GENRE: Technical Death Metal/Deathcore, Melodic Death Metal

3. Facial Reconstruction
4. Insomnia (Featuring Rob Heath)

BACKGROUND/RECORDING:

Acts of Hate will not die. They've faced firings, quittings, church protests, broken down tour buses, marriage, and even pregnancy, but they've lived through it all. They've lost and gained two members since their last release, the Cold Blooded Christmas EP (a bizarre experiment that was half funny and half disgusting) adding bassist Jay Adler and guitarist Scott Ramsay to their ranks. For the last month or so, the newest incarnation of Acts of Hate have been spending their time finishing the ODIUM AETERNUM EP, a project that has been in the works since early 2013.
Quote:
Sam: "The EP was started sometime in January on the Duke of Winchester. This was probably during Acts of Hate's darkest days. We locked ourselves in a studio and ended up with nothing but a few rough mixes and a handful of lyrics. I knew I had to scale back so that I could spend more time with my wife and so that there'd be less pressure, so we took a break. A really long break. During the break, Jeff got fired and Rob quit, and we gained Jay and Scott, who've both been really awesome and creative when it comes to the new EP. This is the mission statement for a new era of Acts of Hate."

Despite his departure from the band, former guitarist Rob Heath handled all the production on the new EP and provided a guest guitar solo on 'Insomnia,' the fourth track on the record. New members Scott and Jay figure prominently on the EP, having writing credits on every track except Insomnia and Amourtem. As stated by Fischer, this truly is the beginning of a new era of Acts of Hate.

TRACK 1: Behemoth Rising

Quote:
Sam: "Sometimes I get sick of death metal lyrics. Totally sick and tired of them. It got to a point where I was like 'oh, what haven't I written about? Necrophilia? Check. Rape? Check. Cannibalism? Check. I almost wrote a song about bestiality just because it would be 'br00tal.' I don't want to just write about sick stuff. I want to write stuff that makes people think, sometimes, you know? Lots of our new material is like this. There's still a lot of brutality, but there's more substance, you know? Instead of saying 'oh wow it really hurts when some guy chops your fucking cock off' I wanted to say stuff like 'hey, you know who I think should get their cock chopped off?' or 'this world is more fucked up than just the cock-chopping, there's all this other shit that's going on that's fucked up and we don't even realize it.' Now I don't want to get political here - I know absolutely jack shit about politics - but I do know that the entire concept of money is bullshit. Our values are all fucked up. This is where 'Behemoth Rising' came from. Basically anti-materialism, without all the whiny shit you hear from The Devil Wears Prada (the band not the book/movie.)"

The EP begins with a very faint electronic humming, followed by clean guitars and (an unusual first for the band) synthesizers playing ominous notes. There's a very complex sweep arpeggio laden guitar solo that lasts for almost a full minute as the background music slowly builds up to a higher volume behind it, the drums pounding ominously. At about the 2 minute mark, a drum fill signals the entrance of the rest of the band. Tony solos over a chunky, winding riff that's backed by slow, pounding double bass and creepy sounding theremin-like synths. A big difference between the new Acts of Hate and the old is the bass. Jeff, their previous bassist, usually played along with the guitar or in a very reserved manner. This is not the case with Jay, the new bassist. His bass is loud and prominent in the mix, showing off his talent as he plays resounding, percussive chords, claypool-esque slapping, and rumbling solo's. The twin guitar-attack of Tony and Scott is almost overwhelming, as they take turns with one playing odd poly-rhythmic riffs and the other sweeping or shredding over it. Sam's vocals are powerful, and it appears that his growling style has changed a bit, as it is now deeper and less throaty. The song maintains a steady assault of riffery, soloing and brutal slams until the coda, where twinkling, surreal synths back the syncopated guitar soloing as the rest of the band fades out into nothingness, leaving only ominous electronic noises and static.

forever moving
restlessly demolishing
whole city blocks crushed in it's wake
it gnashes it's teeth of gold
it vomits bits of silver
it's creator scoffs
and ashes it's cigar on the face of humanity
it's hull is golden
encrusted with diamonds
as it prepares to steamroll the earth
forever moving, forever destroying
cigarette butts and jellied fire fly from it's mouth
like scalding spittle

so many crushed underneath it's weight
the pressure of monetary gain
overwhelms this country
if genocide is good for the economy
then the majority will be pro-genocide
if genocide is bad for the economy
then the majority will be anti-genocide
we're digging ourselves into a gilded grave
in god we trust, incorporated
to be saved it's going to cost you an arm and a leg
so break these chains
monetary chains
monetary gain
is no excuse to cause pain

TRACK 2: Westboro Baptist Church Massacre

Quote:
Sam: "I'd like to think that I'm a pacifist. I'm usually calm and I don't advocate violence in any situation, but the Westboro Baptist Church just kind of irks me. They suck so bad that I automatically like gay people when I meet them, if only beause they piss the Westboro Baptist Church off. So yeah, that's how this song came to be lyric-wise. And everybody who listens to it, don't actually go out and to it. If anything happens, don't blame me!"

