GREETINGS/MISSION STATEMENT
Hello! My name is Kazuo and I'm the vocalist for The_elegy, a Japanese Alternative/Experimental rock band. We're from Tokyo but are currently residing in Los Angeles. We've come to America from Japan in order to attempt the unthinkable: to spread our music and gain a worldwide following. I'm going to be the one updating the site the most (I have the best english) and we hope to release an album that will be available nationally very soon.

BIOGRAPHY
The Elegy (stylized as the_elegy) is a Japanese Alernative/Experimental rock band formed in Tokyo in 2010 consisting of Kazuo (Vocals) Jirou (Guitars) Shuya (Guitars) Ryuhei (Bass) and Shogo (Drums/Percussion). Their music is extremely experimental, often blending genres and blurring the line between poppy melodies and alt-rock/prog musicianship. Mildly popular in the Japanese underground music scene, they've released one Japan-only EP entitled 'Grief' in 2011, and are hoping to re-release it on an american label. Their lyrics are in Japanese and some English, and they hope to break the language barrier and appeal to fans overseas.

GRIEF - TRACK LISTING/SONG DESCRIPTIONS
TRACK 1. SAKURA NO KI (Cherry Tree)
Lyrics by: Kazuo
Composed by: Shuya

OOC: Seeing as I don't want to massacre this by using google translate, for all intents and purposes, lyrics in ITALICS are in Japanese, so use your imagination.

The song begins with a slow, clean electric guitar chord progression, thunderous drum rolls, and a rumbling bassline. The first lines of lyrics are spoken in a hushed, frantic spoken word style.

the window is parted slightly and through the stony bars
i can faintly smell it, the scent of cherry blossoms on the wind...

The clean guitar chords continue, a faster bassline and tribal drumming accompanying it. A jangly acoustic guitar takes over the previous chord setup while the electric guitar plays some faster, more distorted sections. The lyrics are almost chanted, getting gradually faster and being sung with more emotion.

the doors are closed
the windows locked
still the smell
wafts through the currents of air,

the currents of air
so strong with the scent of freedom

The bass breaks down into a heavier rhythm and the guitar plays a few lead lines before reverting back to the first verse part, the vocals back into their ominous, chanting style.

it seems as if i can't remember who i am
i'm not sure i know who you are either
what's my name? is this my face
the mirror reflects a stranger

just leave me alone
in darkness, begging for light

the song takes a surprising turn as it the guitar plays an upbeat chord progression with the acoustic rattling off behind it, the bass keeping rhythm and the drums becoming simple but powerful

an unending stream of tears that flows from my eyes
i seem to remember little things
the odor of cherries thick in the air
i think i remember happiness

an undending stream of tears from my eyes
don't you wish we could still speak?
kept silent under a stark white blanket
i'm locked away for good

The guitars, drum and bass play a syncopated, rolling groove and the next lines are whispered.

can anybody hear me out there?
does anyone hear me scream?

Before returning back to the verse groove, an extended instrumental section with a short guitar lead pre-empts the second verse.

the doors are closed
the windows locked
but still that scent
it wafts through the currents and vents

The second verse doesn't last long, and it's back to the uplifting chorus.

an unending stream of tears that flows from my eyes
i seem to remember little things
the odor of cherries thick in the air
i think i remember happiness

if i turned to dust tomorrow
would i even really care?
or would i be thinking of the smell
of freedom in the air?

The rhythm only becomes stronger as the end coda, a slight variation on the chorus melody slowly begins to fade.

if my life is meant to end
scatter my ashes about the trunk
of the magnificent cherry tree in the yard
at least in death i'll nourish something beautiful

at least in death i'll nourish something beautiful

The coda eventually turns from the uplifting sound of the chorus to the ominous verse sounds, and the last two lines are whispered in a hushed, almost frightened tone.

am i being heard?
am i being heard?

before the song ends abruptly with a hum of feedback.

TRACK 2. MOTHER
Lyrics by: Kazuo
Composed by: Ryuhei, Shuya

ooc: lyrics in italics = japanese, lyrics in bold = english

The song begins with a strange, static-y sounding synth piece, sounding a bit like a formal dance/ball music. A pitch shifter is used to give the synth strange, whammy like effects that fluxuate and vibrate as if a radio station is being tuned in and out. A jarring, angular guitar riff comes in that is soon coupled with a mimicking bass line and almost funk like chords, giving the song a chaotic, frenzied sound. The opening lines are sung with a harsh, gritty scream, and are doused with effects that give it a ghostly, ethereal, echoey sound.

cheap life gimmick
cheap life gimmick

drastic measures

cheap life gimmick
cheap life gimmick

drastic measures

the frenzied guitar fades into a descending and ascending, very ominous sounding chord progression to match the grimly chanted lyrics of the first verse

labled very neat
sealed away in jars
sanguine soup of blood
ingest to be alive

nourish living things
garden of flesh in blood
despair inside my womb
why did you leave me?

and with a sudden flourish, the chorus comes in, upbeat and uplifting despite the grim nature of the song's lyrics. the jangly acoustic guitar returns, giving the song an oriental feel as it picks out shamisen-like lead lines

now winter comes
and still you're gone
didn't you say you'd be back by now?
i'm all alone, our child is dying

a piece of you, will be with me
until the end, i promised you
our child will live, if only to die
our child will survive

instead of going through the whole intro part again, the song shifts right back into the descending and ascending verse chord progression, Kazuo's voice getting more frantic and horse with every line

labled very neat
sealed away in jars
mainlined into veins
bloody addiction

pieces of your skin
sperm i saved away
wait for it to kick
ingested every day

and back into the uplifting chorus section, the drums becoming faster, giving the song an almost pop-punk feel as 2 new stanzas are added to the chorus

now winter comes
and still you're gone
didn't you say you'd be back by now?
i'm all alone, our child is dying

a piece of you, i kept with me
i swallowed you, you lie with me
now feel our child kick
such strong feet

i vomit now, your flesh and blood
my body rejects what we once had
our love was pure but the white death
will take even our son

so now i wait
for winter to end
he no longer kicks
our child dies

the rest of the instruments fade away leaving only the acoustic guitar plucking the bare chords of the chorus as Kazuo's voice echoes for two lines

perhaps it will be
a mercy killing

before the intro riff comes back and the song ends where it started, the multitracked, echoed voices growing louder like a schizophrenic conversation

cheap life gimmick
cheap life gimmick

drastic measures

TRACK 3. HARU NO UTA (Song of Spring)
Lyrics by: Kazuo
Composed by: Jirou

ooc: lyrics in italics = japanese, lyrics in bold = english

The song begins with a quiet, subdued guitar chords that play alone for a few seconds before being joined by tight, ghost-note laden drumming and rumbling, clear bass. The first verse starts each line with Kazuo singing in english, in a whispered tone, then followed by emotional singing in japanese.

give me pain - so maybe i can feel
give me pain - something to help me sleep
give me life - but only if we can share
give me - you know
give me pain - at least until we slumber
give me pain - the snow is so cold on our skin
give me pain - i remember the lights
give me - but i don't want to remember

the transition into the chorus is beckoned with a squeal from the guitar amp as a distorted version of the clean verse riff is played. the chorus vocals are extremely emotional, Kazuo's voice bordering the line between belting the lyrics with emotion and screaming,

the way we lived our lives in that time, with no regret
still i can see you walking away, under the marquee lights...
the way we loved each other, back then, with no regret
still i wish i would've called you back, under shelter of marquee lights...

the verse motif comes back, Kazuo's voice sounding more hushed and frantic

give me life - sometimes i forget to breathe
give me luck - i'm so pained on my own
give me life - inject it into my arms
give me - something to stop the bruising

before going back into the chorus, Kazuo's voice getting more intense and raw sounding,

the way we lived our lives in that time, with no regret
still i can see you walking away, under the marquee lights...
the way we loved each other, back then, with no regret
still i wish i would've called you back, under shelter of marquee lights...

a bridge part is played, to the same melody of the verses but without the whispered english vocals

romance forged in the back seats
of a van that ended up at the bottom of a lake
still the seats are stained with our blood
and with the tears of young ones in love

romance forged in desperate times
through pain and misery, our hearts entwined
through regret and sorrow, i made you mine
but you were not somebody keen on being owned

and soon enough the intro part with just guitar is played, with the vocals being whispered in english

give me life...
give me life...
get me high...

soon its just the bass and drums, with Kazuo speaking the lyrics. A lot of effects are used on his voice to make it sound muffled and electronic, as if speaking through a megaphone.

the pain and the dark side of the spoon
come hand in hand in those days
sometimes i regret my decisions
but those decisions lead me to you

i see you when i close my eyes
walking away from the shelter of the lights
hand in hand with the strange man
why did i think you could go it alone?

a numbing sensation rushes through my limbs
in my arms, in my veins, there is snow
limitless now, i can stay up all night
scratching at the bugs that aren't really there

and with a pained scream, the chorus comes back. Kazuo's voice literally is growing rawer with each line, and you can hear him begin to cry and scream at the top of his lungs, gasping for air from the force of his screaming and wailing, almost feeling the tears through the music.

the way we lived our lives in that time, with no regret
still i can see you walking away, under the marquee lights...
the way we loved each other, back then, with no regret
still i wish i would've called you back, under shelter of marquee lights...

the way we lived our lives in that time, with no regret
still i can see you walking away, under the marquee lights...
still i love you, i could never ever regret our life together
if i close my eyes i can see you walking away, from shelter of the marquee lights...

as the song begins a small end coda part, the vocals become nothing but frantic screaming over a morose, calm backround of music

a numbing sensation rushes through my limbs
in my arms, in my veins, there is snow
limitless now, i can stay up all night
scratching at the bugs that aren't really there

give me love...

and as the music falls away, Kazuo calmly speaks the last line

i'm still waiting for you...

