcoming record throughout the day and came to the agreement that the record needed another two or three songs, lead singer Amy Meyer had a large involvement in most of the songwriting duties but encouraged Adam to try to write one or two songs for inclusion on the album, staying at a hotel in Greenwich Village, New York he wrote two songs that would eventually appear on the album in one evening, this track and a track titled, ‘The Fire That Took My Love (Last Day Of Our Acquaintance)’.

The song was written with just an acoustic guitar within the space of three hours, according to Adam, the song nearly got thrown away, “It was around eleven thirty in the evening when I finally got back to the hotel after spending the entire day in the recording studio in downtown Manhattan and so the thought of trying to come up with a couple of songs was something that didn’t thrill me. I grabbed a bite to eat and then began to play an acoustic guitar, this is just after midnight but nevertheless I kept at it and began to just think about what I could write about, I quickly came up with a melody and then an introduction and began the process of putting lyrics to it which is something that I find difficult.
I’ve always enjoyed songwriting, I don’t do it a whole lot to be honest because I can’t get those short punchy songs that our band has become known for, usually when I write a song it goes on a little longer than the band would ideally like. I’ve always been encouraged by the band to bring my own songs to the table but like I say, it’s usually a little too long and gets dismissed but it’s the only way I can write songs, I can’t quite say what it is that I want to say in the three or four minutes and so they usually do go up into the six and seven minute mark, which is what happened in this case too but the guys enjoyed both songs that I wrote on my own that evening and included them into the album.”

The song begins with a slow and melancholic piano introduction, the sound of the keys being pressed down and the addition of the haunting echo that backdrops the eerie tones of Amy’s piano playing gave the song a dreary but powerful introduction, it remains as the sole instrument throughout the entirety of the first verse as Amy sings with anger and a twinge of regret in her vocal delivery of lyrics that match the dulcet tones of the piano playing, “The constant beating of my heart rumbles through these halls/While the ghost that left me is buried in the walls/The crackling thunder can be heard from way above/It keeps on haunting this home that was once filled with love/If you listen quietly you can still hear my voice/When you’re alone you don’t really have a choice/No matter where you go and no matter what you do/I’ll be somewhere deep within the darkness/I’ll be right there/Haunting you.”

As the second verse begins in a similar vein, with the piano and vocal delivery remaining as the primary focus the powerful repetitive drum beat by Nathan Mullen begins in order to add an urgency to the song and the pace of the music picks up slightly with the inclusion of the Rhythm and Bass Guitars from both Adam Benjamin and Jason Greenberg respectively that give the song an added fire and emphasis that isn’t quite fully realized until the gigantic and anthemic rock onslaught that hits your ears during the pre-chorus as a blistering lead guitar solo is backed perfectly and powerfully by all of the aforementioned instrumentals as well as Amy’s vocals that have now turned from soft and regretful into a huge anthemic rock vocal that sits perfectly in-between the incessant instrumental backdrop as she sings, almost bellows out the following; “I’m long gone now/I’m buried underground/No pain and hurting for me/But just remember that you’re easily found/I still have a spirit and I haven’t forgotten/So don’t get too comfortable/Because although my soul is rotting/I’ll be there, I’ll see you again/My revenge will come, but until then/Just remember the face that deep down you still miss/But most importantly/Remember this.”

The combination of the aforementioned instrumentals, combined with Amy’s vocals continue just as incessantly as previously while the song progresses throughout with the energy and power that a Riot! In The Boulevard live performance has become known for since their breakthrough into the industry, the instrumental onslaught only begins to settle down slightly for the final vocal delivery of the song as she sings, “The ruins you created and the hearts that you took/Will come to the foundations/Your whole world will soon be shook/The heart that you had stolen and the faith and love too/Won’t be forgotten/My ghost will be coming for you.” and the song fades briefly before moving into the next track.

