If we read Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James I'd use my own hands to tear my eyes from their moorings. From the excerpts I have read, it is a trashy, veeeeerrrrry badly written, fan fiction that somehow got accidentally published. Genuinely, that is not literature. It's garbage, and its demographic really outlines that well.

This shows all you need to know about that crap. http://fiftyshadesofedits.tumblr.com/

might i suggest an altenative stater book for th ebook club?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/...-Bo-Fowler/dp/009927468X

Scepticism Inc might be harder for the Americans to get, but if you can its a cheep, crackin read that deals with life, the universe and religion from the viewpoint of a shopping trolley.

or maybe the lies of locke lamora instead....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/...1361740&sr=1-1-spell

just suggestions....

I read Scepticism Inc. On your own recommendation I believe Rince. Fantastically weird book. But a truly brilliant read.

Well if we're suggesting books to start-off, I've got three.

Since it might be hard to get Skepticism Inc in the US, I think a really good equivalent (with the same bizarre type of characters) would be Naked Lunch:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/...id=1341370027&sr=1-2

Next, I'm a big comic book fan and these 2 would really be well-off because they both strike me as magnificent:
Maus:

Essex County:
