Lyrics:
I used to always let my dreams exist, only in black and white
Because I lived a life so full of colour, I'd escape from it each night
I'd tightly close my eyes and let the vibrant colours drain away
The greys of night helped dim the pain of rainbows through my day
Reaching out, trying to grab the stars,
As I escaped this world within my dream
Chasing another wonderful wild sensation,
Colours turn to emptiness in my imagination
A better life existed when I dreamed
Creating my own mystical illusion
Pulling myself free from my own perpetual confusion,
Escaping in my dreams
I'd look at myself some nights and hope for more beyond this mirror,
I'd cry myself to sleep as I prayed for a dream where I'm a winner,
No dreaming of distant lands and wondrous plans are ever going to be
Better than what I see
Reaching out, trying to grab the stars,
As I escaped this world within my dream
Chasing another wonderful wild sensation,
Colours turn to emptiness in my imagination
A better life existed when I dreamed
Creating my own mystical illusion
Pulling myself free from my own perpetual confusion,
Escaping in my dreams
I once thought that my existence was worth more when I close my eyes,
When I let the shades and hues go, to live among my own hopes and lies,
Dancing in the dark, I felt like I was wandering somewhere without light,
No forests or jungles, no dreams of wealth, no super powers or flight
I was afraid to let my dreams die, to sacrifice a world where things were better,
To give up something I created, a story pulled so slowly apart letter by letter
I hid the notion from myself that the dreams where something I needed
To bring the colours back would be to lose, my wonderland conceeded.
Reaching out, trying to grab the stars,
As I escaped this world within my dream
Chasing another wonderful wild sensation,
Colours turn to emptiness in my imagination
A better life existed when I dreamed
Creating my own mystical illusion
Pulling myself free from my own perpetual confusion,
Escaping in my dreams
Letting the colours come back to my sleeping hours was more than a mountain
But when I did, I saw the beauty, the rainbow as the sun shines through a fountain
I let the sun shine in my dreams, I watched the leaves blow in the gentle breeze
Their colours brighter than I'd seen, as the lines between life and sleeping freeze
I seek out real things in my dreams, I look for strengths, wishes and games
I allowed myself to want for more, to know what I need would not burst into flames
Allow me to wash away those memories of dreams so bland and grey
Let the colours rush back in and take the fabric of the past and make it fray
I let the light in as I walk through forests of dreams, and love, and wonder
The ability was born once more to sleep, and in there ponder.
Reaching out, trying to grab the stars,
As I escaped this world within my dream
Chasing another wonderful wild sensation,
Colours turn to emptiness in my imagination
A better life existed when I dreamed
Creating my own mystical illusion
Pulling myself free from my own perpetual confusion,
Escaping in my dreams
Description:
Katie says: "This was a bit of a 'new dawn' moment for me. It's the first time I've written a song in almost a year, after a break that was long overdue having done a lot of recording and touring for the three years before it. It's been a fantastic year in the last 12 months, and a lot has changed in my life, but I was delighted to get back to music. The chance to work with Ryan is not one that anyone would pass up, so when he came to me with a chance to write and record for his show, I couldn't say no. People might think that there would be some form of animosity over what happened when our friendship came to an end, but I think we're all over that. We are adults and professionals after all, and there's still a great deal of respect there on both sides I think. I also got the chance to work with Scott RH behind the glass for the first time. That was exciting. He and I have been friends for a long time, and it was the first time I got the chance to work at the studio he and Gia have built, which was sensational. They have top facilities there. All at home as well. I'm proud of this track. It's very much exciting for me to have the chance to write again, and I feel this is very Katie Coyle. You can take it either literally or figuratively, that's the beauty of the lyrics in my eyes. Is it about dreams? Or is it about the change in everything I've gone through and the way I now have the ability to escape the, quite frankly ridiculous, behaviour that used to tarnish my life? I'll let you guys decide on that one (smiles). I'm just delighted to be able to get new music out there, and to work on a project that is so massive, so well thought out and so exciting. It's going to be a great feeling to be able to say I was a part of it."
