WEEKEND - TONIGHTArtist: Weekend Title: Tonight Released: TBA April Length: 3:39 Genre: Electropop, Dance-pop Written By: D.Blue, B.Khan, S.Hollywood Produced By: LosOscuros From The Album: Wild Young Free Pop Justice ReviewPop Justice wrote:Tomorrow, January 22nd, will mark exactly one year since Weekend released their debut single and teenage anthem 'Everything About You'. Since then, it just all took off for the five boys. A sold out world tour, two multi-platinum number one albums, five consecutive top 5 singles (two of them becoming massive number ones) and not to mention bucket loads of media attention. They went from five strangers, struggling with school and college life and desperate to change their lives. After all five successfully auditioned for G2L member Lyrica Ocha; Scott Wellington, Riley Hamilton, Billy Khan, Oscar Ward and Dustyn Blue all gelled together and formed the boy band 'Weekend'. Little did they know that they were about to become one of the biggest music sensations in years and would be selling millions in all corners of the world. Instead of having a huge big party to celebrate their astonishing year in music, the boys are gearing up to release their sophomore album which means lots more music. These lads don't know the meaning of the word break and judging by their new song, they aren't giving up the pop throne they share with Izzy without a fight.
Their debut song 'Everything About You' was a typical boy band song about a girl and how the boys feel towards her (sung by Dustyn Blue through gritted teeth back then). It was a cute little song, catchy and a great debut for a new pop band. Afterwards, the subjects of the song became more 'party' oriented and all about having a good old time (as shown in their biggest seller 'Lock It Up'). The new single 'Tonight' however sees the boys return to the age old boy band tradition of singing about love but instead of being soppy, this one packs a punch. Think of this song as 'Everything About You 2.0', a continuation you can say. It's a new, hand raising, feet stomping take on the traditional boy & girl song. In this stomper of a track, Weekend are waiting to pluck up the courage to speak to a girl and tell her how they really feel. 5...well 4 guys after her at the one time? Lucky b*tch! Anyway, they seem to have been put off in the past or lost their nerve but tonight it's now or never and they're going in for the kill. Not caring if they're shot down and rejected, they just want to know how this girl feels and who knows, maybe they might get lucky? I know that the female (and some male) listeners will be imagining that the song is about them. Reality check. They're all taken, unfortunately. On a really side note, we can't help but wonder if a certain verse refers to a certain rival group.....just putting that out there....
"Tonight" is another pop gem from the lovable quintet and is catchier than a cold. Billy's silky smooth vocals open up the track and immediately lure you in. Unlike previous Weekend singles, all the boys get some time to shine. Lead singer Oscar takes the majority of the song which is fine by us as he has an amazing voice. Dustyn Blue gets a decent chunk as well and his Irish accent seems to come through a lot on this track which we all love. This is the first time Billy has sang the opening to one of their singles and it is hands down the best start to any song they have ever recorded. Riley also gets a nice verse to himself. It has always been clear he has a good voice but sometimes it comes across as too nasal and needs some controlling but the laid back beat to this song allows Riley to relax and not try so hard. Another shocker is the fact that Scott Wellington gets a whole verse to himself! Mr Wellington has always been noted for having the weakest voice and as much as we love him, it's true but as stated previously, the relaxing backing track doesn't require huge, belting vocals which is good for Scott. The best thing about this track though (not that it plays a major part in the song) is when the five boys all sing together. The harmonies! In the past, when they all sang together they didn't really blend well and you could pick out individual voices but on 'Tonight' it sounds like a sixth tone, a completely new voice never heard before on a Weekend single. It's so smooth and although they all have extremely different voice types they merge together perfectly.
Overall, this track has 'classic Weekend' written all over it. It's fun, cute, bouncy and all that good stuff. While the song isn't anything groundbreaking it does its job which is to entertain their massive fan base. 'Tonight' doesn't try to be anything it isn't. It's not pretentious and the boys are proving that there is nothing wrong with being in a pop band, it's shamelessly commercial and upbeat and will definitely not seem out of place on the charts in a few weeks time. Weekend don't have to prove anything and when they could easily make an album filled with just different coughing noises and watch it outsell half of the artists today, why bother trying to impress critics and go all out when they can just take it easy and have a blast at the same time?