Lyrics

“The constant beating of my heart rumbles through these halls
While the ghost that left me is buried in the walls
The crackling thunder can be heard from way above
It keeps on haunting this home that was once filled with love
If you listen quietly you can still hear my voice
When you’re alone you don’t really have a choice
No matter where you go and no matter what you do
I’ll be somewhere deep within the darkness
I’ll be right there
Haunting you

I was just a carefree soul
Just needed someone to be there to break my fall
But you lured me in, made me feel like you were the one
As soon as our hearts became too close together
I looked around and you were gone
Breaking a heart in the process
But I know that your life without me is just a big mess
But I digress

I’m long gone now
My body is buried underground
No pain and hurting for me
But just remember that you’re easily found
I still have a spirit and I haven’t forgotten
So don’t get too comfortable
Because although my soul is rotting
I’ll be there, I’ll see you again
My revenge will come, but until then
Just remember the face that deep down you still miss
But most importantly
Remember this

The ruins you created and the hearts that you took
Will come to the foundations
Your whole world will soon be shook
The heart that you had stolen and the faith and love too
Won’t be forgotten
My ghost will be coming for you

You’ll be beaten, bruised
Shaken and scared
You’ll be overwhelmed
And you’ll be underprepared
Every little thing that you threw at me
Will be coming back to you
Every little thing you do
Just know that I’ll be haunting you

I’m long gone now
My body is buried underground
No pain and hurting for me
But just remember that you’re easily found
I still have a spirit and I haven’t forgotten
So don’t get too comfortable
Because although my soul is rotting
I’ll be there, I’ll see you again
My revenge will come, but until then
Just remember the face that deep down you still miss
But most importantly
Remember this

The ruins you created and the hearts that you took
Will come to the foundations
Your whole world will soon be shook
The heart that you had stolen and the faith and love too
Won’t be forgotten
My ghost will be coming for you”

Nadia: You guys have come so far in such a short space of time, it's pretty amazing just thinking about it. From what I've heard so far, this is shaping up to be your best album so far, I'm immensely proud of you all! It's been a great year for music, so it's hard to say at this point, but this could very well be one of the albums of the year.

Amy: Wow thank you Nadia, or would you rather us call you boss? :P haha, anyway that really means a lot to us and that's very sweet of you to say! I think there's been a whole lot of incredible music out this year that has been better than ours but thank you very much for the kind words, it's always nice to hear! :)

Title: Our Long Distance Hell (feat. James Urie)
Genres: Alternative Rock, Pop-Rock
Length: 4:57
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: July 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer, Justin Mullen

Background & Song Description

‘Our Long Distance Hell (feat. James Urie)’ is a song from the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard and solo rock musician James Urie. It was written back in July 2012 by both Amy Meyer and lead guitarist Justin Mullen with the view to having James Urie feature on the track. It was the very first song written for the album although it was initially just planned as a one-off single to be recorded and released by Amy and James rather than an entire group track, it was quickly changed in order to accommodate the rest of the band as they thought that it’s theme and style was rather ideal as a Riot! In The Boulevard track. It was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City around September and has been already speculated as a potential future single for the alternative rock band.

The decision to write a song that would feature a male vocalist alongside Amy’s own vocals isn’t something that was really considered, as Amy stated in a recent interview, “We weren’t looking to do that initially because there isn’t really a lot of great solo male rock vocalists in the industry right now, I think James is pretty much the only one that comes to mind that would actually fit in with the band so it’s not like we thought, ‘Oh, let’s write a couple of verses for that particular type of singer and then make a list of who we could choose to record on the track’, so it didn’t really happen like that.”
But it was a chance meeting with James Urie that threw the possibility of him featuring on a Riot! In The Boulevard track, as Amy went on to mention, “I have been a big fan of his music for a while, we were both signed to Nomad Records and then moved to North Hill and so I’ve always been aware of him and quite a big fan of his music, I think he’s on his own in terms of his style and ability, he’s certainly the most relevant and credible male solo artist in the industry. It was actually a weird co-incidence that led to his appearance on the track. It was early July and myself and Adam were staying at a hotel in Greenwich Village during some downtime from the band, we were hanging out together at the bar downstairs and James walked into the room wearing a leather jacket and black shades, he spotted both myself and Adam and came over, we chatted for a few minutes before he said that he was heading out to this party down by the Hudson and he invited us and during the ride over there we started talking about music and I just mentioned the idea of him featuring and he was extremely interested in it, we got to the party and just basically did our own thing but we saw him the next day and we talked a little more about it, then I basically went away and wrote the song with Justin.”

