‘Crossroads’ is the third studio album from the teenage American rock group, Riot! In The Boulevard and fourth overall album during their first three years of becoming professional musicians and making their rise within the music industry as one of the prominent rock acts. Unlike previous albums that were recorded in Los Angeles, this album was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City, New York and it was produced by Riot! In The Boulevard and Isaac Lovelock between August to November 2012. It’s been noted that the album follows a similar dark-oriented lyrical style to that of the material from their sophomore album ‘Cradle To The Grave’. It is the highly anticipated follow-up to the diamond certified ‘Cradle To The Grave’ released in February 2012 and follows hot on the heels of their platinum selling first ever live album ‘From Field Trip Festival 2012’ released at the end of September 2012 and recently becoming their third #1 album.
The album will feature an eleven song selection of brand new music with varying different styles which also includes the recently succesfull number #1 charting single, ‘Somewhere On The Horizon’. According to rhythm guitarist 'Adam Benjamin' the album’s title is in reference to the fact that the band are now at the crossroads between youth and growing up and a lot of the material mirrors that element. The album is set for release worldwide on 18, November 2012 and will be distributed by ‘North Hill Records’
Album BackgroundEver since their breakthrough into the industry in early 2011, Riot! In The Boulevard have worked almost non-stop with release after release and tour after tour in order to find their spot within the ever-evolving music industry and this latest release is no different. Following the testing recording sessions for their sophomore album and the release of ‘Cradle To The Grave’ at the beginning of the year, the band embarked upon a world tour in support of fellow rocker and friend ‘Lily Abbott’ that stretched from February through to June, a brief two week break followed before the band re-convened in New York City to begin planning what was next on their horizon, it was certainly going to be a busy second half of the year to match that of the first half. They agreed on putting out their first live album, which became their third #1 album and another one million-plus seller, a surprising outcome when you consider the fact that the CD/DVD release contained no new material but instead the opportunity to see what a Riot! concert is truly all about.
They then all agreed that they’d like to work on a third studio album but on the advice of friends and family they took a vacation throughout the majority of July, although the term vacation should be used loosely as they spent a lot of that time planning for their future, Amy decided to make the permanent move from Las Vegas to Greenwich Village, New York along with Adam Benjamin, while Justin, Nathan and Jason opted to remain in Las Vegas at least for the short term future. Amy and Adam had just about settled into their new homes in New York City when the band entered Avatar Studios in August, it was the beginning of a three month reality embargo for the band as they spent almost every day inside the studio, firstly to produce the ‘Live From Field Trip 2012’ album which took close to a month to finish and then to dive head first into the writing and recording of their third studio album ‘Crossroads’.
Speaking about the recording of the album Amy Meyer had this to say,
“It can be difficult to find new ground when you’ve covered so much of it in such a short space of time. But we keep wanting to put out new things for our fans and develop as a band. At some point we will have to take a long break from the routine of writing, recording, touring, writing, recording, touring. It can be difficult, but the surprising thing with the recording of this album in comparison to the recording of our last album is the fact that we haven’t really fallen out once, at least not dramatically like during the sessions of the previous album. It was a very hardworking and understanding sort of environment to be in during this album and that probably surprised me the most, perhaps we’re growing. I say perhaps, I think when you listen to some of the songs it’s quite clear that we’re growing, growth is pretty much the main theme of the album in my opinion, it’s very much a coming-of-age type of album.”, this is of course in reference to the fact that the band almost came to an end prior to the completion of ‘Cradle To The Grave’.
Justin Mullen shed light on the differences between then and now,
“We’re all pulling in the same direction right now, we all want pretty much the same thing, we see our favourite bands with a back catalogue that spans years and years, decades even and that’s what we want to be. Too many times have we fallen in love with a new exciting band that was gonna change the face of music forever to just be disappointed when they didn’t even get to their second record. We want to be a band that is still standing in thirty or forty years or more. I’m not saying it’s going to happen but that’s where we’re aiming towards. I’ll admit that myself and Amy may have been the main problem and source of friction in the past in regards to where we should go and what we should do as a band but now feels like a huge calmness and understanding. The band appear to be becoming closer more and more, I don’t think it’s a bond that can be broken easily.”The album features eleven songs and follows in a similar lyrical and musical theme to their previous studio album, although there is more emphasis lyrically on growing older and the ‘Coming-of-age’ situation that each member of the band finds themselves in. The album features vocal appearances from James Urie and Isaac Lovelock, the latter co-produced the album alongside the band.