TRACK 4. KUREDORU (Cradle)
Lyrics by: Kazuo & Shuya
Composed by: Shuya

The song begins with a twinkling melody that sounds like it's being played from a child's music box. It gradually slows to a stop, and a hum of feedback is heard before the music starts with a fast, chorus-drenched guitar riff and machine gun drumming. Fast guitar chords are accompanied by echo-ey lead lines by shuya. This continues for a minute until the music slows down to just drums and a pounding bassline, and the vocals start, slow and menacing.

looking out the bars of the cradle
waiting for mother to feed me her nectar
waiting for mother to shake her hand at me
sadistic mother, loving me so painfully

the pre-chorus starts, almost optimistic sounding, an ascending riff is played and backed by a solid drum/bass groove.

12 years past, and look at me
so alone and still so guilty
so pained but i miss it, must find a new mother

the blood flowing from these scars
only brings me blinding sweetness
only waiting for the return of my mama

the chorus starts, shimmering chords from Jirou are backed by acoustic chords from Shuya. Kazuo's voice sounds full of remorse, and he really shows off his vocal range.

some day maybe
i'll know what kindness means
but until then
tighten straps and crack the whip

some day perhaps
i'll know proper love
but until then
pull my gag and scar me again

the intro riff is played again followed by a short instrumental break before going back to the drum and bass groove of the verse, the vocals back to slow and ominous.

13 years now still i'm lonely
but not for much longer, i plan
i've met the most stunning woman in Gion
with skin so pale i can't wait to stain it red

the pre-chorus part is repeated again, Kazuo's voice sounding more frantic.

translucent skin so white you can see the blood beneath
i'm at the verge of tears, can't wait to bleed her dry
oh mother, sweet mother, please return to me
i think i've become what you always wanted

the chorus comes back, the vocals remorseful and powerful,

some day maybe
i'll know what kindness means
but until then
tighten straps and crack the whip

some day perhaps
i'll know proper love
but until then
pull my gag and scar me again

the guitars fall away with a squeal of distortion and a only the drums and bass remain. Ryuhei gets a solid bass groove started and takes an almost funky, masterful solo section before the music takes an uplifting turn, Kazuo's vocals seeming more optimistic, with bright acoustic chords being played

yes, open the door
force my corpse inside
with locks and chains
separate me
from this world so cold

the guitars drop out once again, and kazuo's vocals become distorted, with electronic sputtering and short circuits being heard in the background

translucent skin so white you can see the blood beneath
i'm at the verge of tears, can't wait to bleed her dry

before the instruments return to complete the pre-chorus part

the blood flowing from these scars
only brings me blinding sweetness
only waiting for the return of my mama

and the instruments drop back out again, leaving Kazuo's mournful vocals being backed with somber piano chords and violin

some day maybe
i'll know some proper love
some day maybe
i'll know what kindness means

some day maybe
i'll know what kindness means
but until then
tighten straps and crack the whip

before the instruments come back, and the chorus is repeated one more time

some day perhaps
i'll know proper love
but until then
pull my gag and scar me again

some day perhaps
i'll forget mother's love
but until then
scar me just like she did

after which the intro riff is repeated, the guitars, drums and bass getting more frantic sounding as they slowly fade out

TRACK 5. READY TO DIE
Lyrics by: Kazuo
Composed by: Jirou

The song starts with slow piano, but it sounds far away and echoey. After the piano riff is repeated a couple times, Kazuo's voice comes in, it too sounding distant and muffled.

do you remember when we stood on the hill?
and conversed about our dreams
those days seem so long ago
and i'm afraid there won't be anymore

the chorus starts, Kazuo's voice stops sounding distant and becomes clear and full of sorry, and is backed by a distorted, distant piano

the snow falls evenly on the path we walked
covering it with a foot of regret
and i'm afraid i'll never reach you

the rose i left for you will wither and die
in the stagnant waters that life provides
such is the way of the world

the piano now stops sounding muffled and is heard fully, and a few light drum accents are heard in the background of the second verse.