An opening acoustic guitar introduction provided by Justin Mullen begins with the gentle twang of its strings showing instantly the general tone and softer element to the song which as a song about a long distance/ill-advised relationship is the third of its kind in Riot! territory with previous efforts, ‘Long Distance Conversations’ and ‘A Million Miles Can’t Break Us’ feeling like companion pieces to this particular song from the outset and the emotional side to the song is clear from the opening lyrics as Amy softly sings, “If you were still here with me/These nights wouldn’t feel so cold/I find an old sweater that once belonged to you/I pull it over my shoulders as I stare at these four walls/Hoping that there’s a chance that you’ll break through/But as the clock counts down the seconds/They quickly turn to minutes and the minutes vanish to hours gone by/And before I realize it, my day has disappeared/And it takes all the strength that I have/Not to cry.”

The opening verse from James Urie is performed to the backdrop of the acoustic guitar, with his powerful masculine rock vocal delivery it provides an alternative for fans of the rock group that reaches its first glimmering moment of glory during the brief combination of both Amy’s vocals and James’ own vocal as they sing together, “These nights are cold/I’m sat here alone/Praying for you/That our dream comes true.” which is quickly followed by a powerful verse from Urie that as a regularly touring musician he must be able to relate to strongly as he sings, “Each city appears the same to me/Just blank faces with vague similarities/And I sit and drink until my heart ache’s no more/But it’s clear to everyone that it’s on show/I stare across the bar/Just trying to picture your face/But the longer we spend away from each other/The harder it is to trace.”

Another brief hook which features the two singing in combination makes an appearance once more which leads into the final verse of the track, as the two singers acknowledge the difficulty of their situation as they both finally come to the decision to end things. The tenderness of the acoustic guitar matched with emotive vocal delivery from both, first as Amy sings, “Well maybe this wasn’t meant to end well/Because god knows that we tried/He also knows that we fell.” which quickly leads way for the vocals of James Urie as he then counters that with the following, “So maybe we should take the warning signs/That these two souls weren’t meant to intertwine/So maybe we should shake hands and part our ways/Hope that we both find happiness someday.” and the two combine their vocals once more as they sing together the final words of the song, “But until then, I wish you well/And we’ll wave goodbye to our long distance hell.” and with the final vocal combination by the both ends in silence, it signals the unwanted end of not only the fictional relationship but also of the song too.

Lyrics

Vocals Key
Amy – Purple
James – Dark Blue
Together - Black

If you were still here with me
These nights wouldn’t feel so cold
I find an old sweater that once belonged to you
I pull it over my shoulders as I stare at these four walls
Hoping that there’s a chance that you’ll break through
But as the clock counts down the seconds
They quickly turn to minutes and the minutes vanish to hours gone by
And before I realize it, my day has disappeared
And it takes all the strength that I have
Not to cry

I’m a million miles away from you just wishing to be there
Dreaming of running my fingers through your long flowing hair
But we knew that this wasn’t meant to be
My work takes all this away from me
And I’m just stuck in this same routine again

These nights are cold
I’m sat here alone
Praying for you
That our dream comes true

Each city appears the same to me
Just blank faces with vague similarities
And I sit and drink until my heart ache’s no more
But it’s clear to everyone that it’s on show
I stare across the bar
Just trying to picture your face
But the longer we spend away from each other
The harder it is to trace

These nights are cold
I’m sat here alone
Praying for you
That our dream comes true

I try my best to face each day as it comes
But it’s starting to get too tough for me to smile
No one’s heart could take this pain
Least of all not mine
The beating of the raindrops that fall
Has become the melancholy soundtrack to my mind
And the empty space that surrounds me now
Just reminds me that there’s more loneliness to come
Because this heartbreak isn’t familiar
I know it’s only just begun

These nights are cold
I’m sat here alone
Praying for you
That our dream comes true

Well maybe this wasn’t meant to end well
Because god knows that we tried
He also knows that we fell

So maybe we should take the warning signs
That these two souls weren’t meant to intertwine
So maybe we should shake hands and part our ways
Hope that we both find happiness someday

But until then, I wish you well
And we’ll wave goodbye to our long distance hell

Title: The Webs That You Weave
Genres: Pop-Rock, Alternative Rock
Length: 3:28
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: June 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer, Adam Benjamin

