Background Info

Non Crux was formed in early 2013 by George "Percy" Shelley and German Hernandez after the dissolution of their previous band, Escapegoats. The two Cleveland natives thus began creating new music that would go in an entirely new direction. Where Escapegoats was another metalcore band trying to be signed by Rise Records, Non Crux delves much deeper than other bands of the same vein. Mixing the atmospheric and reverberating sounds of Shoegaze, the brutality and complexity of mathcore and death metal, and the emotion and angst of post-hardcore, Non Crux is a band that loses no sleep alienating fans of traditional metalcore.

[center]Member Backgrounds

George "Percy" Shelley:
George was born in June 1990 in a small, upper-middle class neighborhood just outside of Los Angeles, CA. At the age of 7, George began taking guitar lessons from his uncle. However, George did not really enjoy playing guitar, and wanted to learn bass instead. By the age of 12 George, now nicknamed "Percy" after the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, was playing his favorite songs by Blink-182 and Green Day. Shelley was, at the same time writing poetry for his school's literary magazine and won several awards for his work. At age 14 his father began to fall into a deep depression after losing his job. The image of his father in this state would influence many of his lyrics later on. Soon his father began drinking and became violent, thus George and his mother left George's father and started a new life in Cleveland, OH. It was at this time George, then 15 met future band mate German Hernandez. The two would form the metalcore band Escapegoats a little while after. Following that band's hiatus/disbandment, George and German began new band Non Crux.

Victor Croft:
Victor was born in March 1991 to a young and very religious couple in the town of Westlake, OH. Victor began from a young age disliking the rules and restrictions his parents, both devout Evangelicals, put on him. His only release was in writing poetry and short stories. Aside from this he sang in a church choir group, although he hated it. Beginning at age 13, Croft began listening to heavy music such as Greeley Estates and A Day to Remember, feeling a connection to the music's intense and emotional style. By age 18 he had been performing in the local music scene with his first band, Young Arrival. After the band broke up due to many band members going to college, Victor continued his journey in music at Cleveland State University. He had been accepted and had also received several scholarships for his choir singing, although he still hated it. He double majored in vocal performance and business. He met both George and German at a local concert venue and was offered a spot on the band's lineup, if he would do screaming. He did more than that. Non Crux is the second band Victor has played with.

German Hernandez:
German was born in downtown Cleveland in April 1990. Although his first love was baseball, Hernandez quickly found his calling playing guitar. Taking inspiration from guitar gods, such as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen, and from more modern guitarists like Tom Morello, Kirk Hammett, and John 5, German creates unique and often introverted arrangements. He received his first guitar, an acoustic, at age 10 from his grandfather, who had been a guitar player in a local jazz group. At age 13 he was diagnosed with diabetes, something he has been able to manage, although it makes travel sometimes hard on him. Also at age 13, German began to play in his school's jazz orchestra. Here he met future bandmate, John Byron, although John wouldn't be in German's life for several years. At age 15 he met another future bandmate, George Shelley. The two instantly hit it off, playing covers of old punk and hard rock songs before going heavier. At age 17 German was accepted to the Berkeley School of Music in New York. However after a year there he quickly found that he missed home. He dropped out and went to community college in Cleveland. Meeting up with Shelley again, they formed Escapegoats. The band would ultimately disband after unsuccessful times on the road. German uses a PRS SE Santana Electric Guitar with six strings, but will use a ESP LTD EC-407 7-String Electric Guitar for recording purposes.

Katherine Beaufort:
Katherine was born October 1989 in the Upper East Side of New York City. Her parents, both lawyers, saw young Katherine doing the same thing in the future. However, when Katherine was 6, her aunt, believing that law was not a very "ladylike" direction, taught her to play piano and to sing. Eventually it was apparent that Katherine was not going to be a lawyer but instead a musician. All through high school, Katherine played in several ensembles and won many awards from her school and community. At age 18 she entered the Juilliard School of Music on a piano playing scholarship. While there she began to listen to rock music. Eventually she was singing and playing piano for the local rock scene. By chance she happened to run into future bandmate John Byron, whom was also on scholarship at Juilliard. The two became friends. When John left for Cleveland to meet with high school friends German and George, she asked to come along as well. When Non Crux was started, Katherine was asked to provide piano and keyboard tracks for early demos. This however soon turned into her becoming a full-fledged member.

John Byron:
John was born May 1990 in Cleveland, OH. From the very start, John was interested in playing guitar. He taught himself, starting from the age of 9, every song, scale, riff, and melody he heard. However his parents, believing that guitar was an instrument of the devil, decided he should learn a more sophisticated instrument. He began to learn cello as a result. When John entered high school, he became friends with German Hernandez, a fellow guitar player and member of one of the school's ensembles. The two would drift apart after senior year, when John was accepted into Juilliard. While there he met future bandmate Katherine. The two became instant friends. When German contacted John a few years later to start a band with him, he gladly accepted and brought along Katherine. John takes his influence from guitarists like Toni Iommi, Alex Lifeson, and Jimmy Paige. However, he has also taken much influence from bands Converge, Botch, and Parkway Drive. John uses an Ibanez RGA8 8-String Electric Guitar and uses a Ming-Jiang Zhu 909 Cello during recording.

Irwin O'Brien:
Irwin was born to Irish immigrants in August of 1989. A native of Boston, Irwin got into the local Irish punk scene. His parents, although never around much due to a strained marriage, encouraged Irwin to play music to his hearts content and make his dream come true. At age 16, Irwin left Boston to pursue his dream of becoming a musician. He decided that Cleveland was the place to go, due to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame being located there. He took a job in Cleveland cleaning tables in a small restaurant to help keep himself fed. He met German Hernandez years later at a concert and the two became friends. Originally, Irwin was not the drummer for Non Crux, but after the original guy left, Irwin got the spot.

Band Blog Post:

George: Just got back from our writing session. Stuff is looking really good.

Katherine: George and I wrote a song that is almost finished. It needs some polish but it will be coming soon.

Irwin: Ain't it a weeee bit early to start putting out another song so soon after our last? My fingers already hurt from writing all night.

George: Hey, until we get signed we need to work, work, work, and work some more. It's all for the chance to let the world hear our music, whether the world wants to or not.

Irwin: Ain't we a bit ambitious...
