And we now have Nadia Berry on the phone... Nadia!
Hello!

Hello to you too! Where are you right now?
I'm in China, I'm laying on my bed in the tour bus.

Is it comfy?
You know, it does the job. (laughs) I'll tell you one thing though that I hate about being on tour, you end up missing your bed so much.

I would probably have to say the same if I was in your position, you can't beat your own bed, can you?
Exactly.

You and Katie recently said on Twitter that you preferred Japan to China, why is that?
I think Japan is a lot more interesting, you see so many things, and everything's so tiny. It's adorable. They just all have their own sense of identity and style, it's so different to the rest of the world, and I really love that. I miss it a lot, I'd definitely like to go back. China is great though, well, at least the food is!

What would you say apart from being without your bed is the hardest thing about being on tour?
Just being away from Ryan, being away from the ordinary. You know what I mean? I like an ordinary day, I'm quite boring to be honest. I'm perfectly happy staying at home and watching movies all day, or doing a bit of shopping and then going home and doing some cooking or something. I can be wild when I need to be and when I feel like it, but I'm just a normal person. I don't have this hectic rockstar lifestyle or anything! (laughs) Touring is such a weird thing, we're human beings... we're not designed to live on a tour bus constantly, but you get sucked into that world in this career, it's most definitely an experience, a tiring one at that.

You said on Twitter that you didn't want to tour for a while after this one, why is that?
It's so emotionally draining, I practically felt dead after the first few weeks of this tour! I cry a lot alone in my room, just because I actually feel really lonely at times! (laughs) That sounds silly, but I do get homesick a lot, and I do get very tired. Of course, I love it and I love performing for the fans, but I think we all need a break from it every now and then.

Aww! That's a bit upsetting to think of you crying in your room, all alone.
I know, I'm sorry listeners, I'm not trying to depress you all on purpose or anything. I'm not depressed on the road or anything, I promise. It can just get really emotional, as if your emotions are amplified when you're on tour, because you don't have those usual comforts around to keep you together.

Your new single "Records On" is out now, tell us a little bit about it, and what inspired you to write it?
"Records On" really is a quite chilled, mellow song that I wrote on a rainy day, I just felt very peaceful, I had my favourite music playing in the background, and the song just came naturally like that. Music can do a lot to people, and that's what the song really is about, a declaration of love to your partner, and also music. I'm really happy at the response towards it though, the feeling of people enjoying your music never gets old.

And I heard you've got a little exclusive for us, right?
I do indeed! My fifth solo studio album Hera will be dropping 11th June.

That's a fairly unique album title!
I wanted something a little left-field, so I'm glad to hear that response from you! It's not exactly a concept record, but it's more of a state of mind that I'm going through right now. Hera is a Greek goddess, who is actually the goddess of marriage, women and birth. I'm hoping the title doesn't scare my other half! (laughs) I see Hera as the ultimate, complete woman, and I guess that's what the album in general is about. It's not all slotted into this same concept, but overall it's about different experiences and troubles I have in becoming the ideal woman that I want to be. And becoming that whilst learning from both the good and bad times.

You sound like you've thought it through quite a bit.
It just caught my attention really. Greek mythology has always interested me, so once I read about Hera and did a little bit of research, I was like, "Yes! I love this woman!"

What direction are you going in for this album?
It's funny, because I actually picked up a lot of fans from the whole indie crowd with the last album. I had grown men coming up to me and telling me what a surprise Open Heart Surgery was and how much they enjoyed it, that was lovely. It was more alternative and soft rock, and since then I've been trying to find where I want to go. It made me laugh, someone the other day said that I was becoming too indie for the pop crowd, but yet I was still too pop for the indie crowd to fully embrace me! (laughs) I wouldn't really call myself indie at all though, how dare a GirlSpice chick try to get accepted by the indie community! I just go with whatever I'm feeling at that time, which is why it's hard to really identify my fanbase. This new album is a lot more upbeat and cheerful, it's indie, pop and electro all in a blender.

Your last album was a little depressing to say the least, which you admitted yourself. What made this new album more cheerful?
I was writing a lot of songs on these amazing, relaxing holidays, how could I ever feel depressed? I know there's a lot of people who enjoy my more emotional, sadder stuff though, and there is definitely that on the second half of the album. Most of those songs were written while I've been on tour, just because I've felt a lot more vulnerable and it's made for some great writing.