Background & Song Description

‘The Webs That You Weave’ is a song by the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. Written in early June 2012 while on tour, it was another of the earlier songs written for the bands third studio album and was even performed at the final two concerts of the ‘Demand & Supply’ world tour that the influential group of teenage musicians were taking part in. The track was written by both Amy Meyer and Adam Benjamin who at this point have become the primary songwriters for ‘Riot! In The Boulevard’ although a large portion of the groups material still comes from their red-haired frontwoman.
It was written on the tour bus with the acoustic guitar playing of Adam Benjamin leading way for Amy Meyer to come up with the lyrics and general theme of the song, it distinctly follows the black hearted nature of the bands sophomore album, reminiscent to many of the scathing attacks against love that appeared in a vast majority of the material for ‘Cradle To The Grave’.

The song was written acoustically on one lonely sleepless evening of travelling during the 2012 world tour that the band embarked upon in support of fellow rocker Lily. It’s one of the now regular collaborative efforts between both Amy Meyer and Adam Benjamin who have begun to develop a highly consistent songwriting partnership since the release of their previous album and Adam’s more prominent role within the band environment and according to Amy, “I always really considered myself to be a solitary songwriter, the songs that I write bear witness to a feeling or thought that I’ve been having, sometimes just in the very briefest of moments. But since I began writing the occasional song with Adam I noticed that it was something I was more capable of doing than I had initially thought. When you’re writing with someone else it’s always a lot more of a pressured situation because a lot of writing and re-writing goes on and with someone else involved it makes it more important not to come up with terrible lyrics and word structures because there’s the added pressure of public humiliation but thankfully it’s easy to write with Adam because he’s open to very many different possibilities and he’s always telling me that nothing I ever write is completely unusable, there’s always an outlet for a verse that doesn’t fit in one song to somehow fit into another and so since we began writing songs together I feel like I’m a lot more open to collaboration than I once was.”

Although it was written with an acoustic guitar, the song opens with the eerie western-esque tones of a pedal-steel guitar that is provided by Justin Mullen, it sets the dark theme of the song and it’s quickly pounced upon by the droning noise of the bass lead and the repetitive drumming from Nathan Mullen and quickly the lyrics come into play as Amy sings in an almost beaten down world weary vocal the opening lines of the song, “I saw the tiniest moment of grace I the light/When you stood with the prophets in the darkness of night/You raised your hands to the sky like the conqueror of millions/But forgot about your loved on in the crowd of civilians/The shadows are cast and the silence begins/I stared at your heart in the hope that you’d let me in/But as I glanced at your eyes, I could see all this pain/I knew that I had lost you and our love could no longer remain.” which gives the song it’s mournful and depressive set-up for what is to come in the following verses of the song.

As the second verse comes to its haunting end it’s quickly followed by a driving guitar riff provided by Adam Benjamin and it’s matched perfectly with the energetic drumming of Nathan Mullen, quickly comes the lead vocal delivery from Amy Meyer as she sings about the reminiscent feeling she gets, “I’ll wander the streets where we once spent out youth/I’ll remember our joys in a brief moment of truth/I’ll star at the swings where we used to play/I’ll lie in the fields where we used to lay/I’ll stand by the river and take shelter from the rain/I’ll remember us for the good times rather than the pain/I’ll stand on the bridge where we shared our first kiss/I’ll remember the times that I can’t help but miss.” the power anthemic vocal from Amy is then quickly changed to a quick-fire and aggressive follow-up verse as all of the guitars come crashing into focus all mirrored around the strong vocal delivery of the following lyrics, “From childhood friends to teenage lovers/From nervous children to fathers and mothers/From misfits and losers that don’t belong/To the tragic protagonist in the words of a song/To the beaten and broken in the rules of love/To beautiful and fragile watching us from above/To the ones who’ve lost hope and can’t seem to be found/We’ll take these feelings to our grave as we’re lowered in the ground.”

And with that the song softens dramatically, just left with very minimal music to the point where it almost sounds like Amy is now singing acapella save for the very faint acoustic twang of the guitar somewhere way in the background of the song, Amy’s vocals are mournful once more, “You drew me in like a wave on the shore/You made me feel like there could be something more/Like I could be your saviour the one that could make you believe/But you never warned me about the webs that you weave/So I’m here without you to spend forever alone/I should have seen the real you.” Amy pauses for approximately six seconds and gently whispers, “I should have known.”

Lyrics

“I saw the tiniest moment of grace in the light
When you stood with the prophets in the darkness of night
You raised your hands to the sky like the conqueror of millions
But forgot about your loved one in the crowd of civilians
The shadows are cast and the silence begins
I stared at your heart in the hope that you’d let me in
But as I glanced at your eyes, I could see all this pain
I knew that I had lost you and our love could no longer remain

You told me from the beginning, from the start
That your unable to love, that you have a dark heart
You said your soulless and empty and everything that I’m not
You don’t care if you hurt all the people you’ve forgot
But there’s a place in your body where I belong and should be
But you made it clear that it would remain empty

I’ll wander the streets where we once spent our youth
I’ll remember our joys in a brief moment of truth
I’ll stare at the swings where we used to play
I’ll lie in the fields where we used to lay
I’ll stand by the river and take shelter from the rain
I’ll remember us for the good times rather than the pain
I’ll stand on the bridge where we shared our first kiss
I’ll remember the times that I can’t help but miss

From childhood friends to teenage lovers
From nervous children to fathers and mothers
From misfits and losers that don’t belong
To the tragic protagonist in the words of a song
To the beaten and broken in the rules of love
To the beautiful and fragile watching us from above
To the ones who’ve lost hope and can’t seem to be found
We’ll take this feeling to our grave as we’re lowered in the ground

You drew me in like a wave on the shore
You made me feel like there could be something more
Like I could be your saviour the one that could make you believe
But you never warned me about the webs that you weave
So I’m here without you to spend forever alone
I should have seen the real you
I should have known”

Josh: It's no secret that we're huge fans of you guys, we've made that pretty clear over the past year or so. To be honest though R!ot, we're bloody sick of complimenting you and telling you how y'all are! You guys are incredible. Everytime we hear new material from you, we can't help ourselves but to praise you. Your work ethic is also top quality, you guys never take a break and are constantly working on new records or tours. That is admirable. Upon first listen of 'A Place Called Home' we all stopped what we were doing immediately and sat back and took it all in. It sounds silly but it's the truth. Amy's lyrics are damn amazing. Although Adam and co can write a pretty kick-ass song too!

OOC: Love the lyrics again! Really, really good!

Amy: Haha thanks Josh, we must be doing something right to keep you complementing us! Seriously though, thank you it means a whole lot. Yeah, I think we’d probably go crazy if we were just being idle, but then again we’re 19 and we don’t have children or crazy relationship issues, we’re in a position where the complete focus is on the music and our careers so really all we have is recording and touring, but we love it, haha! Wow that’s an awesome compliment for “A Place Called Home”, I’m glad it managed to catch the attention of you guys and thank you once again, we put a lot of effort into our songwriting so we’re glad that you enjoy what we come out with!

OOC: Thanks, I wasn’t so sure about the lyrics but I’m glad that people seem to like them!

Title: Forget About The World Outside, It’s Just You And Me Tonight
Genres: Pop-Rock, Dream-Pop, Electro-Pop
Length: 4:51
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: October 2012
Writer(s): Justin Mullen

Background & Song Description

‘Forget About The World Outside, It’s Just You And Me Tonight’ is a song by the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. It was written in October 2012 by Justin Mullen and Amy Meyer, approximately halfway through the recording of their third studio album in New York City, it’s one of the most pop-infused tracks that the band have recorded since their breakthrough into the industry in 2011. As a song written by Justin Mullen with additional help from Amy Meyer it takes on a slightly different feel to previous more darker material from the band. But on this track it puts an emphasis on the positive, essentially a young guy or girl telling their partner to ignore the negative comments that may come their way and to just live in a moment of complete togetherness.
The song was written in the studio over a couple of days by Justin Mullen, he was reluctant to offer the song forward as a possibility for the band to record but eventually Amy encouraged him to show the song, a couple of lyrical tweaks by both Amy and Justin and the song was decided to be recorded for the album rather swiftly as one of the album’s rare uplifting and positive moments.

The song was primarily written solely by lead guitarist Justin Mullen, with a little additional help from Amy to refine the song slightly but the full writing credit for the track goes to Justin, it was a surprise to him that the band actually wanted to use the song, “I write a lot of songs, I just tend not to place them in consideration for the band, there’s the occasional song that I’ll offer forward for us to all work on and I’ve done that in the past but the majority of what I write is at home because I prefer to write for the enjoyment rather than with the added pressure of having to come up with something special. So when I had written this song, I knew that it was perhaps a little too pop-oriented for the band, we tend to avoid that upbeat quintessential pop song as a rule and prefer to go with things of a more powerful nature. So a song like this isn’t a natural contender for a record of ours, but the guys and Amy all enjoyed the lyrics of the song and the possibility of having a light relief sort of song, to sort of provide some sort of balancing act and it turns out that this track fits in quite well with the general theme of the album.”

A dreamy Owl-City-esque keyboard opening provided by Amy Meyer gives the song a very instant quirkiness to it that is rare in a Riot! track. A soft drumming beat is included in the background as the guitars are rather quiet during the majority of the entire song, it’s opening lines are sung in hushed tones by Amy, “I remember that winter night/When we were both alone/You told me not to think about the morning light/Because it would just remind me that I’m on my own/Just live right now, live for the moment/Don’t think about tomorrow/Just stay here in my arms tonight/We’ll hold our bodies tight.” and the energy of the keyboard playing kicks into full swing as Amy moves into the next set of lyrics, “Just forget about the world outside/Tonight it’s just you and me/Forget about all the things that we’ve done/We can’t rewrite our history/We’ll make it work/Somehow, someway/We’ll make it work/Don’t pay attention to a word they say.” which pushes the emphasis on ignoring the negative comments that people will use against the couple in the song, for whatever reasons.

Amidst the keyboards tones Amy then continues to sing about the haters. “Well they can criticise us/Hate and chastise us/They can push us down/Right to the ground/But we’ll rise from the ashes/The smouldering wreckages and embers/But we’ll be the people that everybody remembers.” the guitars becoming slightly more prominent but avoid stealing the attention from the keyboard tones that give the song it’s obvious slightly electro pop elements, the songs chorus returns once again this time with slightly modified lyrics and is quickly followed by the follow-up verse as previously heard which closes out the song.

Lyrics

“I remember that winter night
When we were both alone
You told me not to think about the morning light
Because it would just remind me that I’m on my own
Just live right now, live for the moment
It’s what you said to me
Live right now, live for the moment
Don’t think about tomorrow
Just stay here in my arms tonight
We’ll hold our bodies tight

Just forget about the world outside
Tonight it’s just you and me
Forget about all the things that we’ve done
We can’t rewrite our history
We’ll make it work
Somehow, someway
We’ll make it work
Don’t pay attention to a word they say

Well they can criticise us
Hate and chastise us
They can push us down
Right to the ground
But we’ll rise from the ashes
The smouldering wreckage and embers
But we’ll be the people that everybody remembers

Let’s forget about the world outside
We don’t need them now
We’ve got each other and that’s all that matters
In this house where two soul’s join together
It’s not clichéd to say it’s forever
It’s gonna last
No matter what they say
We ain’t breaking
Anyway

Yeah, they can criticise us
Hate and chastise us
We can bruise and we can bend
But we’ll fight and defend
Because it’s worth fighting for
A love they’ll never know
They can push us down
Right to the ground
But we’ll rise from the ashes
The smouldering wreckage and embers
But we’ll be the ones that everybody remembers”

Title: Written In The Stars

Written: September/October 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer

Background & Song Description

‘Written In The Stars’ is a song by the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. It was written in late September/early October 2012 by Amy Meyer at her new apartment in Greenwich Village, New York and it was included onto the bands third studio album during the final weeks or recording as they attempted to refine the album’s running order before they began preparing for the No Venues Tour in early November and the final mixing stages of the album. The entire song was written by Amy Meyer, the first version of the song came to fruition one late night in September. After a long day of recording and the emptiness of her new home in New York City it’s been stated that, “The words just all came bellowing out in that moment.” and it was evident quite quickly that this was potentially an iconic song for the band as it mixes all of the elements of what their fans enjoy about the band from driving guitars and anthemic lyrics of the confusion that love and other such emotions bring.

