NADIA BERRY
Speaks out on the secret GirlSpice have been keeping & her career as a solo artist.
UserPostedImage

How does it feel right now to be Nadia Berry?
That's a funny question, it feels OK! How does it feel to be you right now, mr. interviewer?

Pretty good, thank you. So let's go through the basics, what is your typical daily routine?
Seriously? I'm so boring lately! It literally consists of lounging around, shopping and meeting up with my band for a few hours to rehearse for the tour. Honestly, some of my fans on Twitter have been like "Nadia, get your ass into promo mode and keep promoting your album!" (laughs) I'm not that bothered with how well the album continues to do, I'm just so proud of it and that's what matters most to me. It's been nice to have had a stress free promo schedule lately and to just enjoy everything for now.

I think you're one of the few people who can pull off both blonde and brunette hair, which would you say is your favourite?
Thank you. I'm a natural brunette, so it's only right for me to say that I prefer being brunette, but you know, sometimes I just get bored and like to switch it up every now and then. I'll probably be blonde again this time next month. (laughs)

What changes has becoming 30 had on you?
I guess we'll find out in a few years...

What do you mean by that?
Well... it's a long story to be fair. But in short, everyone in GirlSpice was made three years older than they originally were back when we first started for silly marketing purposes, they said we were too young to be taken seriously, blah blah blah. That was because it did take a while before GirlSpice even got a record deal, I was only 17 when the group first formed, and our management thought it would be a smart choice if we were to get a serious career and not as some novelty kid act making the cheesiest of pop songs. So I guess you could say it's our fake career ages that we've been given. Being the only original member left, the same obviously happened to the other girls who joined the group later, they were fine with it. We didn't think much of it at all back then, we were just determined to make a name for ourselves. Why have I just told you all of this? Because I'm over that, it goes against everything I believe in and there's no point in hiding it anymore. We've got the fanbase and we've most definitely made a name for ourselves, so there's no longer a need to worry about stuff like that. I don't think it's that big of a deal though! I'll probably get in trouble now. (laughs)

So why have you taken till now to reveal it?
I feel like I'm at a point in my life where I'm completely happy and feel the need to be open and honest about things. It dragged on for far too long, I don't know if anyone's bothered by it, but they don't really have a reason to be. It's funny, because you usually hear about this type of thing and they make the acts younger instead of slightly older. We were definitely all forced to grow up quickly, it's pretty fucked up when you think of it like that, talk about signing your life away!

Do you think that's maybe the root to some of your problems, including bipolar disorder? Being younger than what people thought and being thrown into the spotlight when maybe you weren't ready?
I don't have a clue, maybe I was too young and it would have been best to have gone into the industry when I was older and actually ready for everything fame has to offer? You've just gotta believe that everything happens for a reason, as cliché as that is.

You've got your headlining tour with Katie Coyle coming up, what can we expect from that?
Just a lot of great music. I think people will definitely see a different side to me on this tour because I've never had a tour of my own as a solo artist, so people will automatically assume I'm gonna be bringing the big GirlSpice style production shows, when I'm really not. It's just me and my band, no crazy choreography, no dancers, it's all pretty stripped back. It's not what I'm used to, but it's definitely how I prefer to perform. Don't get me wrong, I love everything about performing with the girls, I wouldn't change it for the world, but as someone with my own taste, that's just how I like to do things.

If you don't mind me saying, Open Heart Surgery was a pretty depressing record from you. Was that intentional?
In a way, I knew I wanted to write about things past and present that I'd suffered from. It was just a chance for me to be able to address the situations finally and move on from them. It's not all depressing though, I promise! I'd hate to one day be named as that one from GirlSpice who makes suicidal anthems. (laughs)

Of course. Is that the direction you want to go in for your next album?
I wouldn't like to say, I'm only in the process of gathering ideas and unfinished lyrics right now. I'm trying to make some sort of sense of where I want to go and I don't want it all to be a jumbled mess like some records can sometimes become. I like my albums to have a sort of feel and style to them, so you feel like you're listening to a complete package instead of little bits that have been gathered from everywhere.

What do you think are the drawbacks of being in GirlSpice?
I think the issue is that people sometimes don't take you seriously as a musician, they think that you don't deserve any sort of credibility just because you're attached to a pop group. So as a solo artist for now, it's kinda hard to break away from that, and get people to take my music seriously... I'm hoping that's slowly changing.

What do you have to say about what all the other GirlSpice members are doing right now?
I saw Chantal had started up an online blog... umm, yeah that was interesting to say the least. Sophia's music with Suzie surprised me, it's pretty catchy and I wish her luck with everything. From what I've heard from Kimberly, she has no interest in making her own music or anything.

What would you say your genre is as a solo artist?
This is why I hate genres. It's putting a label on something and putting it in a box. I've experimented a lot with my music, I've done mostly pop rock in the past, and this last record was more indie pop and alternative, but "Shadow" was more dance, "One of Those Days" was more blues, so it's hard to just label it all one thing. I still have death metal and screamo to conquer for my next album, watch this space! (laughs)

In an industry where surgery is definitely not uncommon, would you ever consider it?
I can't say I've thought about it to be honest, I definitely wouldn't rule it out, I'm not someone who's gonna call people out and say that they're terrible people for getting stuff done. If people want plastic surgery for their own benefit, then let them, if I ever felt the need, then I would do it to satisfy myself. You hear about girls getting all this surgery done to please their man and it's like ugh... seriously? Of course, sometimes I feel like I need stuff done because I have days where I feel insecure, or I feel like I'm not pretty enough, but I guess that's what every girl does really!

How confident are you with being nominated at the upcoming Chaos Awards?
I'd like to think I have a chance. I have honestly put a lot of work into the album and I hope people have noticed, so it'll definitely be exciting to see when the nominations come out. If not, I guess I'll just have to try harder next time, I'm a determined British bitch as my boyfriend would call me. That's not the reason why I make music though of course, the sales and the awards are just the icing on the cake. I won't be there anyway as I'll be in Cabo which has just made you super jealous, right? (smiles)

Just a little bit. And on that note, thank you for your time!
Thank you for listening to me babble!

Nadia Berry's Open Heart Surgery is available now.
Her new single "Risktaker" is available 26th March.

Ryan: I enjoyed reading this interview. No time was wasted on any bullshit. Miss Nadia Berry certainly spoke her mind and did not give a fuck. But, holy shit! I had to read it over about 23 times... 27 years old?! I mean, pfft... I knew that. I don't date women in their 30s with all those hormones. Now to call all my friends and celebrate the fact that I'm not dating a 30 year old. Life is good. :)

Nadia: Erica, could you really say that Sophia looks evil? I'm not commenting on the slutty bit! Ahaha.

Nadia: Douche. You're not dating a 30 year old, you're not even dating a 27 year old. You're dumped! Pfft.

Ryan: The little emo child in me really wants your next album to continue the trend you set on your last record. Although the big me, would like to see.. well yes, another emotional-filled album! And thank heavens you aren't having any dancers on tour, nothing looks worse in my eyes than cheesy dancing on stage with about 100 others following your every move.

Katie: I must have read all of this 8 or 9 times. What a wonderful insight to the closest person to me in the world. I really cannot wait to see you up on that stage on tour. Without the backing dancers, your star will only shine brighter, beautiful :)

Ooc: Outstanding as always :)

nina:love.....you ever hear that weed has a little side effect called "paranoia"? you and erich should definitely look into reading up on it.

Julia: I feel the same way you do, when you say that people don't know how to separate things when you're from a pop group. But your music is really good, and you've done so much as a soloist, I wish I'll go far like you... maybe ;)