It seems like you're so focused on your solo music lately, will we ever see you back in GirlSpice?
I wouldn't wanna force that upon myself if I wasn't feeling it. I'm enjoying being my own person right now, and being asked that question gets a little bit of a bore to keep answering! Which isn't your fault, a lot of people want a new GirlSpice album, the last one was certified Diamond, there's certainly demand there. Such a thing shouldn't be rushed though, we made the last album when we all felt like it and when we were in the mood, and the same will happen for whenever we decide to make another record.

If I'm honest, your solo stuff is better, so take your time!
Yay! (laughs) Thank goodness.

You're such a global phenomenon who really hit it big with GirlSpice, and your solo stuff has done great as well. Does it feel like you're representing your country in a way?
I guess so! It's quite nice when you put it like that, British acts are doing amazing things lately and are really reaching a whole other level in terms of popularity. I would like to think my country is proud of me for doing big things around the world, that's quite a nice thought! I'm slowly being turned into an American though... have you heard this complete mess of an accent? (laughs)

Come and live back here then!
I can't, I'm afraid. I'd never see my boyfriend then, he's too in love with his own country! Which he has every right to, I'm a little bit obsessed with everything American... aww, I miss it already. I do miss London too, of course. But it's one or the other, and I've lived in London for all of my life, it's nice to have a change.

With the news of your mother, I'm sorry to hear about that by the way, I bet it's quite tempting to just fly back to the UK and stay over there for a while, right?
Thank you, it's fine. I didn't take it very well at first, a lot of tears, a lot of worrying, of course. I was fine once I got it all out of my system though, the cancer was caught early, and her treatment has already started, it's going really well from what I hear. I could cry all day about it, it won't change anything and it won't get rid of it, so it's important for me to stay strong on the road. That's what she said to me, stay strong, carry on doing my thing, and that she'll be okay. All good!

Well, we here at Radio 1 wish her, as well as you all the best. Thank you very much for talking to us and good luck with the album.
A pleasure as always, thank you!

Natalya: My advice for you Nadia is to stay solo...Lashes are here to totally outshine anything GirlSpice ever recorded!

Gemma: Nat! Be nice for God's sake! Hi Nadia, we all love you in Lashes, and we aspire to be even in the same sort of world as GirlSpice some day far off. Last week, someone compared us to you guys, and I swear I was dead for at least a minute! I love your work, and this was such a sweet little interview. Love it, love you, love it all.

Katie: Jeeeeez Nad, tell a girl when you're going to be doing an interview. I almost came in to ask you if you wanted a cup of coffee, and you're lying there talking to the entire world! Hehe. That would have been weird. I can't help but think our Twitter slip about China is starting to get out there now though! Shit...haha. Can we retract it? Or say we got hacked! Yeah...yeah...people always believe that!

Ryan: Are you serious?! Didn't you release an album like five months? I'm gonna have to kidnap you and lock you up in our Montana home, you need to learn to relax! Okay, no, getting serious now. You're album title scares me, quite a bit. If the album is about what Hera stood for, and you wanting to become her... I'm moving to fucking Alaska. I am a bit disappointed to hear that the album isn't depressing, I know that sounds twisted, but I look forward to the new album. I'm almost tempted to push back the release of my album two weeks to go against you. Don't worry, I won't do that. I don't want to embarrass my girlfriend. ;)

Ryan: Nadia Berry.. we love you! Seriously. Who says we're too old for crushes? Anyway, we're super stoked to hear your follow up album. Open Heart Surgery was a real inspiration for us so we can't wait for Hera to drop. I'm pretty jealous you guys are touring Asia right now, we're still yet to get out of the US! We're also deeply sorry to hear of your mothers poor health, we wish her a quick recovery.

Nadia: I will stay solo just because you say so, Natalya. I'm going to say that much and be nice... good luck I guess. Thank you very much, Gemma! Best of luck with Lashes. :) Oops yeah, that was a bit awkward Katie, ahaha! We love China, we promise! :(

Naomi: I'm really seeing a growth from the music on the last album to "Records On". So looking forward to this album in June, I've been inspired from the last one.
