VIDEO: Stephanie Fierce and Director Mark Romanek Discuss "Insane" Music Video

UserPostedImage

Where are we going in terms of budget for this video? I mean, we're talking Stephanie Fierce here, I'm sure this going to be bananas.

Mark Romanek: Yeah, but we focused more on the concept rather than just making an "expensive music video", it's just that in order to bring someone's vision to life that can kind sometimes be costly (laughs). So yes, the budget for this video was pretty high, and I'm used to doing high budgeted videos, but what I will say is that the treatment for this one was very different from anything I've done before. I can tell Fierce had been working a lot with director Chris Cunningham, because of the influence that's been installed within her. But like I told her, I really love challenges, so I took on to the treatment and honestly everything really came together pretty well.

Can you tell us more about the video?

Mark Romanek: The video takes place in the future time. We didn't try too hard to be futuristic because I think that's very tacky. We saw a lot of that in the mid-late 90's and I'm not trying to go that route, especially with someone like Stephanie Fierce. We did however try to blend reality with the latest modern technology. That you way you get that raw feel rather than something that is probably created by green screens.

Does the video have some sort of story line, or is the video straight to the point? If there is a story line, can you tell us?

Mark Romanek: This is not narrated in the video, but basically after her death, Stephanie Fierce had been preserved or I guess if you say the right scientific term, she'd been "Cryonically frozen". It is believed that scientists; in the future of course, finally find a way to bring those cryonically frozen human beings back to life, but with partial robotic parts. Their first successful experiment happens to be pop icon Stephanie Fierce who was also kept frozen after her death. Obviously, things as such cost a lot of money, but I'm sure Fierce could afford something like that if she wanted, (laughs) so I guess you can say that's ideal in the story. So, in the video you will get to see Fierce strapped in this futuristic laboratory, and her body is sort been thawed, she's really pale and you can tell she's dead.

Obviously, we are pretending like scientist finally did a discovery, because it is highly impossible to kind of develop a theory as to how all of this would be possible. So things aren't really explained but people will hopefully get to understand what's going on through the imagery. For example, while being strapped, these currents are sent through Fierce's body and she kind of lifts in survival. Also, the sound that the machine makes during this process is really the intro of the song, so it all kind of blends perfectly with the imagery. As the scientist continue trying to revive her, her body begins to shake in abnormal forms as it would if it was being electrocuted (laughs). Once they are successful, they begin to kind of celebrate and they sort of lose the focus and the whole purpose behind the project. That kind of things represents a lot of record labels, when they reach success, they kind of lose their purpose and turn their celebrities into monsters in order to survive.

So as the video continues, after being successful with their project, they then decided to turn her into this super cool fierce robot who's capable of doing anything. They even program intelligence above human standards, so much to the point that they are eventually unable to control her and she manages to escape. So after managing to escape, she kind of lashes back at everyone and that's when the concept of the song kicks in and the rest is history.

I guess, you can say that this video just of kind of represents where Fierce is at the moment. She's now labeled an icon and there are so many high expectations, any move could be her worst. She sort of wanted to make a statement with that, basically saying she will never give up and that her legacy will be unbreakable.

And if you were to make a pop video out of all that, of course we will someway somehow have to implement dance scenes
(laughs), and that's when Fierce's choreographer steps in, not me . It's amazing, how well Fierce picks things up, It would take me ages to memorize some of the dance steps she had to do.

How is this video going to be different from recent Stephanie Fierce videos?

Mark Romanek: As of late, Fierce's music has been based more on instrumentation and musicianship, but this record allows Fierce to shows her ability as a dancer because it is a pop record. It's been quite a while since we've heard a dance break in Fierce's music as well as seeing one so that's an exciting thing we worked on with this video.

I just listened to "Insane" and I really love your grimy vocals and the cool 90's beat. This is a smash. How do you think the fans will be reacting towards this "Insane"?

Stephanie Fierce: "I think the fans are gonna love it. They might be a little shocked, but I think they'll love it!"

What was it like, working with Mark Romanek?

Stephanie Fierce: "He's an incredible person. I never work with people who are one dimensional, and this guy is far from one dimensional. He understood my vision and I understood his, so I definitely feel like we worked well together."

What would you say was the hardest part about shooting this video?

Stephanie Fierce: "The hardest part was not trying to laugh, because I had so much fun. I think we were trying to be angry and serious at first, but in the end it turned out to be this attitude fun filled video. I really enjoyed making it."

How did you manage to shoot this video in the middle of a tour?

Stephanie Fierce: "Having no days off (laughs) I'm kind of already numb to this level of work but I'm really over working myself at time I cannot lie. I kind of like this pressure of work though because that's how I've been raised in the industry. I'm already working on the next video (laughs).

In relation to your new album, this song is described to be the "revel" track, what can your fans look forward to in terms of sound overall on "Immortal"?

Stephanie Fierce: " Well this song in particular, it sort of like breaks the ice. But My new album as a whole definitely contains a lot of new styles of music I haven't done before. There are certain songs that go into the more Adult Pop Contemporary genre, which is the first time I've taken that approach with any of my music. There's another song that has a funk soul kind of feel but it's really different from anything I've done. Another thing is this 80's vibe thing going in a some of the songs but it's not overdone to the point where you feel like you're listening to an 80's record (laughs). It just gives you that feeling, but overall I will say this record is definitely different from all of my albums but it also represents where I am as an artist and as a person at the moment. The album is now done through the seasonings, all I got to do now is put it in the oven and I"m more than hopeful it will come out just right" (Smiles).

OOC: This looks very good :)

Kato: Stephanie Fierce is still the woman to beat when it comes to music. Who knows, maybe I'll join her on her throne one day ;)
