Meyer is better known as one of the world's most powerful super producers, but has decided to make a return to the world of releasing music, going back to his roots where soulful ballads and jazzy piano tracks littered the early career of a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist. Meyer was born to Francis and Elizabeth Meyer is Greenwich in 1982, enjoying a rather privileged upbringing, through which he was a keen learner of an array of different musical instruments. From a very early age, Meyer played recorder, before moving onto flutes and oboes throughout his schooling. It was when he was 8-years old however that Meyer would find what he would later describe as his true calling in life; the piano. From the age of 8, Meyer would be an avid learner of piano, in which he would later achieve a degree, and become well known as one of the best known young classical musicians in the country.
After leaving school, Meyer went on to study musical performance at a top university, graduating first in his class and earning many plaudits from both state-wide and country-wide recitals, at which he excelled, particularly impressing with various renditions of Bach and Beethoven pieces.During this time, he also became president of the college's operatic society, in which he was also the lead pianist, taking over the writing of the score in most of the productions the group would undertake during his time at school. Following on from his Bachelor's Degree, Josh went straight back into education (a move which he admits was partially so that he could continue his work on writing the music for the operatic group of which he had become so fond) in order to study towards a Master's Degree in Musical Theory and Sound Production, which would later land him a quite lucrative career. Throughout his time at university, as well as mastering his piano and writing skills, Josh Meyer would also become proficient in trumpet, tuba, flute, guitar and minor percussion instruments.
Having left school, Josh Meyer would leave home in 2002, at the tender age of just 20, taking himself to an apartment in New York City, from where he planned to release his debut album, a movewhich he believed would see him catapult into stardom. Despite being a very modest person in general life, Meyer always had one thing to be confident over, and that was his ability to create top class high-brow music. And so it was that after three months of tireless work in a studio he had built of his own accord in his front room, Josh Meyer released his debut album Wandering in the Mist in August of 2002. It was a swirling, strange sort of mix of different kinds of music, ranging from deeply neo-classical piano pieces with no lyrics, to odd sort of jumbled jazz tracks. It would later be described as "a confused effort" by the NME, while Rolling Stone said: "There is no doubt that this guy has talent, but it's a waste of your talent to spread yourself out so widely." In the end, with album sales reflecting the less than favourable reviews, Josh Meyer's fledgling music career was finished before it had even begun.
From there on in, Meyer would concentrate his efforts on becoming a producer to some of the top stars in the industry. Apparently feeling burned by his only attempt at reaching the top, he would tell most of the people that he would work with that he was a "silent partner", refusing to be credited in the album sleeves for many of the records he worked on. This continued until he was convinced, while working with ambient-pop icon Katie Coyle in February and March of 2012, to give his own music career another shot, one decade after the industry first burnt his fingers.
In 2012, Meyer has announced that he will be releasing a comeback single, before he later moves on to working on a more well rounded and focused follow up to his less than successful debut album.DiscographyAlbumsWandering in the Mist (2002) TBC (2012)SinglesNone |