The image of a solitary loner sitting by the window of her New York City apartment, miles from home just watching couples walking hand in hand way below on the streets and her still rather adolescent mind just rushing with images of past love that has gone by for whatever reasons is described by a reviewer after interviewing the red-haired singer and being given the opportunity to listen to the track, Amy describes the process and situation as follows; “I’m a very messed up sort of person, I’m aware of that probably more than anyone else that’s ever met me, I don’t need people to tell me how truly screwed up I am inside because I see it every day, every time that I look into a mirror I see it. I can’t deal with my real emotions, when things get scary and start moving too quick I’m the first to run, it’s who I am, I’m a runner. I can’t help that fact, but there’s moments of complete focus and drive and determination and those moments tend to appear when it comes to writing and performing. I can’t be in love, not truly. I don’t know how to be and I can’t even explain it in words, I can’t talk about it to a friend because I just don’t know how to explain it. I can write about it sometimes, not all of the time but sometimes I can and this is one of those times.”

An opening piano introduction provided by Amy Meyer, combined with a loud and energetic lead guitar riff from Justin Mullen set the scene for the song, the rhythm tones of Adam Benjamin’s guitar along with the steady bass playing from Jason Greenberg and the gentle but prominent drumming from Nathan Mullen create the picture of a quintessential Riot! In The Boulevard rock song and the lyrics follow suit as Amy opens her lungs and bellows out the opening lyrics, “I don’t know where we’re going, this is all brand new to me/I’ve heard people talk of love before, it’s not something I could ever see/I don’t know the direction, to lead you to my heart/I’ve never been one for perfection/And I ain’t gonna start.” and is quickly followed by the second verse which begins to show the self-deprecating side to Amy’s songwriting, “I’ve been independent/For as long as I can remember/I’m without a flame, I’m just a burning ember/I’ve kept my cards close to my chest/Took care of myself and left all the rest/Because I know that I’ll be safe and sound/All alone with no-one around.” a brief instrumental break as all the musicians are given a few moments to flourish.

As another verse flies by at a quick pace, it leads into the powerful and anthemic chorus, backed by the strength of the guitar and drum playing from the band Amy once again opens her lungs to provide an incredible rock vocal delivery on the chorus, “It’s written in the stars/It’s blazed across the sky/It’s buried in our soul/Until the day we die/It’s there for you to take/So please treat it like your own/Don’t ever make it break/Please just give my heart a home.” as the guitar riff continues and another verse passes by the rise of the music continues as Amy delivers another vocal master class with more self-deprecation in her lyrics as she sings, “Now I’m neurotic, vulnerable and scared/With all kinds of thoughts running through my head/But it’s all worth it when you hold me tight/Because I’m finally in love and I’m willing to brave the fight/I know we’ll make it and we’ll be alright/At the end of the day/When all is said and done/I’m truly yours/It looks like you’ve won.” and as it’s followed by the chorus once more, the song ends with a bang.

Lyrics

“I don’t know where we’re going, this is all brand new to me
I’ve heard people talk of love before, it’s not something I could ever see
I don’t know the direction, to lead you to my heart
I’ve never been one for perfection
And I ain’t gonna start

I’ve been independent
For as long as I can remember
I’m without a flame, I’m just a burning ember
I’ve kept my cards close to my chest
Took care of myself and left all the rest
Because I know that I’ll be safe and sound
All alone with no-one around

But there you are, wherever I look
I close my eyes, and your image is stuck
It’s stuck like a memory that I just can’t let go
Just like a familiar face of someone that I used to know
You’re stuck in my head, I can’t shake it free
I’m crazy for you
And it seems like you finally got me

It’s written in the stars
It’s blazed across the sky
It’s buried in our soul
Until the day we die
It’s there for you to take
So please treat it like your own
Don’t ever make it break
Please just give my heart a home

You told me to give you a chance
Take a risk on a true romance
You opened me up and you healed my scars
You taught me how to let love in
And now I find myself sat at my window counting the stars

Now I’m neurotic, vulnerable and scared
With all kinds of thoughts running through my head
But it’s all worth it when you hold me tight
Because I’m finally in love and I’m willing to brave the fight
I know we’ll make it and we’ll be alright
At the end of the day
When all is said and done
I’m truly yours
It looks like you’ve won

It’s written in the stars
It’s blazed across the sky
It’s buried in our soul
Until the day we die
This thing that they call love
It’s true what they say
It’s enough to make the world go around
You gotta fall in love someday”
