OOC: Got a chance to read so far and I love it :) I like how you describe in between the lyrics so it's easy to imagine.

Hayden: Wait, wait, wait a minute here! Erich Hess has a wife that's German? Wait, I've been talking to your wife? Hm, go figure. Well I like this album Ada :) You're about the only talented German that I know that's out today so that's bonus points.

TITLE: Mother
BY: Ada von Wannemaker
LENGTH: 4:22

The song starts out with the sound of a church organ playing a slow, funeral-like melody. Soon, Ada’s guitar is heard playing along with the organ, and Ada’s voice crashes through, sounding almost in pain as she loudly sings the lyrics, sometimes out of tune.

Bag full of oily rags and fifty cent lighters
Dreams of retirement in Cancun burning ever brighter
There is a lot of ways to make money in this world
But I cannot recommend insurance fraud

Burned out shell of a Volkswagen

Ada’s voice goes into a high pitched, almost squeal, as she continues to sing. She sounds like she’s on the verge of tears.

Blood stains on the driveway
Torn up Mercedes by the side of the highway
Big plans, big plans
Let me tell you something, mother

Ada is obviously crying at this point. She can barely make out the words that she’s singing as she continues.

You will never get away with it

You were sitting in the recliner with the TV on
When you said something evil, and then you were gone
Explosives in the water main

The music stops, and Ada sings (as best as she can sing through her tears) in a capella:

A blown fuse
College graduation photograph
Splashed all over the six o’ clock news
I will not be cashing in your policy

She plays out a simple guitar tune as she sings the last line.

Until I find out that it is you are trying to do to me

TITLE: Death of a First Love
BY: Ada von Wannemaker
LENGTH: 2:57

The song starts off with a folk-country guitar, Ada’s sweet voice flowing as she sings, in a happy tone:

The rain fell all night and it kept me awake
It was still falling by morning
It was hard to take
And you were sleeping on the floor
Breathing free and even
If I ever want to drive myself insane
All I have to do is watch you breathin’
And at 5 AM, I turned the radio on
And an old man’s voice sang a short, sweet song
And then the static roared again, hungry for blood
I heard the rain falling from the rain spout
Down, down into the sweet, wet mud
And you punched out all the windows
And the wind began to wail
And you gathered your hair behind your head

There’s a small harmonica solo, keeping with the guitar in the background. When Ada starts singing again, her voice as a more distant, echoing effect to it, as if she just realized how depressing the story is that she’s telling.

Like god was going to catch you by the pony tail
And then the old voice crackled through the static
And I felt young and alive
And the hair stood up on the back of my neck
We were rising from the grave, ja ja.

TITLE: For Erich Hess
BY: Ada von Wannemaker
LENGTH: 4:19

The song starts with an echoing of Ada’s voice repeating “Will you save me a seat?” “Will you light us a fire?” and “This song is for you.” All the word seem to filter together as the echoing of each sentence continues until suddenly there’s a quick stop, and a there’s a slow beat of the guitar playing, the sound of Ada’s voice coming in, slow, deep and real.

If you get there before me, will you save me a seat?
If you get there before me, would you save me a seat?
But if I never get there at all
Would you leave the seat empty?

Ada holds “empty” as the echoing sentences come back, beginning to drown her out. As the echoes continue, the guitar is heard again, this time playing a faster, happier melody than before. As the echoes fade out, Ada’s voice comes back in, singing in a faster, higher pitched voice.

If you get there before me, will you light us a fire?
If you get there before me, would you light us a fire?
But if I never show
Will you watch the embers glow?
Would you keep the fire burning?

Ada holds “burning” the same way she held “empty” before. The music continues for a few moments, flowing from the fast paced into a slower beat, her voice coming back in with the faster paced, higher pitched voice.

This is a song for you, in case I never make it through to where you are.
This is a song for you, in case I never make it through to where you are.

She holds “are” the same way as the others before, but this time she goes into an operatic voice, reaching an incredibly high note, before suddenly stopping, ending the song.