Quote:
Tony: "Musically, this entire EP moves away from the more simplistic deathcore songwriting that was prevalent on our first two EP's and to a lesser extent on 'Unholy Creation'. This song is a prime example. I wanted to write stuff that hearkened back to the golden age of death metal - Cannibal Corpse, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Deicide, stuff like that. It's like a sleeker version of classic brutal death metal. One of my favorite tracks from the new record."

The track kicks off immediately with tremolo picking, blast beats, and double bass, and from there on only progresses in that direction. The riffs are angular and technical, and only get more so as the song goes on, only breaking for the occasional tremolo picking passage. The drumming is equally fast and violent, Neil utilizing blast beats and gravity rolls to get some sickeningly fast drum fills in. Halfway through the song slows down for a lumbering, discordant slam section featuring dissonant chord chugging and rumbling bass sure to incite even the most reserved crowd into a circle pit. It's followed by a masterful twin guitar solo, Scott and Tony trading leads back and forth before returning to the main riff of the song for the ending coda parts.

fuck you!
i'll bring you to your knees with a clip of the shears
bleeding profusely from your severed tendons
praying to your god to kill the innocent
i'll kill the guilty, and that means you
shirley chokes on her warm blood as i bring the hammer down
where the fuck is your god? he can't save you now
it's time for a massacre
westboro baptist church massacre
killing the worthless, freeing their children
the saw is the law, and you're fucking guilty
killing the worthless, freeing their children
the saw is the law, don't try to escape
gagged, shagged, thrown in a body bag
try and crawl, you look fucking pathetic
teeth are removed, skin is excised
try and beg for your worthless fucking life
mangled cock and balls, nose smashed in
it's time to show freddy the wages of sin
the phelps family lies in ruin
rotting in a heap of entrails and viscera
it's all over, the bibles are burnt
it's all over, the perfect massacre
i've enacted the perfect massacre
god hates the westboro baptist church

TRACK 3: Facial Reconstruction

The third track of Odium Aeternum is a pretty standard sounding track for Acts of Hate. Fast, brutal, and heavy. One thing that stands out on this track is Neil's drumming, which is fast and precise, making use of gravity rolls and blast beats. Guitar wise, the track relies mostly on rapidly shifting and alternating dissonant riffs over top a solid foundation of rumbling bass. Tony and Scott used seven string guitars for the recording of this song, and the heaviness of the downtuned guitars resonates in the listeners ears, giving a feeling of mild discomfort as the song lumbers along, ending very abruptly with a final drawn out growl from Sam.
Quote:
Sam: "It's not necessarily about plastic surgery per se, but more about the standards of beauty are portrayed in today's society. People learn to be unhappy with themselves. I think it's total bullshit, so the lyrics take that to the extreme. I don't look down on people who have had plastic surgery, I just think that it's unnecessary. People need to appreciate who they are instead of looking to TV or movies to find what's considered 'beautiful.' We all consider different things beautiful, and in that case, it means that there should be no 'standard of beauty.'"

smashing, sculpting, fleshy play-doh
rearranging
what once was your identity
just watch the blood flow, inject the plastic
bits and pieces of your face
skin so soft soaked in blood
hacking, slashing, violating
why are you so unhappy with yourself?
indoctrinated with a concept of beauty
you were beautiful - before you let me cut your fucking face
mangled remains, bits of gristle
facially fist-fucked, look at yourself
now you're not completely human
2% plastic
facial reconstruction surgery
performed with a chainsaw
what the fuck have you done to yourself?

Erica:I totally agree.

Nina:um..love? You've had surgery and your wife IS the standard of beauty

Erica: I know. I had my surgeries for me. What I saw in the mirror and how I saw myself were two different things. Now they match! *she giggles*

Nina: makes sense, love. If you weren't doing it for you, you'd have got the boobs to match.

Erica:I love my boobs. I'd look silly with anything bigger.

TRACK 4: Insomnia (Featuring Rob Heath)

Quote:
Tony: "This song definitely represents a turning point for Acts of Hate. For the longest time I felt as if we were stuck in a groove, unable to deviate from the simple riff-solo-riff-breakdown formula. 'Insomnia' is probably my favorite track off the new EP because it's so different from what we've done before. Acoustic guitar, melody, we even got Rob to do a guest solo on it, and I have to say it's one of his best."

Quote:
Rob: "My role as producer on the new EP was a big change from actually being in the band. I let them make most decisions themselves, I just tried my best to make it sound good. It was an honor to have them ask me to play on it, even if it's just on one song."

