Ellen: Vanity! Oh my goodness, you look incredible!
Vanity: Well you know, it's just something I thought I'd throw on.
Ellen: (laughs) I... I'm sure you did! You just looked through your completely ordinary wardrobe and threw it on, I'm sure.
Vanity: Exactly! (smiles)
Ellen: I was very, very excited for this interview, I've been waiting forever for us to meet. I hope you won't regret it, I want you on here every week.
Vanity: Me too, darling! It's been far too long, you're like... my idol. I will gladly stop by every week, we'll have to rename the show though, I want some sort of credit.
Ellen: That can be arranged! So tell me, new album coming up, I bet you couldn't wait to jump back into the studio, right?
Vanity: It was bittersweet in many ways. You're right, I couldn't wait and I was insanely excited, I had so many ideas, so it all came really naturally. But I was so nervous at the same time, scared of being branded a shadow of my former self, scared of not living up to the expectations. I just had to do this record for myself, so I just forgot about all of the pressure on me, and it really was the best way to make this album. I took my time and really experimented on it, so I'm definitely happy with the end result. I've decided to donate all of the money that I make from this album to Women's Aid, which fights to end domestic abuse against women and children. (crowd cheers)
Ellen: That's an amazing thing to do, so you deserve another round of applause for that! (crowd claps again) Now, you said your new single "Jesus" is a bit of a headache, didn't you?
Vanity: It is, I want it to be! I don't think that's a bad thing when that was what I wanted. It's a topic that has a lot of questions around, because religion and religious figures are always going to raise a whole bunch of questions, it's all very confusing, so sonically, it fits that. I definitely experimented though, the whole record is crazy experimental electro.
Ellen: You also worked with the famous Buzz & Hype on the lead single, "Beautiful Mistake". What was that like?
Vanity: They are such great, talented guys who I believe deserve all of their success. I told them exactly what I wanted, I challenged them, and they rose to the challenge, moved out of their comfort zone and made me a unique, damn good song. So I have nothing but good things to say about them, they're very focused and very professional. Those are the best types of people to work with, we're in the studio for one reason at the end of the day, and they were so focused and driven to deliver a record that would floor people. They did it!
Ellen: I can imagine, hey, do you think you could hook me up with them so they can make me a song? Maybe we can duet?
Vanity: The world would not be ready for that, really! But yes, we should definitely duet.
Ellen: I look forward to it. What about a tour? A load of people are asking me about a tour.
Vanity: It's a possibility, I'm going to have a talk with the label in a few weeks about that actually. That's a little exclusive for you there.
Ellen: Fingers crossed then! Now, to come back to such success must be overwhelming, did you ever think your time was up?
Vanity: I think we all have moments where we stop and think about stuff like that. I just know that I've got such a supportive fanbase though, they've stuck with me from the start and I'm so grateful for that, honestly. "Beautiful Mistake" did so, so well and I hope "Jesus" can follow that success, I've got big plans for this album. I want it to go on to do a lot of things, I'm just as hungry for success as I was at the start of my career. Some artists don't care about charts, I do. It's always nice to know that you're doing well and people like your songs, isn't it?
Ellen: Definitely! And obviously people do like your songs.
Vanity: Thank baby Jesus that they do! (laughs)
Ellen: Your friendship with Stephanie Fierce seems to be one of the most genuine out there. Would you agree with that?
Vanity: Of course! Steph gives me life, I love her to bits. She's gotten me through the absolute worst times in my life, I don't know how she isn't sick to death of picking up all the pieces of my problems over the years. That's a true friend, and true friends are very rare, so I'm glad to have her in my life. She's a legend, to know that both me and her are still going in this industry is crazy. Who would have thought that when we both began all those years ago that we'd still be here now? Still as mentally unhinged as ever.
Ellen: You've been in this industry for years as you said, why is it still so exciting for you as when you first stepped onto the scene?
Vanity: I think if you've got a real passion for something, it'll never get boring. Passion never dies, it's always deep inside of you, Ellen stop smiling, don't be dirty. But yes, when you think you've lost it, it'll come and rear its head again. As if to say, "Don't forget about me! You love me!", you can't ignore it. (laughs)
Ellen: I didn't say anything! (laughs) What are your plans for this year?
Vanity: Well, possibly the tour as I told you, if I do tour, that will be my year right there! Touring is my favourite thing to do in the world, so let's hope.
Ellen: I will definitely come and see a show. I'm just glad to have you on the show, back to doing what you do best. I wish you the best of luck with everything, Vanity everyone! (claps with audience)