TITLE: Without Me
BY: Ada von Wannemaker
LENGTH: 3:29

The song starts out with a harsh guitar, being played very forcefully in an almost unattractive manner. Ada’s voice is still flowing and sweet, but has a hint of anger in it.

Bluejays and cardinals all come out to play
Highway traffic gets out of your way
Skies clear up if they are overcast
Pit bulls are gentle when you come past

Stars come out of hiding for you
And I would, too
Because this world could not hold you
You slipped free
Ja, this world could not hold you

The music fades out and she sings the single line a capella.

You slipped free

The song returns to the way it was before.

Without me

New seen all over everything
When you open up your mouth to sing
Baseballs travel further when you watch them fly
Apples fatten on the trees when you walk by
You bring something irreplaceable to each and every day
Or you used to anyway

The song slips into the a cappella again, as Ada sings the one line:

But this world could not hold you

The song takes on a sense of rising action as Ada’s voice grows more and more passionate, and then suddenly stops.

And you slipped free
Ja, this would could not hold you
And you slipped free
Without me

TITLE: Onions
BY: Ada von Wannemaker
LENGTH: 2:08

The song starts off with a sweet, fast paced, almost happy guitar melody, Ada’s voice in its normal, sweet, flowing fashion as she sings:

The last white slabs of snow
Melted off seven weeks ago
And the geese are heading north again
Through the tightening sky

Ada holds “sky,” and the song slows down considerable as she sings the next line.

And I can feel my heart in my throat again.

There’s a short instrumental solo, the guitar carrying on in the slowed down fashion that it has been playing, and then Ada picks up singing again, her voice much deeper and more elusive this time.

New onions growing in the ground.

The cows come gingerly out of the barn
And when they see that the ground is warm
They pick up a little speed
It makes me feel so good

Again, “good” is held, and the song slows down considerably for the next line.

And I feel it rushing down my throat

The song is obviously beginning to come to an end as the guitar continues to play the very slowed down melody, but Ada sings a sped up version, singing extremely quickly over the mellow guitar.

Fresh blood
I head out onto the earth
Its cold heart is melting
I do not know if I can stand it
Springtime is coming, that means you will be coming back around
New onions growing underground, underground

”Underground” is held, the guitar fades out, and then Ada’s voice fades.

TITLE: My Last Family Vacation with My Uncle
BY: Ada von Wannemaker
LENGTH: 2:32

The song is very slow paced, with Ada’s voice coming through, slightly drunken sounding, but still the sweet Ada voice. The song has a hint of folk-country feel to it as it goes.

As we cruised across the German border
You reached into the glove box, pulled out a micro-cassette recorder
Started quoting Tolstoy into the machine
I had no idea what you meant
I guess I am supposed to figure these things out

The song still has the same feeling, but grows faster, with a sense of a delayed rising climax.

Or maybe it is supposed to be self-evident
But I have gone feral
And I do not speak the language anymore
We are headed deep into the forest; I have got the pedal to the floor
The engine shudders, like a dying man, when you reach out to grab my hand

The song slows down a bit as the guitar starts to fade out, and Ada sings (almost a capella) over the sound of the dying instrument.

You can bring out all your weapons
You cannot make me go to war

Long winding German highways
Innumerable evergreens

The guitar starts playing again, faster than ever before, as Ada sings along, keeping up the same pace. Her voice sounds pained, worried.

Weather forecast on the AM radio
Says we will be expecting highs in the low teens
When I mouth my silent curses at you
I can see my breath
I hope the stars do not even come out tonight
I hope we both freeze to death
Look at the person I have turned into, tell me
How do you like her now?
No standards of any kind to break; no creeds to disavow

The guitar suddenly becomes much much slower, and Ada’s voice seems to shrink, as she sings the last four lines with a scared tone to her voice, as if she were a small child.

I am right here where you want me
Do what you brought me out here for
You can arm me to the teeth
You cannot make me go to war