'Insomnia' is a departure from the previous 4 blisteringly fast songs on the EP, starting out with something completely unheard of in an Acts of Hate song until now: acoustic guitar. The intro is soft, two acoustic guitars intertwining and playing harmoniously for a full minute, until a drum solo from Neil shifts the song into overdrive, Scott and Tony playing heavy, complex riffs. The song is fast paced, almost thrashy, reminiscent of Slayer or Metallica. Sam's usual low growls are eschewed in favor of piercing, painful-sounding screams. The song alternates quickly between thrashy passages and slower, mellow parts with acoustic guitars backing the distorted electric guitar leads. Halfway through, a mellower acoustic section segues into a masterful guest solo from Rob Heath, former Acts of Hate guitarist, that really shows off his virtuosic guitar skill. The solo ends and fades into a mournful sounding coda-section, where the acoustic guitars accent the wailing melodeath-like lead guitars as the song fades out.

pupils dilate in the soothing darkness
but no matter how hard i try, i always awaken
unbearable pain, unrelenting suffering
only sedation can quench my thirst for an end
too much of a coward to take my own life
too afraid and weak to live it like a man
she's so strong and i'm so pitiful
how could she love me? how could she care
this love that i can barely believe in
is the only thing that keeps me alive
why do i feel this way?
why do i feel such inadequacy?
i've reached the threshold of emotional pain
i wait for sleep to take me, make my thoughts go away
there's something else, there must be something better than this
although i know there's not, i still try to convince myself
try to convince myself
that maybe there is a god
i know in my heart that it's nothing but a lie,
so i tear my eyes out
every time they open all they see is pain
tear my eyes out
every time they open all they see is pain
tear my eyes out
every time they open...

TRACK 5: This Abbatoir Earth

After the previous track fades out to silence, "This Abbatoir Earth" fades in with creepy ambient noise, footsteps, chains clanking, and some truly vicious pig squeals from Sam. The rest of the track is a pretty standard, albeit groovier, Acts of Hate track. The song is a perfect example of Acts of Hate, with fast tremolo picking, complex riffs, solid drums, and rumbling bass all playing parts. Tony and Scott trade off lead licks over the solid foundation of relentless drum and bass, and Sam is at the top of his vocal performance, his vocals fluctuating between black metal-esque screams, low grunts, and surly pig squeals. The track's outro has to be one of Sam's best vocal performances on any Acts of Hate song, as he screeches inhumanely at the top of his lungs over the relentless riffage of Tony and Scott.

i can't stand the fucking stench
the smell of humanity
take a chainsaw to the world
unstoppable enmity
my hatred is like a river of blood
that flows six feet deep
until the world lies in ashes
i'll never fucking sleep
you all sicken me with your good intentions
they only exist in your fucking imagination
a race of human swine
ripe for dismemberment
a race of human swine
you're gonna fucking get it

i can't stand the fucking stench
you fuck mother earth
i can't stand the fucking faith
pious frauds
i can't stand the way you teach people callousness
i can't stand the way you're so fucking superstitious
you all sicken me with your good intentions
they only exist in your fucking imagination
a race of human swine

ripe for dismemberment
a race of human swine
you're gonna fucking get it

humanity lies dead at the bottom of a ditch
but humanity did this to itself
what a stupid fucking bitch

TRACK 6: Amourtem (Featuring Nichole Fischer)

The last song of the EP begins with two melodic guitars playing mournful notes, fading in as if from a distance. The guitars gradually get louder until a cymbal hit introduces the rest of the band, the bass rumbling beneath the guitar lines as fast tom rolls are played on the drums. This continues for about a minute or so before the song breaks into death metal territory. The guitars play fast, melodeath styled tremolo picking, and the drums play blisteringly fast blast beats. The bass holds down the heavy end, and then the vocals come in, Sam using a higher pitched scream, mixed with growls. Overall, the song is a mid-paced venture into melodic death metal/deathcore territory for the band, with as many melodic guitar lines as there are brutal chugging passages. Nichole's vocals are soft, sedated and morose, clashing perfectly against Sam's pained cries. The version of the song on the EP is different from the single release, the ending is extended with a dark, emotional coda of clean arpeggios and atmospheric sound which echoes and fades out into nothingness, ending the EP.

VOCALS:
Dark Red = Sam
Bright Red = Nichole

in the dark walls of the charnel
my obsession with her corpse will overflow
as i consume, i savour the decay
caress her corpse, her purity i did take away

this is my salvation
no gods, no mediation
this is my redemption
drowning in my contempt, and

i arouse myself as i taste her skin
take the handle of the blade, push it deeper in
stretch the wound, penetrate to soothe my sin
my lust for her will never stop
i return to myself as i taste her skin
feeling the grip of her innards, pushing deeper in
stretch the wound, penetrated so deep within
my lust for her will never stop

is this your warmth that i feel
pressing against my face my dear?
is your presence within me?
you left me cold and so empty

in the dark walls of the mortuary
my obsession with her will overflow
as i exhumed, i tasted her decay
i touch her form, a celibate death i take away

this is my coldness that you feel
pressing against your face my dear
my presence is not within you
but your corpse is delicate to me

within the dark walls of the charnel
my obsession with her will overflow
and i exhume, effluvium decayed
caress her skin, so paper like it flakes away

my dark walls

what is this light?
that i see dancing before my face, my dear?
is his presence within me?
your love left me so empty...
your love will be the death of me...