do you remember that dirt road?
where our learning feet did tread
so long ago, no longer will we walk it
and i'm afraid i've nothing left to learn

with a thunderous drum fill, the guitars and bass come in, the bass rumbling and low and the guitars shimmery and high, making the chorus more powerful

the snow falls evenly on the path we walked
covering it with a foot of regret
and i'm afraid i'll never reach you

the rose i left for you will wither and die
in the stagnant waters that life provides
such is the way of the world

spending my life tethered to machines
electronic despair in the womb
and i'm so lonely, it's my time to go

the rose i left for you will wither and die
in the stagnant waters that life provides
such woe

the guitars, drums and bass drop out again, leaving only a twinkling piano melody as Kazuo's voice becomes distant again, his voice sounding hesitant and resigned to sadness, once again sounding muffled.

but don't cry
no, please dry your tears
remember me always
and i will try to remember you

the piano melody ends and the song stays silent for a few seconds, before a sound of distortion is heard. The single, squealed bend is played on the guitar, and Jirou starts playing an extremely heartfelt solo as the the other guitar, drums and bass come back in. Jirou and Shuya trade off lead lines for a bit before the song goes back into the chorus,

the snow falls evenly on the path we walked
covering it with a foot of regret
and i'm afraid i'll never reach you

the rose i left for you will wither and die
in the stagnant waters that life provides
such is the way of the world

the song takes an uplifting turn, Kazuo's voice sounding optimistic and full of heart, and his vocals are backed by a choir, giving it a heavenly, ethereal feel.

ah but how beautiful
the graceful falling snow
maybe life isn't so bad after all
don't cry for me
don't mourn for me
i'm finally beautiful

ah but how amazing
the wonders of life
maybe this isn't the end
don't cry for me
don't mourn for me
i see the beauty

symphonic violins come in to back the last section, giving it a soaring, powerful feel.

ah but how i'll miss you
ain't afraid to die
but you must promise me
and say to me
you won't forget me
i see your beauty

this world of beauty

the symphony and choir drop out, as the opening piano melody is played slowly. Kazuo's voice comes back in, once more distorted, and softly sings the last line.

do you remember when we stood on the hill?

TRACK 6. KENSAKU (Searching)
Lyrics by: Kazuo
Composed by: Shuya, Shogo

(ooc: italics = japanese, bold = english)

The song begins with a quick, delay-soaked guitar riff accompanied by piano and a hi-hat. After a few seconds, the music stops as Kazuo belts out the opening line,

i'll be near

the music sounds pop-rocky and uplifting, and Kazuo's distorted voice can be heard in the background, speaking in english,

don't be afraid, it's in death we know
that we're happier now
i won't be dying
i won't give up

the poppy part continues for a bit more before it tones back, sounding serious and almost somber for the verse,

something about your voice makes me think
that you're a little different
different enough maybe to still a beating heart
or patch up and dry it's tears

the pre chorus is quicker, Kazuo's vocals ascending and descending along with the guitars.

i was stupid and young and jaded
i grew up thinking everything could be spit on
now i'm older and dumb and faded
oh so faded

but instead of a chorus, we're treated to the poppy riff again, as Kazuo sings a single line, straining his voice,

i'll be near you

and after the song returns to the verse and prechorus parts,

everything i've observed looks so ugly and grey
like dirt, dust or soot
painted myself into this corner alone and screaming
to be let out

i was stupid and young and jaded
i grew up thinking everything could be spit on
now i'm older and dumb and faded
so faded and grey

the actual chorus finally kicks in, uplifting, almost sounding like J-pop, although Kazuo's voice sounds somewhat cautious even while reaching high, soaring notes,

then the seasons changed
and the grey faded away
all thanks to you
and the sunshine you brought

then the rain stopped
and my umbrella opened
all thanks to you
and the sunshine that you are

the chorus transitions into a fast paced bridge, with a quick guitar solo from Jirou before returning to the prechorus,

i was stupid and young and jaded
i grew up thinking everything could be spit on
now i'm older and dumb and faded
so faded and grey

and then back into the chorus, sounding more and more uplifting with every stanza,

the weather changed
and the clouds went away
oh, all thanks to you
and the things you do

then the rain stopped
you brought my parasol
oh, thank you
and the sunshine you are

you are brightness
you are everything
i want to be with you
in the sun forever

even when the night comes
i don't wanna be away from you
when our time comes
i'm fine with being gone with you

Kazuo holds the last note, the song almost sounding like it's going to end, before the chorus part continues

the weather changed
and the sun came out
all thanks to you

even when the night comes
i don't wanna be away from you
when our time comes
i'm fine being gone with you

as before, Kazuo holds the last note, but it eventually fades away with the rest of the instruments and the song, and EP, end.

(ooc: finally done! now time to write an album e__e)
