All I Want Is Everything or Nothing at All
A man was standing up on the Brooklyn Bridge
On a windy day in the city
The weatherman says with the chill effect it feels under 27 degrees
This man wore no jacket or no gloves
Just a beat up old Yankees cap, a plain white t-shirt, and some jeans
He wants to join a demographic,
Of people who's blurred minds make them leave this world too soon
You can see he's clearing toying with the idea,
As one foot he hangs over the rail.
It's a busy Friday morning, people rushing to work
Most of them are ready for the weekend
A young college student finally stops and makes the call,
To the police who show up within six minutes.
A veteran police sergeant slammed his passenger door.
He knows the manual and radios in a 10-51, Code 1
The sergeant speaks out to the jumper,
"Hey son, just talk through this with me,
You know the world ain't that bad of a place."
The man feels so free and weightless,
He takes a deep sigh and says,
"Oh you just don't see the world as I do,
Everyone has a different meaning to the vision of beauty
I don't see it in the city night skyline or the morning fog
The news at six o'clock is the worst time of the day for me.
It only compares to the death of my first dog.
I don't believe in any angels, because they've never sung a song to me,
In this world you either have it all or nothing at all."
There is an old man living in Los Angeles at an assisted-living facility,
He now has a rocking chair and has a daily four-course meal of drugs and medication.
He is suffering from Alzheimer's and his mind is drawing blanks more often than not,
If he could only remember back into his younger years,
He would know that the things in his past have led him to here.
This man was once a hometown hero in his small town
He lost his mind when his only son had died,
That day in a car accident that was no one's fault.
Tears were shed and his wife left him
Letting him know that their son was kept their love alive
So now his nurse asks him,
"Why doesn't anybody visit you these days?"
He lets out a loud laugh and says,
"Oh darlin a series of events have led me here
Funny thing is that I don't remember none of them
I'm thankful to you and the pills you bring me, they help me forget about what brought me to my knees.
I know my days are numbered and sooner rather than later, Earth will have an open space.
In this world you either have it all or nothing at all."
In Nashville, a pretty girl in her late-twenties,
She is writing invitations
To a wedding that is scheduled for the fall.
They have the church and banquet hall booked,
Her childhood minister is set to marry them.
One day, her husband-to-be asks her, "Honey baby, can I make a simple third-person observation?
You don't feel as if you're having any fun at all with this."
She chuckles and smiles at him,
She says, "Oh darling, you just worry about choosing your groomsmen and remember your suit fitting next month,
And go back to watching the football game. I promise this is making me feel happy."
If I may just make an observation, not as a friend,
But rather as a writer who sings about life,
I must tell you off the cuff, that love is so much easier than it seems
If you love somebody, then you should give yourself entirely to them if you could.
So if you ask me the meaning of love, put your headphones on and listen:
"Love is the little things in life,
The way a boy jokes, the way a girl aches,
For me, it's getting up before you, so I can make you breakfast and watch you as you wake,
So when the day comes and I want to have you for the rest of my life, that promise I make to you, is not some stupid little ring.
I want everything you carry, both the good and the bad, or nothing at all."
Oh, look around this song is everywhere,
It's the housewife taking her kids to school,
It's the doctors who prescribe the drugs, it is a full moon in December.
All these singers and these writers,
I feel all of them are right and they're wrong
It's when you try to decipher every meaning, when you should simply nod along.
It is not some secret hidden message,
Or some false hope that a man in a suit promises,
All I want is everything or nothing at all.