Dreams of Monochromatic Visions is a folk pop song written by genre-defining superstar Katie Coyle. It sees the 20-year-old English singer return from almost a year on the sidelines with a track that is quintessentially her. With the acoustic guitar, slow and adventurous as ever, Katie's voice as smooth and haunting as it has always been, and a lyrical imagery that stands almost unopposed at the top of the game, this song is sure to remind all Katie Coyle fans why they fell in love with her following her debut in 2010. In terms of sound, the song is a folk pop crossover that brings the slow and deliberate finger picking of the former genre into the realms of the latter with an adventurous and bold ambition that has always been inherent in Katie Coyle music. The choruses are stripped back and bare as ever, allowing the lyrical imagery to shine through more prominently.
It is in the chorus that the song becomes perhaps more adventurous, with the dulcet guitar tones being backed by a string quartet and the gentle overtones of a piano. Katie's vocals become more fluid as she runs words together to create a sound that serves to bring the dream world she sings about in the song to life. These choruses sound a lot deeper, larger and more voluminous than much of her work of the past as she experiments with other types of instrument to bring a new sound to what she does. It has an almost dramatic sense of suspense and depth behind it. It suits the idea of a soundtrack well, with a gentle yet memorable sound that will stick in the mind of viewers and evoke a certain emotion and memory associated both with the show and Katie Coyle herself.
As the final chorus of the track comes to an end, the song turns instrumental. The string instruments and piano become far more prominent, sounding much louder than the guitar as it turns towards a sound that is almost classical in tone, yet curiously in keeping with what has come before it. For the final minute or so of the song, the strings and piano play through a range of swirling emotions, the fluidity of the former providing the notion once more of a world that exists only in a dream, beautiful, distant and dramatic. Meanwhile the piano almost punctuates the piece, directing emotion and leading the listener by hand throughout the vision of Katie Coyle, from sadness to happiness, from being lost to found and from desperation to ultimate success. The final notes of the song are gentle and long, played on a lonely violin as Katie's voice hums softly in the distance.
Everything Has an EndingArtist name: Ryan Ross Hernandez
Genre: Folk rock, country rock, Americana
Track length: 4:17
Writer(s): Ryan Ross Hernandez
Producer(s): Ryan Ross Hernandez
Description:
Ryan Ross Hernandez brings the sounds that made his most recent LP a critical accalim, onto the soundtrack of his show. "Everything Has an Ending" is a ingratiating four-plus-minutes of foot tapping, acoustic strumming, guitar driven Americana music. His influnces remain close to home with the Young's and Dylan's of the world (the latter of which is referenced in a whimsical line along with his classic album "Blood on the Tracks".)
The singer-songwriter mourns the demise of a doomed relationship, while examining himself and his (repeated) actions that letdown the circle of his closes. It's not an entirely unheard subject matter for the 35 year old, but with each year he brings more of his maturity. And in a likely long sigh of relief, the track makes it clear that Hernandez's voice is back and can still compete with the best of them, with his vocal range that doesn't fether too high.
Lyrics:
So relax, take a breath, or another drag of your cigarette
I was just taking a trip down memory lane
Reminiscing on our better days we spent together
We use to own the night like stars of the night
You were the star that shinned as bright as you pleased
Your love turned into hate on that unfaithful day
You must wonder why I drowned out our love
We lost, we lostI still pace around trying to figure out
Where things turned to a fall from grace out of our dream
Why should we pretend like we don't know?
Keep buying into your own notion
Well why don't you?
It seems everything I love I letdown or let go way too soon
My heart is heavy, thinking of each time I've repeated the same old cycle
Finding comfort in Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks"
I wish I had enough blood left to drain on the tracksI'm just a man who goes around in circles wherever he roams
I'll find true love then make up an excuse I'll believe to leave
You should've known me better than that
Each fake smile and open-ended conversation gave me away
Your love turned into hate on that unfaithful day
You must wonder why I drowned out our love
We lost, we lostI still pace around trying to figure out
Where things turned to a fall from grace out of our dream
Why should we pretend like we don't know?
Keep buying into your own notion
Well why don't you?
It seems everything I love I letdown or let go way too soon
My heart is heavy, thinking of each time I've repeated the same old cycle
Finding comfort in Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks"
I wish I had enough blood left to drain on the tracksSo relax, take a breath, or another drag of your cigarette
I'm waiting, waiting for the day I do not give up on you
I'm waiting, waiting for the day I do not give up on you
It seems everything I love I letdown or let go way too soon
My heart is heavy, thinking of each time I've repeated the same old cycle
