The screen comes into focus, and Katie Coyle can be seen on a sofa in the corner. Whilst Alexa Chung addresses the camera, it is clear to see that Katie is unusually comfortable. This is her first TV appearance in a while, and certainly her first public appearance since she went a bit crazy...but she looks well, and she has a smile on her faceAlexa: And now we have my next guest for tonight. Studio audience, people at home watching on TV, give it up, for the lovely Miss Katie Coyle! Hi Katie, how are you?Katie: Thanks Alexa, hi! Well, I think asking me "How are you?" at the moment is a bit of a risky investment...(she laughs) but yeah, I'm good thanks just now, happy to be here!
Good good! So, it's a bit of a strange platform for you to be on MTV, you being a folk starlet, you've never really met the crossover for an audience like this have you? But you've had a lot of airplay this week!Yes! It's been quite unbelievable actually. I mean, I've always been the same, my music is made first and foremost, for me...actually that sounds selfish as hell. What I mean, is that I write from my own heart, and for most of my life, it was just me that was interested in what I had written, but there's been a lot of support this week.
Were you surprised, given the immensely personal nature of the single?Ha! Well, I'm surprised anyone has ever listened to any of my music to be honest! Up until recently I was a very unassuming person, so yeah, it comes as quite a shock that a song I have written, as just like, an ode to my own memory of a place in time, has been so well received!
Tell me a bit about the single if you could.Wow, ummm what can I say? Obviously, "Naked on Paper" and the theme running through it, is a pretty simplistic metaphor, referring to how I felt so massively exposed in the media just a few weeks back. I went from living in my own little world, where record sales were steady, but unimpressive, and I was able to tour with bands like Suburban Sunrise and Infinite, to just being some sort of media circus freak...all because I had "allegedly" slept with Miss Vanity!
Back to the song though, before we delve
there. Yeah, I was happy with it. It speaks to me, and clearly other people are picking up on the emotions through my words. Also, I feel I should thank Mr Quillington whilst I'm here on TV! Yeah, Eric played guitar on this track, and from the moment I told him the fellings, emotions and the lyrics, he was just so brilliant with it. He ended up making the music a lot better than I ever could!
And now of course you have the album coming out as well next weekEeep! Exciting times. The album is really weird, if I do say so myself haha. It goes from quite light and airy at the start, to quite dark near the end, to very very insanely mentalkatie dark for one song, and then back to being very upbeat at the end. Like I said before I launched it, it's supposed to be a story, and the fact that it is so up and down lends itself to the story idea well. It's not bullshit, it is the genuine rollercoaster of Katie's emotions, and I think the truth that is in it will connect with people.
On next to the Chaos Awards....you're up for best newcomer, did you expect that?Oh totally. NO! I'm kidding. It was a lovely surprise. Obviously I've been around for a while now, but I'm still here working on a debut album, so it was nice to be picked. I don't know if I'll win because I'm up against some other awesome acts and great bands. I'll just have to wait and see. And hopefully this awards ceremony can pass without...well without so much controversy (she laughs)
Now that you mention it, is that somewhere we can go?Absolutely, I haven't done an interivew since it all came out, so go for it.
Well yeah, that was where I wanted to start. Last interview you did you were denying all lesbianism, and then you made the big reveal on twitter, how did that come about?Hmmm....ummm, well, I never wanted to keep it all so secretive. I think that's a good place to start here. I realised that I was a lesbian like, years ago, and I was never ashamed of it, but never totally out in public.
It was when I went to America with SS and Infinite at the start of the year, and I met Miss Vanity just by chance at one of the shows. What can I say, we totally hit it off from the first moment we talked, and the next thing I knew, it had escalated, into what
I thought was, well, I suppose a relationship, you know. I now know that she saw it differently, but I dunno if she was just being spiteful or what when she said that.
Anyway, she told me that we couldn't tell anyone yet. I accpeted that, and as everyone now knows, I would jet in and out of LA to see her ad spend the night.
Then when the Chaos thing came out, she just called me up....simplest call I've ever had, but so heart wrenching. All she said was "We can't talk now, maybe when it clears up. Deny everything!" So I was like, you know, "what the hell?", but I repected her decision, because I thought, naively, that someday we would be together again.
When it all came out...well, I was feeling so low, and I hadn't seen her in weeks...you know I was injured by then and everything. It was just like, so crazy, and I thought, in my mixed up little head, that if I just took the plunge maybe she would see sense too. That didn't happen though, and she totally broke my heart, right there and then, in public.
And then, of course, you had yourself, a little, "episode"?Absolutely, it was a very very dark time. I had just gone from being, I believed, in a relationship, to being totally single, in no time at all. And I saw the arrogance of the one who I loved, and the way she just brushed me off. It just messed with me so much that I lost the plot a little. I've seen the twitter rants since, and I accept that I was totally loopy yeah.
Many people have said since that your next move was even more loopy? What, you mean Nicole?
I doOn the face of it...yeah, it is insane! And looking at the story from an outside perspective, it is mental, but it's been perfect!
I mean I don't know where it came from. She was all hateful and stuff for a while, and then she started being cryptic, and then she asked me to meet her. The rest is, well, history.
What did you think when she invited you to meet up?Well I had to make her promise not to beat me up again! No, I was scared if Im honest. Very scared. But she was totally up front with me, told me the truth, and then kissed me. From there it's been a case of, "go with the flow", and it has been wow!
But she broke your arm?Yeah, she did. We haven't mentioned that weirdly! It's all in the past now.
Well, you seem happy I suppose, so who am I to judge? (she laughs)Very happy. And now I feel I can just get on with the music...and I can't wait!
